They gave up on something, some idea or something they thought was good at one time and now they call it naive, irrational or dangerous, whatever. In their core there's a hole, something lost. It makes them twist their arguments to fit their view of the world, now way too negatively emotionally charged. It makes them spiteful, vengeful mocking, basically everything Hitchens is. It's a shame. He's really smart.

@AlwaysReason I am not sure I can agree with you that Christopher Hitchens is smart. He is brilliant, and engaging, and funny-- the qualities more of a cynosure than of a cynic. Even his political enemies (many of whom include former comrades on the Left) attest to his charm and intelligece. Maybe you have seen a side of him that others (including me) have not, but you must have a greater insight into him than even Hitchens' ex-friends. Maybe you do, but I have yet to see evidence of that.
