anyone else have a bit of a heart attack at 6;40 when alicia did her timer?that was extremely dangerous how much power she had in that! if she didn't get her hands down once she was on the floor in the front handspring, she would have easily snapped her neck!
@afgymnast96 i was at olympic trials in 2008 and have a picture of alicia doing her vault warm-up on night one that is CRAZY! she's sooooooo high above everyone, all the coaches on the podium waiting to change things for their gymnast are all looking at her. it's just a simple handspring, but the way she flew was unbelievable. it's one of my favorite pictures (out of over 900) even though it's really simple because you just don't see people do that.
@afgymnast96 none of my trials pictures are online - i literally took about 900. practically watched trials on the little screen of my camera. :-P but if you private message me on here, i'll give you my REAL email address and can send you this particular picture i was referring to, as well as a few others if you tell me who you like & what your favorite event is. i was at both nights for the women & the second for the men.
cassy vericel has great tumble but, like shawn johnson, 0 choreography or elegance! i'm not sure it was a smart move to have her perform after the always elegant and graceful isabelle severino.
ASac did win on floor in Melbourne and Nastia was in second. Cheng Fei didn't even qualify to floor event finals at that championship. She came back to win floor in Aarhus and she won vault at every worlds from 2005-07
Team finals are not held every year (2005 there was no team final, only individual and apparatus final). The 2009 World championship will follow the same as the 2005 championship. Individual all around title and apparatus only.
In 2005, countries for the Men's competition were allowed to send 6 athletes, coutries for the Women's competition were allowed to send 4. 2009 will probably be the same format since there is no team competition.
I don' t know that there has *never* been a team final the year after the olympics. There won't be one in 2009. I think it is because a lot of the top Gymnast retire after an olympic games and teams need time to groom the new talent.
Yeah, I forgot about that. Mohini Bhardwaj was on that team. US won the Bronze in the Team Competition. There was also a team competition in 1997. I am not sure about the other years.
I love Severino's floor routine! She's always been a favorite of mine, she's so graceful. It's really sad that she got injured. I wanted to see her in Beijing.
yep absolutely! she has a lot of experience and it shows! i think she's a very pretty gymnast, i like her style. shame she sustained a carrer injury just months before beijing!
Thank you so so much for posting this video, i'm a huge fan of Shawn Johnson after sein her performance on Beijing 2008, the girl is a "tough cookie", amazing...!!!
This coverage doesn't compare to NBC's but it's not all Bart and Tasha's fault. What NBC does is finely tune the sound balance between commentators, the sound effects from the actual gymnastics, and the crowd noise. They amp up the low-end white noise from the crowd and you would not believe how much of a difference that makes. Plus, NBC has Al Trautwig as the meta-announcer to give Tim and Elfi both structure and rest time. And don't forget fluff pieces -- those break up the broadcast as well.
i like this coverage better, they actually show other gymnasts, on nbc they just show the top 2 americans. plus bart and tasha actually know what they're talking about
wtf? after the 2nd romanian girl finished her routine, tasha said the romanians had a good start on bars - ummm, except the first romanian girl fell. And later Bart said that the first romanian girl had a bobble on her dismount - am i the only person that actually noticed that she fell on her dismount?
Yeah, even Shawn isn't bad. But at the trials, they kept saying they needed another barworker.. which is ironic when in 2000 and 2004 US was exceptional there. I guess weak isn't a good word, because they are very strong still.
i get so mad wen bart and tasha say the chinese womens bars are so perfect and he cant find any deductions. yes they have good form and hit handstands but lines r not everything. wen transitoning form low 2 high bar they come in way to close to the bar at a dead drop and have to push out their bellies then bend thier arms to get 2 handstand.
to some extent, i agree, but i'd MUCH rather have this than NBC's Tim & Elfie. They are so negative & critical, whereas here, you get something other than basically "she sucks worst than the girl that sucked before her and "that tiny step is horrible why couldn't see hang on for a stick?" granted, those mistakes matter, but they ignore all the things they do correctly. this may not be great, but it's better than NBC.
You can't blame them too much. When there are delays in scores, and anything of that matter, it is their job to find a way to fill that space. That can't be too easy. I think Bart and Tasha do a pretty decent job.
Tim and Elfie are who I grew up on as commentators and I definitely prefer them. When they comment on performance I don't think they're overly critical or negative, I think they just relay the importance of the events and what happens to these gymnasts. Tim and Elfie make the sport of gymnastics more appealing for the average person because it becomes a passionate presentation of how important these competitions are and how intense the sport of gymnastics is, rather than a fluffy showcase.
I grew up on Tim and Elfie and didn't know that their style caused such strife until I read the comments about them here and watch the Beijing Games with friends. My friends immediately commented on Elfi's comment. I believe a Romanian gymnast had just performed to which Elfi replied: "Beatable."
It caused quite an uproar but it didn't bother me because I thought Elfi was just being honest.
BBc has great coverage, more gymnasts, but they lack the fluff pieces and drama.
At last, I am not alone. BBC is fantastic but kind of dry. I love the fluff that NBC produces it really sets the tone and creates drama, taking gymnastics beyond just a competition and beyond just a sport.
It's not necessarily that Elfi says those things about other countries, but it's the fact that she overlooks EVERYTHING for the Americans yet extrapolates the tiniest flaws of gymnasts from other countries.
He is far better than Tim Daggett and Elfi. I don't mind the fact that he thinks before he speaks. Tim says the same thing over and over. Since 1998 he has made "like a kid on a playground" remark about bar workers.
yah it was. i watched it on tv. it wasnt live but they showed it. i taped it to. people have vids of individual athletes but the the whole team competition. they aired hte AA finals also.
sorry i cant find it. but i know i saw it, go to nastia's website and you'll see it. its obvious its from nbc you can tell by the video quality. UB team final is what it was.
she has to because her fellow commentator is married to the most famous romanian! and if she says anything bad i bet bart will get mad, because he practically thinks he's romanian him self lmao
