I know this is an old post, but I just heard my favorite band (Steely Dan of course), live and there never was and never will be a band even remotely nearing the greatness of this group. I myself am a working musician and doing my solo show, I create MIDI sequences for my backup stuff. I do lots of SD material but let me tell you...tackling any one of their songs is a month long project for sure. Steely Dan...just doesn't get any better than them.
Anybody find or know the chords to this one. Trying to transcribe it now but its just too hard. I know its a C7 ,Gm7, C7, G7, C7 to I think Dbmu, leading up to the chorus Eb7 Bm7 than its sounds like some kind of Slash chord.. E bass. It's driving me nuts cause I want this one bad. You can find most of their early stuff but not much of these record other than maybe Cousin Dupree.
I have played for over thirty years, I get more people wanting to hear S.D. than any other. People dissing this music would be like cavemen trying to understand Emerson or Thoreau IF they could even read.
No one, I mean NO ONE has ever, ever compared to Steely Dan. This is one of my favorite songs because Donald Fagen says my name... Melanie! Besides, we share a birthday, January 10th. I LOVE ME SOME STEELY DAN!!! They just can't play ANYTHING badly!
whoa... Cornelius Bumpus (briefly)...! thanks for posting... these guys taught a generation to aim higher... the pinnacle of american pop/jazz/highbrow/lowbrow... unique
what can you say to two men who have influenced you musically for almost 40 years without it sounding mushy trite or simply inadequate. Living in the land of Oz I never ever expected them to tour down under, but they came here a year or two ago - superlative and all the other words that mean A+. So glad they reformed and began to tour again. Please come back to Australia!
Thanks throe68........ FaaarLeft: I like you attention to detail, really, but lighten up on the leather straps; Walter is tasty; and we should always remember that he played bass many times
@Markgr122 --- Yep, good point, he is a phenomenal musician and he has left his mark on so much of the SD catalog.....he's got a great sense of humor too
It's wierd that he did that on the same song in another concert. It was the same mistake in the same place. I think he's cracking up about an old memory it brings or something. He's still the man.
I'm thinking of getting tickets when they play here, but it's about 70 euro. That's just a little too much for me. Concerttickets are through the roof right now.
Herington's tele sqeezed through a Guytron amp make me want to put my guitar away and just watch and learn. Why don't these guys do a complete live DVD of everything not on "2 against nature"? I'd even pay real money!
I love those guys I been a fan since 1972 & have all there records & now cd's & been to a few concerts and they are the best in the world BUT I've been writeing them for years like the Beatles say NO REPLY and like them a baby bommer a 1949er and like them 1967 was my favorite year I was eighteen
A Steely Dan concert is akin to witnessing the passage of a single multiplex vehicle the size of a motorcade or convoy, its various segments comprising limousines, ice-cream wagons, hearses, lunch-carts, ambulances, black marias, and motorcycle outriders, all of it Rolls-grade and lacquered like a tropical beetle. The horns glint, as it rolls majestically past, splendid, a thing of legend, and utterly peculiar unto itself.
This is a bit slow. I worship all that they do but this performance is a bit lackluster. Horns are right there though. Keith Carlock is in the pocket as always but he could've made this song twice as good by pushing the tempo a bit.
I can't walk past Dean & Deluca without laughing out loud and reciting the lines from this song... (I love the backup singer's Operetta version here).
What is wrong with you guys? I have posted before about this song - Hey Nineteen - and I am an educated mental health therapist - every time I read something so bad about the band or about this song in particular helps me understand the folks who are criticizing have bigger problems than what they think they are dissing. c'mon guys. This band is briliant.
@stinkyred904 Pal, I couldn't agree more. One of the most sophisticated jazzy-pop-rock bands of all time. These guys were always in the groove. The best session player's in the business were lining up to play with these guys, and be a part of producer Gary Katz's musical/sound wizardry in the studio. I.E. Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro, Wayne Shorter . I'll stop here. There wouldn't be room to continue. Thanx for the post buddy.
@CoreaKixx420 funny you say that about Katz. I have always wondered why their CDs sound awesome! There is such a huge difference between their CD and another group. The clarity, bass, everything! Know what i'm talking about??
like dave letterman, but not quite as bad as newt gingrich tho He should just shave it so he can look like the martians in the twilight zone bt fucking w walt doesn't noodle on guitar, that is such a slam BSL shame on you
I'm from Mich. and it's honor they put this video on and there live cd,from MIchigan I've been a fan since 1972 and have all there songs Fagen don't say why back in 67 man that was my favorited year they are the best in history but I wrote them through the years and no reply
"Fine Columbian" refers to the excellent weed that was very popular around the time this song came out. Columbian Gold, coke followed quickly on it's heels. Awesome song, this is what music is supposed to sound like kids.
You first wave boomers...like clinton...yea...i didnt inhale..puleese. You had fun, we got busted. You know the best thing about the 70's?.....THER'RE OVER. Nuf said. Someone asked on another vid why they named the band after a metalic steam powered didlo. As i said before, if you dont get that, you dont get Steely Dan. PERIOD.
Nuh uh?? A metalic steam powered dildo? Oh how sad, and oh how happy I was back then. Its interesting that the younger group doesn't seem to get anything - no metaphors, no analogies. I mean, these songs are filled with some of the best lyrics....
That's the point. Subtle. Disciplined. Slavish devotion to perfection. Artists, not performers, although they can perform. It is their ability to produce a product that is universal in its appeal, yet it speaks to each of us privately, making the experience personal, as if the songs were written just for you. Not "in your face". Notice they rarely sing about themselves.BTW, since you are a shrink, kids today suffer from helicopter parenting. Thats the prob.
I just read one of the reviews of Aja, (the album), and the reviewer says that the name Steely Dan is derived from a sex toy in William Burrough's "Naked Lunch." Interesting.
Yes. That is the point. So irreverant. Imagine how they have this life long joke on all who go around saying their name over and over never really knowing that they are saying the name of a dildo over and over. Ive said it over and over, people that dont get why they named their group after a metal dildo dont get Stelly Dan. PERIOD. The 2 smart kids in the back of the class who made fun of everyone and still got straight A's.
man, you TOTALLY get these guys and where they're coming from, IMO. Nice to see/hear/read some posts from a fellow Steely lover who really appreciates what I believe, they are ,all about. Cool.
I am 57 years old and a Woodstock alumna, and Hey Nineteen is my favorite song and favorite piece of music ever!!! I have a real hard time when I see the lines of 'the fine Columbian' - and I am a licensed psychotherapist!!!
Carlospc, thaaaaaaank you so much! Steely Dan should be mandatory listening for today's generation of hip-hoppers (sic!) rappers and all the other would-be musicians who can't play more than three chords in a song! There, I said it!
Don't waste your time even mentioning those guys man,the only thing that's on their mind is "golden chains" and lady's in hot pants, they play NO chords at all,the word harmony has been forgotten, Musically back to the Stone Age,greets.
In his defense, try the tour schedule logistics, the planes, the bus, hotels, gear failure, fatigue, continuous intesity of the gig nite after nite. All these guys and gals are huge troopers, bar none.
What happened to Fagen at the begining of Hey Nineteen. Did he choke on the word or something. I saw them for the first time on this tour, and he was flawless. I saw them three times this year and he was fucking up a lot of lyrics. Also at both Boston '07 shows Becker did the talking part and it was way strange.
Haha....Fagan does indeed get a little tounge tied there. He's slipped a few times at a show I was fortunate enough to be at the front of the crowd for. Well I guess all we can say is that he too is human and capable of mistakes in a live situation....Steely Dan is really good....but no one's perfect....
They did that in Birmingham (UK) when I saw them in July.. gives some time for some quips you know, Don's a very funny guy and that kind of thing really made the show even better for me
Donald left words out of the show at Summerfest 07, and when the crowd starting singing along, he even pointed out to someone in the audience and said 'Retha Franklin thats right! Guess they do that at alot of shows.
Most underrated band of ALL TIME!!

Often confused with 'showmanship'!
