Notice Patton's reaction at the end, when NIMROD was played, music that has great meaning to the British. He gave everything he had to a free HK. It was not to be, but Patton gave his all.
@truongyashin Dear Maoist Stooge, I don't think you fully understood the speech, but then you started with your own view. HK Chinese are a very special people. Most came to HK in search of a better life. Many, many ended up highly educated families, and deeply devoted to HK. That would not have happened without British Rule. Many of my friends, HK Chinese and UK who stayed on, report all of the worse in modern Chinese cities. Is there little wonder. God save Hong Kong and God Save the Queen!
In one of his speeches recently he mentioned that his departure from Hong Kong was very glamourous and pompous but when he landed in London there was no official car to take him home so he took a cab to reach his house in London.
Forget about Culture Revolution or what so called the Great Leap Forward, all Hong Konger won't give a damn. Yes, Hong Kong did handed over to PRC since 1997, but how about the 7M Hong Kongers theirs heart, spirit and soul? I wonder!
Hong Kong and Macao have always belonged to China ! But the dirty drug pushers came and forced China at gunpoint to turn over Hong Kong to them. China and the Chinese people remembers well the century of humiliation.
@twenlil Yet the Chinese people don't remember the 30m people who died of starvation during 'The Great Leap Forward', or the purges during Mao's 'Cultural Revolution?'
LOL, China is blossoming into the next global Superpower, and tons of Hong Kong people are learning Mandarin. Boy can one simple financial crisis and a blistering Chinese economy change everything.
@fb8568 That's true especially on handover night it was raining as if Britannia were crying. Funny Hong Kongers were celebrating on Handover day even welcoming Chinese troops in as I saw on clips - maybe just pro-Beijing loyalists.
Sad for HK that like i said before China won't let Hk go and that's why the PLA is there to guard against any uprisings. HK people don't want any uprisings cos they want peace so they said and most would eventfully accept Chinese rule.
@Nagadomo Well under the 1984 treaty Britain promised never to go back to HK and Chinese law created after Taiwan threatened break away from China some years ago make it impossible for HK to declare themselves independent too.
China says it is now Chinese sovereignty terrority means the PLA have right to defend it.
China is the strongest country in the world. Lots of dumb retards here thinking and wishing that China would collapse. Their retarded comments reveal their true face like a wolf in sheepsclothing being revealed to be a wolf. Or like Indians like to say: SNAKES pretending to be good and warm but speak with FORKED tongue.
China will collapse alright...600 years after the collapse of america.
@xxwzaebd: wow YOUR 13 year-old pre-adolescent intellectual-level view of the world surely must make everything so cleanly "black" and "white" huh?
Why don't you try to getting REAL facts as opposed to listening to stupidity-causing rightwing radio.
Guess what shit-for-brains China AND South Korea both fear a collapse of North Korea because it will bring refugees into China BUT IT WILL BRING A FLOOD OF REFUGEES INTO SOUTH KOREA.
Sadly,South Korea is the only country capable of defeating China in an eventual ground war. Though highly unlikely, the war would happen in Manchuria once Chicom tries to get control over whole Korea. Korea will win;however, the viictory will be pyrrhic and thus of little meaning after all; but China will disintegrate since the ethnic minorities will uprise
@xxwzaebd: YOUR infantile-intellectual development level may not understand this but a massive flood of North Korean refugees into South Korea will cause MASSIVE economic problems for the South Koreans.
The South Koreans and China are stuck with a North Korea that won't reform and is a economic basketcase and threatens both South Korea and China economically.
Your less than infantile-intellectual development level may not understand the fact why there will be no flood of any massive refugees. You neither understand the saying of 'Das Boot ist voll' nor geopolitical interests and related bargaining. Give and take, that is what is less than infantile levels like you cannot understand-at least one deal has been reported to have been made. You have no say in any game anyway; that is the reality.
@xxwzaebd: But hey complicated facts are far too difficult for YOUR 12 year-old-intellectual development to comprehend and it's easier for someone of YOUR little child-level-intellectual development to sit and drool and masturbate to stupidity-causing rightwing froth on the radio than to have to think huh?
But the complicated facts are far too too too difficult for YOUR much less than 12-year old(in fact, a tiny minuscle diminutive fraction of that) intellectual development to comprehend and it is easieer for someone of YOUR little diminutive minuscle negligible less-than-child level intellectual development to sit, drool and do nothing productive while people like me and all others lead a productive and useful life. You=unuseful entity. Period.
Good man in memories. Hong Kongers should have negotiated independence back in the '70s.Of course it won't work now; there should be preparation for getting independent after 2-3 decades when China ultimately collapses after it will have achieved tyrannical communist rule over the world.
Every hong konger with a heart misses the british rule. The british turns a small fishing village into an international city and saved us from the dark days of the evil communist reign in china. I wish hong kong was never returned to china.
I am fm HK. Actually, I always miss last 4 Governors espcially Sir Crawford Murray MacLehose and Sir David Willison.Undoubtedly, they have invaluable contribution to HK. I am very grateful for their effort on thier term of office. Being objective, our so-called chief executive or SAR government cannot be compared with them. Hong Kong still live on the values and the asset which the UK Govt and Governors leave although the values and the asset are fading out now.
Watching this video again in 2010 made me sad..... what Hong Kong had was unique.... it was something that does not exist anywhere else, now we are just part of China among its many cities, and quickly being taken over of all our pride and joy of people of Hong Kong. I miss the old days in HK. Good old British colony...
Okey,But still HK is china territory and now it's back. if you really shamed to be a chinese you could go to england, then u'll be feel more joy and pride.
Sorry, but I think you are getting me wrong here. I never said that I am ashamed of being Chinese, I am not, and I do not feel pride and joy for being part of British or even being in England, as where I am from in Northern Ireland I do not really like England at all.
What I am trying to say is that HK was a special city, as it was part of a powerful country but yet have the influence which is very very different, even though it was just a dot on the map, it was special, unique.
Okay, so I might say that I am no big Chinese Government fan, but I do c the way forward, it is just that, when Hong Kong used to be a special dot on the world map, it is now only one city of many in China, even though it is a SAR, there just isn't the buzzing feeling of how diverse Hong Kong was anymore, and I am sad to see that side of HK go. I know that u r just trying to defend the country, as u have used strong words, but pls try to understand what I am saying.
@sheenbay01 Dont waste your breath on these SNAKES and WOLVES. They are demons wearing human disguises. As if going back to England would make them happy. England has been depression for the last 4 decades. Going back there will depress anyone. Britains "great rule" over Hong Kong has been overexaggerated. In fact, Hong Kong is so succesfull because its the closest thing to true capitalism in the whole world, even today. Yet britain itself is not even capitalistic.
Remember these fxcking British made a huge profit by issuing the fake British National to HK ppl which never honored even by UK. Hong Kong ppl sometimes too on 9.

Only some little douchebag like
douggydoug2008 think this is the saddest moment of HK. Chinese land should be controlled by Chinese, not by British hypocrites.
This is 2008 and we are in the information age, UK still think they can hide all those extremely dirty shits they have done throughout history and act like a holy angel??? not a chance!
I'm a Aussie expat born in Hong Kong and lived here my whole 20 years, these days I'm here at the bequest of the PRC government on borrowed time. Today as I sit writing this at a star bucks in a MTR station most people around me would agree this is the saddest day in Hong Kong's history. China haven't done much to Hong Kong yet but they have the worlds biggest seaport at their fingertips now and it's only a matter of time before this "One country, two systems" bullshit goes belly up.
This is the saddest moment in the history of Hong Kong. Since 1/7/1997, Hong Kong has fallen into the hand of the evil dictatorial totalitarian 'People's Republic of China' regime; the proud and prestigious is gone! Hong Kong is always BRITISH! Long live British Hong Kong! DOWN WITH 'People's Republic of China'! DOWN WITH 'Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, 'People's Republic of China''!

This is the happy moment in the history of Hong Kong. Hong Kong is always China! Long live Chinese Hong Kong! DOWN WITH 'British China'! DOWN WITH UK.
Just for your information, you've made a grammatical mistake in your 2nd sentence: you should either say 'Hong Kong is always Chinese' or 'Hong Kong is always China's' Anyway, use bloody Chinese which you are most familiar w/ instead of English if you can hardly handle our language. What's more, there's never sth called 'British China': the UK's gracious enough to leave you bloody Chinese a piece of land.
The world moves on, and the PRC today is not totalitarian - that's North Korea. It is ironic, however, that under (a modifying) Communist leadership workers' rights are largely limited and the formation of unions are often violently resisted by companies. As for HK, Patten here acknowledges its success is down to CHINESE men and women, albeit under British rule of law. Let's all move on. Here's to HK.
not all of those CHINESE would have identified themselves as CHINESE, certainly not going by their passports. I think people should tolerate the fact that ppl in HK may wish to identify themselves as one of two nationalities or perhaps even both.
"I think people should tolerate the fact that ppl in HK may wish to identify themselves as one of two nationalities or perhaps even both. "
Yes, that's a good point. Ethnically Chinese, certainly, but I know many who refer to themselves as HK Chinese. As Patten goes on to say here: "Now Hong Kong people are to run Hong Kong..."
@douggydoug2008 Doug is the typical fucktard troll account from a stupid white supremist roaming around youtube. These fucktards live in their own racist bubbles and think that the rest of the world is stupid enough to fall for it. The racist white colonialists stole Hong Kong from China and then pretend that China steals Hong Kong from Britain? What logic and upside down world do these retards come from? I know the answer: FROM THE UNEMPLOYED AND UNCOMPETITIVE SHITHOLE THEY CALL HOME.
Not a chance. Communist/nationalist and militarist China will rule HK in just a few decades. Then, all your freedoms will be gone, and soon enough the world will have to face and defeat the dragon. Sad days will come...

have you even heard of NWO? go outside HK and see who is the biggest beast ok idiot! I wanna slap your face, for being such a political idiot, and worse of all, putting comments using your limited political knowledge.
NWO will be a 100% control using highly advanced technologies, your every single movement, including your brain activities, will be recorded, and will be used against you whenever they want! how about that huh?
soon enough the entire world will have to fight UK & US and stop NWO
Forgive my ignorance, for I do not understand. I'm from a Big Brother state you see and part of the upcoming New World Order, as you have pointed out. Are you suggesting that Communist China is to be the last bastion of free thought and speech?
do u know what is "free thought and speech"? u think u have those things? u r just a little sheep and your "free thought" is based on what information you get from watching garbage soap operas.
how about u go in front of elizabeth and say "go to hell you fucking old dying witch and bring your family with you, I will rule this country!!!" then you will learn what is "free thought and speech"! lmfao.
My, such hostility. You think that of the Queen and you spoke of it, did you not?
If I were to be granted an audience with her and to say such things, I think my ejection would be down to a lack of courtesy on my part - that or it may be feared I am planning to commit regicide. It must be said my totalitarian government does not permit the murder of heads of state.
I am curious though, am I allowed to say these things to Ma Ying-jeou?
We do get a choice on whether or not to keep the monarchy anyway if public opinion demands it. As had happened in Ireland and Australia. The Aussies voted to keep her and the Irish voted to get rid of her. Its called a constitutional monarchy
I'm afraid I can't totally agree with your point of 'the UK had to hand HK back to the backward Chinese government', since HK was never part of the 'People's Republic of China' in the past; it'd be better if you say 'the UK had to hand HK to the backward Chinese government'
@superyan99 not that I'm advocating the Chinese, but I think you'll find that the HK economy grew tenfold after the handover to China. being a westerner myself, I must concede that the future really lies with Asia now
@superyan99 We had to hand HK back and we have had no choice but to hand it over because HK is legally belonged to China, not Britain cos the Chinese claimed it was illegally taken in 1842 and again in 1898 and have legal right to take HK back.

Yea, it is true in that Hong Kong was WAY better under British rule, because British people get lots of money out of the Hong Kong government and society at that time. Please recall, you are only a thief of our Chinese Land Hong Kong.
UK people, your prime minister already announced UK is not going to spend as much money as in 2008 Beijing Olypmics.
Because we don't need to prove anything . . everyone already knows us and trusts us not like the chinese. We spend our money on improving our country, not on opening ceremonies and space projects. Plus, we have a democracy. Its obvious you're not Chinese because if you were, this would be censored and you'd be thrown in jail.

We are struggling for history due to the leasing of Hong Kong to UK under an unfair contract, struggling for the "nice" things intentionally laid down by UK under their usual colonial policy. The billion results achieved by China in Beijing 2008 Olympic Games are the landmark of our still determinaton.
UK, please catch up, in 2012 Olympics. It is a dream, but never comes true.
Although I'm a brit, and only 15, having just returned from Hong Kong, i believe if it wher still under our rule, it would be stable and safe yes, but nothing like what it has become, i think the handover was one of the wisest (and nicest) things our government has done. I love Hong Kong, they claim they have problems which they do, totaly, but compared to say London or Glasgow Hong Kong is Heaven and it's so clean and you can breathe so easy and even in the summer it's just bliss.
I applaud Christopher Patten's courage and honesty in writing this. He has established himself in my mind, as a man who cares about the freedom and future of the Hong Kong people. This may be controversial but I am happy that Hong Kong was a colony because my parents and others saw it as the holy grail in a time when the government of China was suppressing its citizens. Yes it was a colony that made Britain money but in a world that is never black and white, we need to look at the pros and cons.
"preparations for the independence of scores of new countries (sometimes successfully) as free and plural societies, ended one hot and wet night on the dazzling shore of Hong Kong's harbor. It could have ended worse. But (as I will argue) Hong Kong deserved better, deserved better of Britain. The way we in Britain have done things, the sort of people we have tried to be, tells us that bluntly. It was a sad way to go. And I fear that the people we left behind know it."
"it fell below the highest standards of its colonial record in the very last of its significant colonial responsibilities. The Empire story of the most humane and well intentioned of the colonial powers, a story that at its best encompasses scholar-administrators who knew and loved the distant lands they goverened more than the country whose name they served, the dissemination across the tropical jungles and icy wastes of the impartial clemencies of the rule of law, the usually peaceful..."
"...They have taught me a lot, and Hong Kong's superbly led, loyal, and professional civil service, and the leaders of the city's democratic and civil liberties movement, made me think harder than ever before about why I went into politics and what I believe. It will always be the greatest regret of my public life that though Britain goverened these Chhinese men and women very well in many ways, leaving behind a rich and free society..."
I do think that Christopher Patten does care a great deal about Hong Kong. I am writing a term paper on how HK has changed since 1997 and I would like to share with you all this quote from his book published in 1998.
Perhaps it explains why he looked heavy with emotions after his speech.
@8utterfly604 You would do well to write a paper about how much Hong Kong has changed after Britain stole it from China during the Opium wars to the second world war. And than the period after the second world war to 2010. Britains "superb" rule of Hong Kong has left Hong Kong to become a 3rd world cesspool up and until WW2. So much for the smart british governance. If youre going to look at history, dont distort the facts or come to conclusions out of context.
LOL times have changed!! China is Capitalist now! And stronger then ever before. After 100 years of turmoil, invasions (8 power and W.W.2) and colonization, China MY COUNTRY finally founds the right path. I came to understand the important of unity , patriotism and what it means to be Chinese.
Oh dont forget, most REFUGEES were running from the Japs invasion in W.W.2.
For the millions that escaped the bloody cultural revolution into HK, thank GOD for the British. How many innocent souls have died by Mao's bloody regime in that time period?
My existance and life is owed to the British and I will not forget that. For those who has never lived through that time period, knows nothing about the evil and hardship under the old Chinese regime and the generosity of the British HK government for saving millions.
thank the British ?? and Americans !!! How many Chinese people have they killed and raped and tortured in the 8 power invasion "Opium War" of China? Millions, i tell ya! Brits and Americans were just DRUG dealers who invaded China to secure their market to sale OPIUM/Herion/Coke in CHina!
THANK GOD THE BRITS leave and HK is returned to the MOTHERLAND!!!!!!
As a HK born Ethnic Chinese, I'm ashame of those who talks shit about the Brits instead of being thankful. The Chinese gov has done far worse against the Chinese people compared to the British. Ungrateful bastards.
Damn !! a Chinese wanna be WHITE! "running DOG" i dislike your kind of White washed Chinese!
i think you should be proud of WHO you are which is a Chinese! China , England or what not, each has a shady history! I mean..thats just how the world is! China had the CUl-Rev and T'square! Brits had the IRA, War in Iraq, the countless invasions of other nations. But NO China is always wrong in ur mind! Cuz the Brits or any western nation is always right BUT NOT CHINA ?
I dont hate!!!! I m frustrated that "China" has been discriminated against, invaded into, colonized, raped, & tortured for so many years! I dont blame other countries except for ourselves "the Chinese ppl" for this. Why? Because we were weak and never united, lack patriotism, selfish and some ,like you, actually fell in love with those that invaded our motherland!!?? what a sad truth!
I think it is time for every Chinese person to LIFT THEIR HEADS UP HIGH N SAY THat WE LOVE OUR COUNTRY!
lastly! I think under The NEW Capitalist China today, CHinese people are much more UNITED and patriotic then before! i think it is time for to look and search deep inside your soul and heart...... To FIND URSELF!! Once u c who u really are...u will be much happier!
There's nothing wrong to have national pride, but one can do it without insulting other people's skin color or culture. I accept people by who they are as a human being. I consider people of all skin color as my brothers and sisters. Once you start accepting people for who they really are, you will be a happier and peaceful person as well. Having said that, I think China is heading toward the right direction and I respect that.
i think you are too sensitive!! i am not insulting other cultures or nations!! Didn't u read what i wrote? i said that there is no one to blame except for ourselves "the Chinese ppl" that we were weak and not united which gave other countries a chance to invade China back in the early 1900's and W.W.2.
Accepting?? Lol tell that to the rest of the world? Tell them to Accept THE NEW China and stop judging it for what it is NOT!!
I think u are not normal too! LOL who's to say what's normal or not? But nways, u must had grew up with WHITE boys! perhaps they have brain washed u with WHITE POWER ideas when u were a child in school!
If u mock the MILLIONS OF Chinese who were murdered in the OPIUM WAR then u can go to hell TOo !!
I respect those that die in any war or revolutions! Like those Black slaves who were tortured and or murdered in the U.S. Or the MIllions who were slaughtered by the British empire conquest!
I grew up with Americans as an American. Which includes ethnic background of Chinese, Koreans, Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics. I don't see my friends by their skin color, I see them by their names. My wife is white, but I married her for who she is, not b/c she's white. B/c she loves me she now speaks and writes in Cantonese and Mandarin. If you focus on the good things of other cultures, it may open your eyes.
Good 4 U!! But 1st our debate was not ON RACISM !! which i am not!! Our debated was about the British RULE, "colonial OPPRESSION", over HK. And you thanking the Brits for colonizing HK... I took that has an insult to the China, "My Motherland"! The Brits (whom i dont hate) colonized HK because of its strategic geography position. Hk is the ,door way / jump point, into China! And the Brits used HK as a jump point to traffic OPIUM into China back then!
When you start saying how WHITE people are evil, that's racism. My point is that Great Britain has taken a almost non populated land a turn it into on of the best cities in the world. They didn't force 7 million people to immigrate to HK, people move to HK b/c of the good things the british has done. So that's not oppression when people go there by choice. I agree, the opium war was wrong by the Brits, that's history. But they have helped the local chinese post WWII tremendously. Peace.
I Never said that Whites were evil! Check the logs, did i say that? QUOTE IT THEN!
The Brits opened HK to international trade but it's the HARD working and Fast learing opportunistic HK people that made it successful. The brits just kicked back and collected their HIGH TAXES while HKers worked their ass off!
I agree, the opium war is history BUT so is the cul-revol!
ok, perhaps I read u wrong. Forget about cult rev and opium war. Lets talk about taxes. HK is one of the lowest taxes collected in the world under the Brit. That's why Billionaires love HK. It's a flat tax system at 16%. Corp TAX at a flat rate of 17.5%. Tax rates are low by global standards and there is very little double-taxation of income that is saved and invested. HK is ranked as the world's freest economy according to both Economic Freedom of the World and the Index of Economic Freedom.
LOl what about the 100% taxation for automobiles? Rank number 1 in the world! Buy 1 car in Hk is the price of 2 elsewhere! And the inflation in the house market before 97?thanks to the brits for that!
LOL the First time ever in the history of HK did the gov't not only lowered taxes but returned tax money to its citizens was right after the handover when the stock market crash in 1997!
ONLY 100% tax? Be grateful you don't live in Singapore, where it's even higher, or Malaysia, where they put 300% duty on imported cars so everyone will buy Protons. I suspect that it's even higher in mainland China!
OH after reading this comment of yours again! A bell rang....LOL ..... u may NOt be a racist in America but HELL YA racism exist in the U.S! And you and i both know that! Have you heard about the "Jena 6"?? L.A Riots back in 1994? If you think racism dont exist in America...LOL...
Racism exists everywhere, even in china. But my point is that for every 1 racist, there are 10 non racist people in this world. I focus on the good things of the US. My parents weren't forced to moved here by the US. My parents came to the US by the good grace of the American government. They were persecuted by China. I have been discriminated before, but I'm not going to hate all white people b/c of one fool. I rather focus on the good people.
I agree racism exist everywhere, and that there are more non-racist then racist! But that is not our debate topic!
I just want to show u the history and the cruel intentions behind the brits colonization of HK! And that there is nothing to thank the brits for because their initial intention was not to "save" HK or develop it!
They just saw Hk has a PORT/jump point to traffic opium!
I agree the Brits committed a sin against the Chinese in the Opium war. No question about that. But for the sins committed by their Great Great Grand Fathers, the post WWII Brits has done far more good things for the local chinese. My family took advantage of that during some very bad times from China. I'm just trying to give credit to the Brits where it's due. I think China is heading toward the right direction now as well.
Credit to the brits?? I think it should be the other way around! the brits should thank and give credit to HK and its ppl! B/c HK has made them lots of money! But now its all over now for the brits, they dont control Hk no more! BYE BYE brits "GOD SAVE UR QUEEN"! SO long...Queen Elizabeth the II and farewell forever!
@popoTb I agree with you. Alot of these white supremists really live in their own little bubble world. They are crazy. If britain is so awesome, wise and their rule so just, than how is it that britain has so many problems today. Unless these snakes think that britain ruled hong kong better than they ruled britain itself, they are just living in a pipedream. These snakes are just angry cos Hong Kong turned out to be their crown jewel and they had to give that back to China.
must say you do actually come across as racist and having a severe chip on your shoulder, whether intentional or not. we could drag up past murky water from every countries past till the cows come home - including china's my friend. but singling out the British over a youtube forum just makes you come across as bitter and very anti. myself on the other hand (ex british paratrooper) embrace oriental culture and its finesse.
I cried! Thanks for posting this video! Although I am not British, I can appreciate the greatness of the British culture. When connected with the HK Chinese, this combination is unstoppable! Long live free Hong Kong!
Let the bye gone be bye gone! ANd i am glad that the Brits are OUT! Hong Kong is FINALLY a free PLACE ! FREE from control and FREE FROM COLONIZING! ANd i never like this last governor of HONG KONG !
History? history shows that the Brits invaded China colonizing it! Yes the Brits provided Capitalism to HK! But they also provide HK PPL with high TAXES and steal money from hk ppl! they also messed up the economy B4 they left! I think you should look in the mirror and i hope you will see the CHINESE in you! If you like to be British that much then i think you should immigrate there!
lol Canadian? Who the hell said i was? LOL Americans are always messed up in the head! hahaaa.......Yes i have lived in Canada . But i have also lived in HK and Beijing for years....I was born in HK!!
The History of HK under Brits rule also remind me of a time where there were signs hung up in restaurants saying "Chinese and Dogs are not allowed to come in", so do you want to be that DOG? I DONT!
That's why I was surprised when they replaced the 1957 Star Ferry Pier in Central with a replica of the 1912 design. To me 1912 is representative of the period of "Chinese and dogs not allowed", whereas the 1950s and 60s signified a time of anti-colonialism.
Go and see the new Central Piers No. 7 & 8 - the colonialism you described is still well and truly alive in that comical design!
Ah, popoTb, I remember you, you vile little racial supremacist. Still leaving flame posts everywhere you can I see. I suppose you think this makes you a great hero of China? Are you till sending people silly threatening emails? I can see you pounding your keyboard with rage right now... Well, don't hurt yourself :)
After his speech, I still remember Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra played the Variation IX of Enigma Variations by Sir Edward Elgar, my eyes got wet while that piece of music ended. I am a local Hongkonger.
Allegiance to the Queen! Without the British, Hong Kong would have been another corrupted and uncilivized city in China. It proofs that Hong Kong hasn't advanced so much in the past 10 bitter years.
Notice Patton's reaction at the end, when NIMROD was played, music that has great meaning to the British. He gave everything he had to a free HK. It was not to be, but Patton gave his all.

(cont.)
lukebccb 11 months ago

(cont.)
lukebccb 11 months ago
Your less than infantile-intellectual development level may not understand the fact why there will be no flood of any massive refugees. You neither understand the saying of 'Das Boot ist voll' nor geopolitical interests and related bargaining. Give and take, that is what is less than infantile levels like you cannot understand-at least one deal has been reported to have been made. You have no say in any game anyway; that is the reality.

@xxwzaebd: But hey complicated facts are far too difficult for YOUR 12 year-old-intellectual development to comprehend and it's easier for someone of YOUR little child-level-intellectual development to sit and drool and masturbate to stupidity-causing rightwing froth on the radio than to have to think huh?
lukebccb 11 months ago
But the complicated facts are far too too too difficult for YOUR much less than 12-year old(in fact, a tiny minuscle diminutive fraction of that) intellectual development to comprehend and it is easieer for someone of YOUR little diminutive minuscle negligible less-than-child level intellectual development to sit, drool and do nothing productive while people like me and all others lead a productive and useful life. You=unuseful entity. Period.

That doesn't make sense. Beijing Olympics, like any Olympics, are dependent on international contractors.
It's not like the British have anything to prove either. They've got thousands of years of success stories behind them.
Also remember the British were once a Colony belonging to Italy , for over 500 years, and that never stopped them.

It could have ended worse. But (as I will argue) Hong Kong deserved better, deserved better of Britain. The way we in Britain have done things, the sort of people we have tried to be, tells us that bluntly. It was a sad way to go. And I fear that the people we left behind know it."
Christopher Patten

The Empire story of the most humane and well intentioned of the colonial powers, a story that at its best encompasses scholar-administrators who knew and loved the distant lands they goverened more than the country whose name they served, the dissemination across the tropical jungles and icy wastes of the impartial clemencies of the rule of law, the usually peaceful..."

8utterfly604 4 years ago
I do think that Christopher Patten does care a great deal about Hong Kong. I am writing a term paper on how HK has changed since 1997 and I would like to share with you all this quote from his book published in 1998.
Perhaps it explains why he looked heavy with emotions after his speech.
8utterfly604 4 years ago
@8utterfly604 You would do well to write a paper about how much Hong Kong has changed after Britain stole it from China during the Opium wars to the second world war. And than the period after the second world war to 2010. Britains "superb" rule of Hong Kong has left Hong Kong to become a 3rd world cesspool up and until WW2. So much for the smart british governance. If youre going to look at history, dont distort the facts or come to conclusions out of context.

And the Brits used HK as a jump point to traffic OPIUM into China back then!
popoTb 4 years ago
When you start saying how WHITE people are evil, that's racism. My point is that Great Britain has taken a almost non populated land a turn it into on of the best cities in the world. They didn't force 7 million people to immigrate to HK, people move to HK b/c of the good things the british has done. So that's not oppression when people go there by choice. I agree, the opium war was wrong by the Brits, that's history. But they have helped the local chinese post WWII tremendously. Peace.
tomkwc 4 years ago
I Never said that Whites were evil! Check the logs, did i say that? QUOTE IT THEN!
The Brits opened HK to international trade but it's the HARD working and Fast learing opportunistic HK people that made it successful. The brits just kicked back and collected their HIGH TAXES while HKers worked their ass off!
I agree, the opium war is history BUT so is the cul-revol!
popoTb 4 years ago
ok, perhaps I read u wrong. HK is ranked as the world's freest economy according to both Economic Freedom of the World and the Index of Economic Freedom.
tomkwc 4 years ago
LOl what about the 100% taxation for automobiles? Rank number 1 in the world! Buy 1 car in Hk is the price of 2 elsewhere! And the inflation in the house market before 97?thanks to the brits for that!
LOL the First time ever in the history of HK did the gov't not only lowered taxes but returned tax money to its citizens was right after the handover when the stock market crash in 1997!
popoTb 4 years ago
ONLY 100% tax? Be grateful you don't live in Singapore, where it's even higher, or Malaysia, where they put 300% duty on imported cars so everyone will buy Protons. I suspect that it's even higher in mainland China!

OH after reading this comment of yours again! A bell rang....LOL ..... u may NOt be a racist in America but HELL YA racism exist in the U.S! And you and i both know that! Have you heard about the "Jena 6"?? L.A Riots back in 1994? If you think racism dont exist in America...LOL...
popoTb 4 years ago
Racism exists everywhere, even in china. But my point is that for every 1 racist, there are 10 non racist people in this world. I focus on the good things of the US. My parents weren't forced to moved here by the US. My parents came to the US by the good grace of the American government. They were persecuted by China. I have been discriminated before, but I'm not going to hate all white people b/c of one fool. I rather focus on the good people.
tomkwc 4 years ago
I agree racism exist everywhere, and that there are more non-racist then racist! But that is not our debate topic!
I just want to show u the history and the cruel intentions behind the brits colonization of HK! And that there is nothing to thank the brits for because their initial intention was not to "save" HK or develop it!
They just saw Hk has a PORT/jump point to traffic opium!
popoTb 4 years ago
I agree the Brits committed a sin against the Chinese in the Opium war. No question about that. But for the sins committed by their Great Great Grand Fathers, the post WWII Brits has done far more good things for the local chinese. My family took advantage of that during some very bad times from China. I'm just trying to give credit to the Brits where it's due. I think China is heading toward the right direction now as well.
tomkwc 4 years ago 2
Credit to the brits?? I think it should be the other way around! the brits should thank and give credit to HK and its ppl! B/c HK has made them lots of money! But now its all over now for the brits, they dont control Hk no more! BYE BYE brits "GOD SAVE UR QUEEN"! SO long...Queen Elizabeth the II and farewell forever!
popoTb 4 years ago
Well, your point is clear:
Brits are evil. Chinese are good. Brits has done nothing for the good of HK people and they were oppressed and taken advantage of.
Have a good life. I'm done.
tomkwc 4 years ago
Dont PUT WORDS IN MY MOUTH! dont accuse me for what i have NOT SAID OR DONE! I didn't say brits are evil nor did i say Chinese are good!
And you have swore at me accused me for what i didnt say! So.....what des that make you?
All I am basically saying is the history behind the colonization of HK!
I dont HATE THE brits but i do have the right to criticize them!
So are you saying that China is always wrong and the brits are right to colonize HK!
popoTb 4 years ago

History? history shows that the Brits invaded China colonizing it!

The History of HK under Brits rule also remind me of a time where there were signs hung up in restaurants saying "Chinese and Dogs are not allowed to come in", so do you want to be that DOG? I DONT!
popoTb 4 years ago
