I think this is their greatest rock and roll recording. Just a little comment about why they sometimes messed up in their live performances. The truth is that the screaming was so loud in their live performances that none of them could hear what the other was singing and playing. That is actually why they stopped touring.
@gandolph7poet The screams certainly made it difficult, but the biggest reason was their lyrics. John hated lyrical repetition. He usually modified the phrasing to make each verse slightly different - which frequently tripped them up in the recording studio as well. Go listen to "This Boy" takes....very funny.
@myrtlebox I agree with you, but this night he just outright forgot the words to that verse.I love it,I can remember that night watching this like it was last week.
i love Johns little hop backwards at the end..oh hell, what isnt there to love about these boys..these guys will be in our hearts and in our ears forever...
I kinda started crying, because I realised that I'll never see them live... I knew that, of course, but, you have like this image of them in your mind looking like in this video, and then you watch this and think that you're watching it on a website and that 2 of them are dead and that this was 47 years ago.... oh god i'm gonna start crying again D:
It's amazing how frequently John screwed up the second verse to his own song - Help. He absolutely hated repetition, so he always put together subtle lyrical changes - which invariably tripped him up when he had to sing them live.
Is it my imagination, or did John cock the words up halfway through the song, and come in late at two minutes and seven seconds into the clip, (on the line: "I never needed anybody's help in any way"?)
haha i think that he says that at 0:20 because whenever they announce the song title the girls always scream.....and he wanted to see if they would still scream if he said some random noises in place of the song title =]
@2012Grizz - It wouldn't surprise me if he was doing it deliberately; maybe it was like an in-joke to his band mates, given that the screaming was always so loud most of the crowd wouldn't notice anyway if he flubbed a verse. That seems like John's sort of humor to put one over on the audience (notice he says some jibberish as he introduces the song) .
This is the best of all the Beatles live performances on the Ed Sullivan Show. I saw every Ed Sullivan Show they did, and this one rates No.1 in my book. The crowd workup was top notch and added much to the performance. The Beatles are the No.1 very best and Beatlemania was in full swing during this "Help!" song performance. Beatlemania is alive today in a quieter fashion.
yes! john sings the mono version live proof at 0:53 john sings AND now these days are gone in the modern stereo version produced by george martin john sings BUT now these days are gone look up help out of print film version and then listen to the one you all know and love john sings but now
they wrote the book did nt they. people overlook lennons rythym guitar playing but he just chugs away at the chords over harrisons lead lines totally flawless just a shame theres only 2 of them left alive
@2012Grizz i think that's just John being john...he just mumbles gibbirish at times in some songs...for example in don't let me down on the roof top...
@Alias166 These were druggie days--not LSD, but they were so high from grass at this point that they were practically bumping into the ceiling. "Help" and "Rubber Soul" were pot albums.
@mickeydavey egodeath, the website can offer a solid argument to that and the current wikipedia recording date of the song, falls nicely into the theory that this is John's first post LSD recording.
