The ending always seem'd abrupt to me...errrr..thats the end??? seems like it need another cycle of words and tunes...but like most psychedelic jams it could have gone on for ever,,, guess you have to put it to bed some time.
This is not just an unparalleled album by rock music, but one of the greatest works of art created by human beings in our entire history as a species with language and tool usage. It touches on eternal truths and universal experiences, and "Eclipse" in particular still makes my nipples hard more than 22 years after I first heard it.
listening to the whole album is something pretty special, has to be one of the best albums of the past 40 or 50 years idf you ask me :) does really take you to a place, thats what sucks about modern music, it's meaningless shit, whats it about exactly NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!! tgggggggggggggggggrrrrr :P
I have the SACD of "The Dark Side of the Moon 30th Anniversary Edition". At the end of Eclipse, we can listen (with high volume) some violins. Have you ever listened that? What sound is this? Where is it from?
@SPYR017 Some people say its an orchestrated version of the Beatles song "She's got a ticket to ride" It probably used to be on the tape then got poorly erased so you can still hear it faintly with your volume at full blast.
I love how most of the songs on this album like morphs into each other and make it seem like only 2 songs (when fliping sides of the album). I love pink floyd.
The whole album just about life in general. The last lyrics are that everything this song lists and everything under the sun is in tune, BUT the sun is eclipsed by the moon (so everything is out of tune and corrupt, etc. time and money)
I think I just listened to the greatest music ever! I must thank you for uploading this. I had been looking to listen to Pink Floyd for awhile. It was so convenient of you putting it up here. Thanks for the upload!
i really like your interpretation. i believe that anyone can percieve a piece of music differently...and find a way to make it mean what they want it to....but i really like your interpretation, because if you do listen to the album...it makes a lot of sense...although, i have heard roger say its about going insane....i still like it.
I simply think that this is just the final stage of life, right before death, while you recollect your past and look upon what you have done, while Great Gig in The Sky is about simply the thought of an afterlife and the feelings on death.
In the end when he says "But the sun is eclipsed by the moon", it could possibly mean that after experiencing life, he can say that earth, or life on earth, is not "in-tune", and is in fact doing very badly.
The final comment, "There is no dark side of the moon really, as a matter of fact it's all dark" also points to the same reasoning of a feeling of hopelessness for the world, and that there aren't good and bad people, everyone, or at least most people are bad and there is no hope for humanity.
This is simply all speculation and opinion. Your idea sounds like it could work too.
@motrinman18 means different things to everyone. Like ask 3 different people who have seen The Wall what they thought it meant. You get 3 totally different answers. Thats the beauty of this music. How it effects each individual is what makes it so special and lasting. Thanks for posting the album up thydanny!~
@glethal85 This is the most interesting interpretation I've heard in a while. Been enjoying this album for years, and never thought about a/b sides. We really lost something when vinyl died-- in more ways than I realized.
@glethal85 Very retarded interpretation, no matter how many people seem to think it is great. The two sides have nothing to do with a good life or bad life. You can see this because of the criticism of the person being spoken of in "Breathe" (All you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be..) Also, "Time" is about a wasted life, rather than a good one, and "Brain Damage" is about insanity, not a bad person. Also, "Us and Them" has nothing to do with a bad person's life.
@glethal85 Interesting interpretation. From my perspective, I never saw heaven or hell factor into it at all. The whole album is about death. How we are all doomed to that fate, and the many ways we reach that end.
@glethal85 he is only tapping into the rest of it so to speak there is no heaven or hell only ascension I'm only 26 and I understand a lot of music maybe I'm crazy maybe I aint good interpretation until you hit a moment in life when you realize so much more
@glethal85 Oh....so that explains the part about the lunatic and meeting on the "Dark Side of the Moon" in Brain Damage. The dark side is hell, right?
@glethal85 I know you posted this like a year ago but its very interesting. I don't quite agree with your interpretation, but I've only started to think about the meaning of this album in detail just recently, so any idea to me is really cool
@glethal85 i think there's something different to it
I wouldn't say you miss the point of it, because interpretations of an art piece are always relative and subjective, but...to me, this song seems to simply sum up the whole meaning of the album, as it says in "Breathe": "all you touch and all you see, is all your life will ever be".
Though, I tell you I had this same feeling about Great Gig in the Sky, but somehow i felt it didn't make sure if the place you went was heaven or hell.
@glethal85 I think it means that humanity is more linked than we realize; we share a ton of experiences, whether we know it or not, including that final experience of death. Hence, "Everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.
I think the sun represents free will, so when everything is "under the sun" life goes smoothly and you can funcion properly, but when the moon blocks out the sun it means that you don't control your own life anymore. The moon probably represents drugs that block out your thoughts and messes up your brain.
I find your interpretation interesting. While the band's stated reference of the song to insanity may well be true, the entire album features rich symbolism reminiscent of ancient spiritual beliefs that actually precede Christianity.
The place-setting among the Heavens, the references to light and to darkness. These elements are all symbolic of the ancient concept of the struggle of Good vs. Evil. Much of the spiritual nature of the album is expressed without words, by using sound alone to create specific moods that are ineffable.
Trust me, watching a friend lose grasp of reality will press one into consideration of one's own mortality. In addition, these events often involve a religious experience of some sort as a part of the disease process. That was the case with my friend. He became obsessed with the Bible just prior to his descent into schizophrenia and he has never recovered.
The lyrics for Eclipse do appear to be an allegory of Judgment Day. All of your life is being weighed in the balance. Regardless of the religious beliefs of the authors, there is no doubt that they have lived in a culture saturated with Abrahamic religious traditions, with Christianity quite likely having been the predominant faith tradition in their culture. I’m not surprised to see Christian themes expressed in their work.
You do have a point; however, I must disagree. Pink Floyd wrote "Great Gig in the Sky" to resemble the point in life where one questions their faith and belief in whichever god or higher entity they believe in. I don't think they would have included that particular song if the album was entirely based on Christianity. I think that Pink Floyd took a more dark approach and are stressing that everything you do doesn't matter - we all die in the end. Religion's got nothing to do with it
@glethal85 hey man, your interpretation is on religion, some people's are on the mind, or insanity, mine is about life in general. I think Time is literally about not wasting time, and I think Eclipse means death.
Did Roger, Richard, Nick , and David did those do acid, weed, etc when producing the album. Just wondering. They've never publicly said they've done drugs, but they done it.
Oh young'in it's a prism. A prism takes in a beam of light ant refracts it. Literally bends that light. That is the album cover. A beam of light that, once through a prism reveals a rainbow of colors that weren't seen or noticed before, get it? We are all a beam of light waiting for OUR prism to reveal all the magic in us. This song isn't about losing your mind. It's about dying and going to hell...
Kinda like Great Gig in the Sky is about dying and going to heaven.
Side A is about a good persons life (Light Side), Side B is about a sinner's life (Dark Side)
If the moon is eclipsed, then there is no light during your ascension to heaven.. get it? So you're actually on your way to hell...
"...But the sun is eclipsed by the moon"
Comments and hatemail on my interpretation is welcome.
