This is quite a series and very interesting. It is a shame that Amish bishops have (nearly all, if not all) forbidden the Gospel of grace in order to preserve their lifestyle. The singing reminds me of Appalachian shape-note singing.
My gosh these people are amazing. I am awestruck by their purity, their work ethic and how extraordinarily loving they are. Such a beautiful family especially the children. The little girl marie is just angelic. I was heartbroken when they said she was sick with leukemia but please God she is making a full recovery. I wish I could get an update on how she is doing. Those two men are not only extraordinary human beings, but true Christians. God bless you all.
All I can think about is that their little girl is seriously ill, the mother is pregnant with her fifth child and they have given away all of their money. They're about to learn a hard lesson regarding Christianity - that the world is full of praying believers who are hungry, homeless, with no health care who can quote the scriptures word for word. I think they better hop back on the buggie, tell their elders they're sorry and keep their mouths shut!
I respect this family and their lifestyle very much as well although I don't share their beliefs. The irrationality of religion comes out when they cannot rationalize why bad things happen to good people. If she gets better, they will give credit to god instead of treatment, and if she doesn't, they would have to admit god wanted their daughter to die.
@Faustaao Well, the thing is they both accepted her surviving as her dying. Of course the treatment is playing a big part of her possible healing, but why not let them give credit to some higher power for letting their daughter stay with them? I believe in reincarnation and that everyone returns to earth with a purpose, except if you're a new soul. If your body cannot support that destiny or meaning however, then you should indeed return to the other side and await another chance.
I see what you are saying. However, the treatment of the cancer is a gift from the Divine. They are thanking the Giver rather than the gift. Let's hope she recovers. The Lord is bringing us ALL to community, unity and relationship in the end.

Our family is not Amish, LOVE their company when I have the pleasure of it and did my best to use Ephraim's analysis about one of our twin daughters who did die from a brain tumour. Despite responding well to treatment and the multitudes of prayers said globally for our daughter she did go to be with Jesus one day after our twins turned 5 years old. We are grateful that we got to spend that last year of treatment with her without her looking sick all the time, that was a blessing!! xo
This series was excellent. It's a great story that needed to be told. I knew the young adults have a struggle with being baptized to join the church. I was unaware that not following the smallest rule could get one excommunicated from the church. This little over a year old is there an update on Marie.
Compassionate free enterprise works best. Obamacare was a rotten idea. In the USA , we already had a quasi-socialized medicine. People making less than about $30,000 a year are usually covered by Medicaid. I had 6 children. All my children were covered by government insurance- which paid for everything. The courts have let the Amish opt out of Social Security. The worst oppression we have is against alternative medicine( IE laetrile). Our government is in bed with the drug companies.
It all seems so ideal, innocent and pure until a serious issue comes up and their belief system is tested. In a later episode you will find out that Efram decides to not treat his daughter expecting that God will cure her. The courts stepped in and ordered that the daughter be treated. In this case sadly, the government showed more love for his child than he did!
@mrekbass I can see Ephraim's great faith and Love for the Lord. To say that the government showed more love than him is crazy. Maybe you disagree with his way of thinking, but I think he understands the providence of God, and the Lord's love for his little one far better than most. If his daughter were to die, I know he would miss her terribly (maybe more than the government), but he truly knows the Lord will take better care of her better than he ever could.
@mrekbass First off, I admire Ephram greatly. How does God look upon his decision? I think He will look upon Ephram with great favor. Unless you understand the love of God, I don't think you can possibly understand the decision they made. God loves that little girl more than Ephram ever could, and even though Ephram would miss her terribly he can be 100% sure she is with the Lord. The world fears death because they fear what comes next. Ephram has great faith and doesn't fear it
@jla7blue I would say that if death will occur without the medication this meets your requirement of being "useful."
Additionally, believing that medication should not be used, as Efram did, believing that god would cure his daughter and believing that upon death she will be in gods loving arms are two different things entirely. He stated that he trusted god to cure her, not that she might be better off in heaven presently. This is a very important distinction!
@mrekbass In your first response to me you asked about how my god looks upon that, as if to say mine is different than yours. Then in your last post you call me brother. Have you accepted Jesus as your Savior. If not, I think I can see where you're coming from. This stuff has always been debated even in the church, but if you're not a person of faith you absolutely cannot understand where Ephram is comming from. You can see in the videos how he loves his children. I'd say very very much.
@mrekbass Why is that an important distinction? Believe it or not, if the Lord decides to take his little girl, I am absolutely sure Ephram would miss her so very much, but unlike the unbeliever who loses a child, he knows she is in a much better place. The alternative is God really does cure her and Ephram and His family continue to enjoy her. Ephram is a wise man; a man of great faith. I am sure he thoroughly thought all these things over. May the Lord bless you. Jim
@jla7blue If you cant see the distinction it's pure evidence of your inability to think deeply and clearly. I didn’t even finish reading what you wrote! You are a troll that wants to argue with people. On the other hand I live my life at peace with others and at peace with my relationship with God! Please go and provoke an argument with someone else!
@jla7blue Do you assume there is no God? I have heard of many instances where He has chosen to heal people. A lot of doctors also believe that the medications that are used to treat cancer are not only poison to the cancer, but also to the body, and then there's no guarentee. Perhaps he's sparing his little one from all that pain. We don't know what went into his decision. Hopefully someday you will understand what faith is. hopefully before its to late. Jesus loves you.
@Ilovenausicaa I'm Dutch and I just can't imagine a country that would allow a child to die if her parents could not afford to pay for her treatment. Here we all have healthcare, it's absolutely required. But because everyone has it, cost has been quite low. It's been steeply on the rise the past two decades though, and there is upheaval about the introduction of the free market in healthcare and the recent budget cuts. But even now it's MUCH cheaper and better than it is in the US.
@Annique Same in New Zealand :) 'Socialised medicine' as the Americans love to call it is actually a good thing and ensures free and equal care for all.
@Annique We have a law that no hospital can turn someone away in an emergency,so in effect we all have emergency care in the U.S, whether or not we can pay. It is definitely a touchy subject though, about religious freedom and parents rights! But there are no kids dying from lack of healthcare in America, that's an election year myth!
there is a wrong translation in their rules and that's not a joke. the rule means wearing a full beard and not a moustache. and not wearing a beard without a moustache.
Damn it began all so hopeful and happy with him being smart and using technology, but then came the crazy preaching and giving up all their savings, wasn't he going to store the money in the bank? And then out of nowhere cancer.
@oooooo386 Amen friend. I pray that you will continue to grow in the Grace and knowlege of the Lord, and He will give you the faith He gave Ephram. Seek Him with all your heart and you will be truly blessed.
Thanks Ephram for your great example of what faith is.
@oooooo386 If you become a christian because of this video, then you def. didn't see the lunacy involved in the shackles of the church and the blindness to the simple and ultimate fact it showed: You are a product of your environment.
@wealthmaker247 in my experience, living in close proximity to several amish communities in the northern indiana area, that is not true: the sins of the father do not affect the children, in Amish theology. Things might be different in Lancaster, though.
bobbypatz There's the problem- a faulty view of God. God doesn't give cancer He is the healer. Cancer is a result of sin that came in the world through Adam.
A good example of logical fallacy and circular reasoning.
There was no such thing as “Adam”, buy a scientific book or visit a library for fucks sake.
And cancer is a mutagenic disease of the eukaryotic cell. Not the by-product of some imaginary crime.
The fact that she has cancer is no one’s responsibility, especially not the responsibility of a fictional character or an imaginary invisible sky daddy.
I wish we could cure religious insanity and ignorance.
This is such a beautiful family. So loving. Never seen such lucky childs, I thinks. Even their kid is very ill, they are spending all their power in giving their lovely daughter the faith she needs for such a therapy. God may bless them! <3
This video really made cry from joy. Ive never seen such a happy family ever in my life, showed up in TV. Of course they have very strict rules... but what it shows is that all those rules keep that people as its best. They are good people, generous, helpful, pretty, healthy and HAPPY. I dont believe in god cause i was raised in the catholic church in a disturb age... but god bless them and i wish some other people learn from this people. <3
@bobbypatz Well I would say we all grow on cancers and problems. How simple would be the personality without negative perspectives in Life? Its hard for us to see the good things in bad situations. But everybody has to go through such times, and we all have to learn out of this. For sure, this is really sad! But life is hard and if people believe in god the most think there is the bad opposite, too. Anyway, you dont have to believe in god but I do! And you should accept that everyone has his own
@bobbypatz as i said, i dont believe in god, but in their culture, help them to be together and to be full of joy, so i bless that god, and i bless that family cause it shows what normal society have not: good and happy people!
@bobbypatz as i said, i dont believe in god, but in their culture, help them to be together and to be full of joy, so i bless that god, and i bless that family cause it shows what normal society have not: good and happy people!
remulak: Ephraim never said he didn't believe in modern meds. He is still praying for healing. I think your attitude gets people nowhere. It's an empty "faith" in nothing.
It is so sad that religion is still at its old job today, and that is persecuting the God-loving-righteous. Jesus said that the pharisees in His day esteemed the rules and regulations of men above the commandments of God. And that is just what these amish elders have did to this couple and others. Would Jesus excommunicate anyone for preaching and teaching in his name? Just think of all the martyrs who died under roman catholicism, because they went against un-scriptural church teachings.
This was a wonderful series. And it's also wonderful that he and his wife have put their faith in Jesus to do for them what He feels is best. How nice that the community didn't completely shun them and are giving them emotional and financial support.
@STONEISLAND38 all i got fr this comment is that you're a muslim. So u follow 'allah' the sheep herder god who commands it so to cut ppls necks & decapitate their heads & stone women till their heads cave in & their brains spill out & commands all this barbaric acts through a pedophile 'prophet' named mooohhamed who married a 6 yr old child & consummated with her at the age of 9. Islam is the sickest & most barbaric religion of today. It's a terrorist cult. Islam is a danger to humanity.
@mytv80 The whole lesson I'm getting out of these videos is that it isn't right to shun people for having different beliefs.. Just live and let live we're not different...and those things we use to make ourselves right and everyone else wrong (dogma) are artificial and die with the body. If we focus on difference than we are adding to illusion by furthering seperation.
@nicholasrehl the lesson i got is that different religious beliefs are a lot alike in that they feed off of each others delusions. they are all blatantly nonsensical, some being more extreme than the other. live & let live would be fine in a world of lucky charms and bubblicious bubble gum. but we live in a real world where evidently, ppl are hearing their 'god's' voice telling them to kill each other! religion focuses on the differences, furthering separation, adding illusion to the delusion.
You have myopic vision mytv80. All you can see and experience is through your 5 senses. If you do not repent, this world which you love is the closest you will ever get to Heaven.
For them, this world is the closest they will ever get to hell.
@teel6060 it's better 2have myopic vision than being blind like u. Next time u mention my name, direct ur reply at me bcoz I hear fr braindead believers such as urself, that ur 'god' doesn't like cowards 2much. *gasp* Oh no! If I don't 'repent' I won't go to 'heaven'? Isn't that the place where we can have ice cream everyday? But if I don't get to heaven, how will I ever see my dead grandma? *more gasp* So 'hell' for me? Is that the place where every1 eats roasted marshmallows while tanning?
Indoctrination = Insanity. From being amish to christianity. Great! Sell your farm for a million then give your money away so you can't buy a house of your own and pay medical bills for your daughter who has leukemia. Excellent! Convince yourself that if god cures your daughter's illness you would be thankful also if god decides to kill her, you would also be thankful. Awesome! The ridiculousness and sadness of religion is so apparent..but apparently not.
its always something with the religious. Here the church says well we will halp you but there's a catch. That is typical christian retoric.always trying to control others.Even though jesus himself said suffer the children to come unto me.No 1 in the christian hyarchy,no matter what denomination will do something for another without a catch attached to it
"take her home with glory" here's the purpose of religion in a nutshell, meaning keeping sanity and not becoming a "wreck" when your loved one is about to die and rot away..
@FantastyckplastycK I don't have a religion and I didn't become a wreck when this happened to me and my family. I understand what you're saying; however, to condone religion with all of its other degrading and damaging baggage, simply because it is a good crutch in times of distress, is distasteful to put it bluntly.
@MilitantScience in no way whatsoever am i condoning the regligion! what i was saying is that, religion is an illusion for those who can NOT see eye to eye with the reality.. in other words, for those indoctrinated, supersticious, uneducated and all in all not very bright .. and there is a pretty sound theory that the origin of THE religion connects to the death the close one..
@shiznitz345 You obviously know nothing of the Christian religion otherwise you wouldn't make such a stupid remark. Why don't you educate yourself before commenting.
0:42.....this Lukemia is a disaster for any American! you got no medicare like in Canada! this poor Amish family will have sell everything to pay those greedy golfing doctors who forgot that a real doctor is in it to save life!! not buy new damned golf clubs with money he squeezed from poor folk!!
@qwer4o They're not cunts, they're simply brain washed victims! I suspect you wouldn't be calling them cunts if you were the one who they gave thousands of dollars to, right?
Efrem is so smug.. his love of those million dollar bills was simply too much. I really wanted his wife to be like "REALLY, EFREM??! you daughter has cancer."
2:48 This is my problem with religious doctrine. God gets to choose. 1. Cure her instantly, 2. Want her to take medication for three years, and 3. Allow her to die. God's the best and we shouldn't question. (Bollocks.) For an all loving God to allow parents to watch their child suffer basically tells you what your God really is.
these are the most selfless, caring people i have ever had the fortune to watch. this is a clear example of how god wants us to live - peacefully and selflessly. i hope that lilttle girl pulls through.
5/10 for the freethinking rebellion. 1/10 for the slavish automaton mindset to their reverential culture based on subjective interpretation of ancient bronze age myths, which have no valid justification, either morally or philosophically. **The '1' is for their defence of their principle (generous, I know...). Their officially sanctioned 'shunning' is a shameful example of bigotry and intolerance, all in the name of 'tradition'. Such a shame...
The Amish community has not stepped in to provide powerful support. They have stepped in to bribe them with medical payments in exchange for their submission to the rules by not driving a car.
Really interesting stuff. It's always nice to see different cultures and gain insights into the religious cults of the world.
However, it makes wonder what would happen if I put up a "There's probably no God"-sign in the middle of Amish Central? I should probably just convince myself to not play mad s****l scientist? Damn, these questions are hard sometimes :/
I'm sure that the bishops told him that god gave his daughter cancer because he won't follow their rules. Now, to shut him up & make him conform, they'll encourage everyone to help her by paying for evil modern technology. When she lives they'll take all of the credit.
Thanks for posting this series. An amazing inside look into a culture we know so little about. I"m glad they take their children to actual doctors instead of what some cults do and just pray. The Amish are smart enough to realize that modern medicine does work. Perhaps they view it as a gift from god?
I actually respect the Amish church Bishops who don't look to convert others than I do the Stoltzfus, the two rebellious men on this show who practice evangelical Christianity. Evangelical Christianity is the worst form, they don't know how to avoid conflict or stay out of other people's life, they try to convert people and influence politics.
On the other hand I respect the Amish for doing the opposite, and it's really because they're the opposite that they survive.
It's all Gods will, and punishment for her fathers not worshiping correctly. He pissed off God. That little girl will suffer and maybe die, and maybe burn in hell because the all knowing and all seeing God is either OK with it, can't or wont do anything about it.
@Draugo They have good medical care, for those who can pay. The rest is left to fend for themselves, or locked into a lifelong debt.
What the medicare reform opponents fail to realize is that there is a chance that people would over all have fewer sick days, have they had free access to medicare, and that the cost of that medicare would be lower overall, as people would be seeing assistance sooner, before benign problem becomes a serious issue, instead of trying to fix it themselves.
They aren't commies, the church doesn't own their property or size their farms to build industrial dumping sites like the Soviet Union and China do.
Each Amish family runs their own buisness and their own house. Their communal living is community based (much different than international socialism), it's similar to tribalism than to despotic socialist that urge people to abandon their culture and above all, their religion. The S.U was a murdering atheist state.
Actually, the soviet union was only a socialist nation in theory, when in practice it was run like a fascist regime. There has yet to be a true, first world, socialist nation. Sounds like you are a capitalist who likes putting price tags on everything and turning people into wage slaves from monopolizing corporations. Please tell me if I am wrong...
I have always found it idiotic that people think Socialism is evil. The closest thing we have to an actually socialist country would be some of the goverments in Western Europe.
"The S.U was a murdering atheist state." That's amusing, as if that their leaders were atheist had something to do with it. The majority of it was done by Stalin, and Stalin was a totalitarian monster comparable with Hitler.
"Well 2 things will happen. Either you have faith & you trust that will allow your heart to be happy & rejoice regardless of the outcome & if you dont trust youre going to worry & have fear & youll just have a horrible 3 years regardless of the outcome".
This is an clear example of the God Concept being a coping mechanism. I wouldnt have the heart to tell them that if it were really god's will, they wouldnt have Dr's medding w/ god's so-called plan.
In the end, as human beings, if we were able to give them all the knowledge we have on our universe now, they'd abandon the god concept altogether. But teaching takes time.
Coping mechanism? Forgive me friend, but I don't think you are very well informed. The "peace and joy" that is mentioned so much in the New Testament is CLEARLY not a promise of a perfect life, that is mentioned plenty of times. In fact, Christ mentioned hardships as being a part of the Christian walk. The difference is that we can go through hard times realizing that Earth is but a temporary situation and God is in control. So in a way, it allows us to cope better than....
others because we know the truth. That doesn't make the "God Concept" a coping mechanism, it just allows us to accept hardships with the smile and peace this Amish man shows without the bitterness and anguish someone else would goo through upon discovering the Leukemia in his daughter. As for the last part of your statement, again you don't sound very informed. The Bible NEVER promises a perfect world once we are Christians, that ship has sailed long ago.
We have, however, obtained eternal life through Christ. Which is the source of hope and joy for all who believe in the Savior. Im just trying to point something out, not start arguments or accuse anyone of ignorance. I just want to help :)
Even if you don't believe in God, I hope He blesses you richly with the truth you seek. :)

Rather barbaric in the US to charge that much on really ill person per day......
The girl is lucky that she has charity to help pay for her bills......other 40,000 Americans per year are not so lucky......
Is she were in Canada, Europe, or other countries with universal healthcare....she would have gotten the care she needs with little or no bills.
Ilovenausicaa 10 months ago
@Ilovenausicaa well thats capatiliasm. private insurance companies rule healthcare.
THEOWNEROFNOTHING345 10 months ago
@Ilovenausicaa I'm Dutch and I just can't imagine a country that would allow a child to die if her parents could not afford to pay for her treatment. Here we all have healthcare, it's absolutely required. But because everyone has it, cost has been quite low. It's been steeply on the rise the past two decades though, and there is upheaval about the introduction of the free market in healthcare and the recent budget cuts. But even now it's MUCH cheaper and better than it is in the US.
Annique 8 months ago 26
@Annique Same in New Zealand :) 'Socialised medicine' as the Americans love to call it is actually a good thing and ensures free and equal care for all.

@Annique In USA its all about corporate greed. The value of your life is worth nothing. Bullsheet talks money walks!
nzbbs 2 months ago
@Annique We have a law that no hospital can turn someone away in an emergency,so in effect we all have emergency care in the U.S, whether or not we can pay. It is definitely a touchy subject though, about religious freedom and parents rights! But there are no kids dying from lack of healthcare in America, that's an election year myth!

wealthmaker247 1 year ago
@wealthmaker247 in my experience, living in close proximity to several amish communities in the northern indiana area, that is not true: the sins of the father do not affect the children, in Amish theology. Things might be different in Lancaster, though.

bobbypatz There's the problem- a faulty view of God. God doesn't give cancer He is the healer. Cancer is a result of sin that came in the world through Adam.
barbourjohn 1 year ago
A good example of logical fallacy and circular reasoning.
There was no such thing as “Adam”, buy a scientific book or visit a library for fucks sake.
And cancer is a mutagenic disease of the eukaryotic cell. Not the by-product of some imaginary crime.
The fact that she has cancer is no one’s responsibility, especially not the responsibility of a fictional character or an imaginary invisible sky daddy.
I wish we could cure religious insanity and ignorance.

Islam is a danger to humanity.
mytv80 1 year ago
@mytv80 The whole lesson I'm getting out of these videos is that it isn't right to shun people for having different beliefs.. Just live and let live we're not different...and those things we use to make ourselves right and everyone else wrong (dogma) are artificial and die with the body. If we focus on difference than we are adding to illusion by furthering seperation.
nicholasrehl 1 year ago
@nicholasrehl the lesson i got is that different religious beliefs are a lot alike in that they feed off of each others delusions. they are all blatantly nonsensical, some being more extreme than the other. live & let live would be fine in a world of lucky charms and bubblicious bubble gum. but we live in a real world where evidently, ppl are hearing their 'god's' voice telling them to kill each other! religion focuses on the differences, furthering separation, adding illusion to the delusion.

"take her home with glory" here's the purpose of religion in a nutshell, meaning keeping sanity and not becoming a "wreck" when your loved one is about to die and rot away..
FantastyckplastycK 1 year ago
@FantastyckplastycK I don't have a religion and I didn't become a wreck when this happened to me and my family. I understand what you're saying; however, to condone religion with all of its other degrading and damaging baggage, simply because it is a good crutch in times of distress, is distasteful to put it bluntly.
MilitantScience 1 year ago
@MilitantScience in no way whatsoever am i condoning the regligion! what i was saying is that, religion is an illusion for those who can NOT see eye to eye with the reality.. in other words, for those indoctrinated, supersticious, uneducated and all in all not very bright .. and there is a pretty sound theory that the origin of THE religion connects to the death the close one..

2:48 This is my problem with religious doctrine. God gets to choose. 1. Cure her instantly, 2. Want her to take medication for three years, and 3. Allow her to die. I'm sure that the bishops told him that god gave his daughter cancer because he won't follow their rules. Now, to shut him up & make him conform, they'll encourage everyone to help her by paying for evil modern technology. When she lives they'll take all of the credit.

On the other hand I respect the Amish for doing the opposite, and it's really because they're the opposite that they survive.
lilspitfire12 1 year ago
It's all Gods will, and punishment for her fathers not worshiping correctly. He pissed off God. That little girl will suffer and maybe die, and maybe burn in hell because the all knowing and all seeing God is either OK with it, can't or wont do anything about it.

Draugo 1 year ago 2

The S.U was a murdering atheist state.
lilspitfire12 1 year ago
Actually, the soviet union was only a socialist nation in theory, when in practice it was run like a fascist regime. There has yet to be a true, first world, socialist nation. @Key2daUnderground
XxCardMagicianxX 1 year ago

others because we know the truth.
