it's called "kreuzknoten" in germany...

i'm fireman and we use this knot often to connect 2 ropes, but they have to be of the same material and have the same diameter...

don't use this knot for other combinations of ropes, it can disconnect and you can get injured!!!

we use the "schotenstich" for ropes which are not of the same material and diameter, but i don't know, how this knot is called in english and, by the way, i want to excuse my bad english ;-)

Reef knots WILL slip unless the rope is identical - if joining two different ropes use a sheet bend.

Maybe it might also be called the 'square knot' but the real term is the reef knot

This is a dangerous way of making it. If the wrong end is on the top, the knot would easily slip. A better way of making it would be to make one loop, and then weaving the other one through.

This knot shouldn't be used to connect ropes of different diameter. Instead a weaver`s knot should be used.

The reason that these special knots are used is about strenght. A regular knot reduces the strength of the rope by half.When force is applied, the knot would put pressure on the knot,snapping the rope.
