thats awesome ...isn't it funny that they making engines that consumes more fuel then b4 fuel pricing went up..and alot of it don't have as much power as something that would have better mileage
What kind of things did you have to do to drop in this engine? I want to do the same thing pretty much but i have been having no luck trying to find info on this swap.
I've got a 99 2500 Ram with a weak 360 gasser. Thinking about a 4Bt swap. How hard was it to get your buddy's electronics to work, such as speedo, airbag, ABS, etc? I'd like to retain the stock trans if possible (46RE auto).
@ahhhhmann Im sorry, you want to put a cummins in a dakota? that engine would just tear the rear end of the truck from the torque and the weight of that engine would probably drop the front suspension after a month of driving haha
@gohomeimigrants well im not gonna be stupid and just drop a cummins in....im also doing a solid axle swap and a new rear end with a new driveshaft and trans.
i know, but here in brazil , ford mades the f-250 and the little trucks if cummins.we have 2. one with 3.9L eletronic 203 hp and 3.9L standart with 145 hp.
im wanting to do this. i want a 12v cause it would be easier to drop in, and id rather have a manual and 2wd. i have a 97 ram with a 360 magnum and its 4wd now, but in my mind, 4wd is just one more thing to break.
@adamslurch71 Well like it matters, but it fits, found a wrecked Frito truck and got the engine, god this thing is amazing in a 2800lbs car. and I finally have a 5th gear...lol
@adamslurch71 : It would probably easier for you to fit a OM617 ( mercedes 3l diesel engine turbo ) in your 240D .With 128 hp, lighter, easier to fit and more rpm. Actually doing 36 mpg with mine on highway.
@unimogman404 I thought about that but I was thinking of something that people don't see all the time, Make a nice unique car One that can run on veggie oil as well as pull hard and fast put the mountain roads by where I live. I'm not looking for great mileage in this car that's why I have another 240D thats already has a 617 swap done to it, as well as a 6-speed, 2.35 rear gears average about 42.2 on highway.
@trd1717 Nothing unique about that though. The Cummins 4bt and 4bt ISB were never put into production in pickups unlike the 6BT and 6BT ISB's that made it into the Ram 2500 and up. Secondly you see most of these swaps performed on 1/4 ton and 1/2 ton vehicles such as Jeeps and pickups that have never really had diesel options here in the US. The 4BT is sought after when it comes to fuel economy, even a 2500 with the 3.9L will get 28mpg stock versus the 25mpg that a 5.9L/6.7L can pull stock.
@ssi0300 He is a tard, he mistook a 5.9 in an 82 chevy for a 454 in another video. I don't think he even knows that diesel exists, much less that hemi's weren't offered in dodges in that body style.
nice ride..if you can emailm me at jabhs44@aol.com i have a few questions about the swap im ining about doing it and i was surious about things with the axles and suspension stuff like that
so i love my ram 1500 and i use it to pull a stock trailer so here is my problem it does great minus the gas milage, and i wanted to put the 5.9 24 valuve in it but it is to hard to come by and would cost about the same as another truck in just parts so the thing i would like to know is how extensive was the wire work and and what are and if any problems with the truck.
i want you opnion and would like to know how much something like this would coust Thank you
ok why?? i mean really that engine is the same size as our little case skidloader has...the only thing that truck has is fuel economy, i would have left the V8 in that truck cause you would get more power out of that
@ztank013 a good used 4bt depending on where u get it will cost you at least 2k. unless you can find a wrecked delivery truck and buy the whole thing cheaper
would any automatic transmission fit the 4bt or will I have to buy another tranny? I have a 1998 ram 1500 single cab lwb 4x4 with a 5.2, would it be worth changing to a 4bt or is my work cut out for me?
@SoCoMx309 Probably because he still had all the original axles and suspension. Not to mention he had a half ton frame which would had been twisted after a while had he used the 5.9. And, this is a far cheaper way to have a diesel powered half ton that gets 30+ mpg. But yeah, it is a great looking rig.
@Len013091 don't all 2nd gen rams use the same engine mounts? I mean the part that is permanently attached to the frame. If I you a 6bt from a ram I bet it would just bolt in, then all you would need is 2500 front springs and transmission that will hold up to the power.
well a 1/2 ton is gonna weigh less than a 3/4 ton so for one its gonna get better mileage, and the reduce in weight will make it quicker too. 1/2 ton diesels are a very innovative idea that the big three have been working on for some time now
yes sir they did. ford also had a perkins diesel in the rangers in the 80's and chevy luv's had a (?perkins?) diesel also.
but im talking about modern diesels, specifically made for 1/2 ton vehicles. sorry, but as much of a diesel fan as i am, i dont think much of the 5.7/6.2/6.5 chevy diesels. the 6.5 was alright but the other two in my opinion were halfway worthless.
theyre good engines, but they didnt compare to other diesels of the day such as the 5.9 cummins and 7.3 PSD.
Yeah the 6.2 and 6.5 were good engines, they were just supposed to be tough, fuel efficient work engines...and werent intended to compete in the power range of 6.9/7.3's or 5.9's. A 6.9 NA could beat a 6.5TD in a race...kinda sad. haha.
But I agree, it's a shame the economy dumped when it did otherwise we'd have 1/2 ton Powerstrokes out as we speak and 1/2 Cummins and Dmax's out in the next few months. Not to mention diesel RAV4's and CRV's this year.
It wasn't the economy that killed the smaller diesels, the mfg's were all set up to produce them, then our current president pushed harsher emissions regulations that wouldn't allow them.
Don't know where you heard that, but Ford and Dodge shelved 1/2ton diesel plans over a year ago, before Obama was even sworn in. And Tier 2 bin 5 emissions standards havent changed, mfg's have known they had to conform to these standards starting with 2009 model year. The EPA set out this plan at least 7-8 years ago. Chevy soon followed, realizing that its probably not a good idea to feed loads of money(they dont have) into making a new conforming diesel.
On May 19th, 2009 Obama announced that by 2016, all states must comply with California emissions regulations. Snip from one of the articles:
"This will force OEMs to clean up emissions by 30 percent by 2016, while preventing California from moving the goalposts again, say industry officials. The upshot? By 2016 car offerings must average 42mpg while trucks will face a 26.2mpg average requirement."
And we all know how easy it is to get a new diesel in Cal.
Well by May 19th, 2009 The Big Three had all already shelved plans for 2010 1/2ton diesels. The 1/2 ton diesels were expected to get around 25mpg...Not to mention that 2010 diesel wouldnt have to conform to 2016 standards, and they'd have 6 years to make trucks that got 26-27mpg. Just like they've had 6-7 years to get to the current emissions standards..everything before that got grandfathered in.
I'm not sure how the gov wants mfgs to get to the mpg stds while also meeting the emissions std too
@Reverseflush. Take that think for me, big inefficient government, progressive minded dildo your talking out of and stick it in your whiney hand out taking ass.
@Reverseflush Holy shit dude...is your page for real? Are you seriously that demented? Why are you even looking at these videos if your flower-child dopehead ass is into "water for fuel, hug a tree" retardanomics?
Go lick a root or something, and leave us to our own devices. We're really not hurting you, whether you believe that or not.
The real irony is that my Durango meets those numbers now, averaging 28mpg with ULSD (was 30 mpg pre-ULSD), which is roughly double what the original 5.9 got. Yet according to both the federal government and my own state's emissions laws, my swap is illegal. I'm lucky I have connections to get an inspection sticker.
And a P.S. to that- I use the 10k mile oil change interval the 4bt is commercially rated for, or 1 qt/1000 miles, half the oil the Durango uses for a 3k mile change. I also have no spark plugs, wires, and other tune-up components going into the trash. And when I do change my oil, I filter it and blend it with diesel and put it back into the fuel tank, so there is no liquid waste. I'm no tree hugger, but I can still be "green".
The 6.6 Duramax cost $11k on top of the base price for a 2500/3500 (Its similar cost for Ford and Dodge) due to new technology. Heavy-duty diesel pickups were not selling very well either so the big 3 realized people arent gonna shell out that much money on a 1/2ton truck during a recession...when their sales are already down huge percents. Nissan, Honda and Toyota had plans for diesel sedans and SUVs, but shelved them too until the recession is over.
The truck Dodge SHOULD have built. As for Ford ... Their head is SO far up their ass, what can you say? They 'developed' the Navstar as a big, heavy, fuel-gulping V-8 when a 6 or 4 would have been much smarter, they DO markey good diesel trucks in South America and Europe, use a Cummins in their 2 to 5 ton mid-to-heavy duty trucks but signed a marketting agreement not to use Cummins in their light trucks. Dicks. The US civilian diesel industry is 20 years retarded.
@starmanskye FYI the reason that there are alot of vehicles in central and south america with diesel engines in them (like the ford ranger, dodge dakota, etc...) is that the U.S. govt has much higher standards as to what can be sold in the U.S. The diesel engines down there in small vehicles are going to last 2 years at best and are less fuel efficient and not even manufactured by ford or dodge or whomever because they dont make shitty cheap engines just to be competetive in 3rd world markets.
@starmanskye These engines are in many cases Mitsubishi. yes even in the ford ranger. Very disappointing for Americans who are used to good quality diesels (generally). Also one of the reasons you can sell shitty products in other countries is... you really can't sue anyone either individually or class action so in you have less rights as a consumer, Anyhow just some food for thought from a German/American who lived in central and south america for a few years.
im thinkin about doin this to my 01 4x4 im tired of getting 10 mpg or less and have been wantin a diesel so bad...how hard was the swap? did you custom make your motor mounts? any advice would be great
a 12 v is the same a a 6bt a 4bt is just the four cylinder version so it is lighter smaller package and can fit into small places thats why it is such a common swap 4bt less horse power than 6bt but less expensive and like i said alot easier to fit into a small place so you dont have to do a lot of custom fabrication
how hard was the swap? and around how much did it cost? i have an 01 dodge 4x4 and i have been thinkin about takin the old 5.9 v8 out and swappin in one of these
On you truck, a 5.9L Cummins will fit nicely. The 5.9L Cummins would've fit into the truck in the video as well. Depending on the condition, a Cummins 4BT costs around 600-1200. Look in junkyards w/ lots of old bread delivery trucks. Or read up on DieselPowerMagazine for the latest postings on sales.
the old GM 6.3 was non turbo and the old ford 6.9 were non turbo driven both and they both go ok just not up hills well but shit better and pulling the load up hill by my back
The Cummins 4B was 85 HP and non turbo, the 4BT is 105 HP with a turbo and no intercooler, and the 4BTA is 120 HP with turbo + intercooler. The 4BT is a common Frito-Lay truck engine and usually sells for about $2000, I paid $1750 for mine from a truck salvage and get 28 MPG in a '79 F-250 with 10% used motor oil mixed with the fuel.
really pal? then where did the power come from? outer space? a diesel engine/motor relies on the TURBO to make it's power. other wise your making about 35-72 hp. not enough to run an 8,000lb truck.
hey mister know it all i have a 92 f350 4 door long bed 7.3 idi diesel which is what they had before the powerstroke and it is a non turbo diesel and i most defiantly don't have 35-72 hp so how about you get your facts straight before you start runnin your mouth about stuff you have no business talking about.....
no u need fuel and air and a ignition source i.e. compression to create combustion
turbos force more fuel AND air into the combustion chamber to make more power that would be why they have fuel compensator's on the injector pump to keep up with the amount of air flowing into the engine
DUDE thats sick i want to do the same thing in my f150 but im gettin rid of it and dont have the time money or know how to get it done but thats a bad ass truck man good job!!
thats awesome ...isn't it funny that they making engines that consumes more fuel then b4 fuel pricing went up..and alot of it don't have as much power as something that would have better mileage

how much fuel mileage are you getting now?

Would a 4bt fit in a 78 Toyota SR5 pickup without having to do a lot of work to fit it in?
StillenGtr17 2 years ago
@StillenGtr17 Maybe. 60 and 80 series Landcruisers require a 4 inch lift so the oil pan will fit.

where did you get the 4bt at

How did you attach the Transmission to the 4bt? V.

puttin a Cummins in a 1500 is just gay...just buy a 2500...whats the point
turbopens87 2 years ago
well a 1/2 ton is gonna weigh less than a 3/4 ton so for one its gonna get better mileage, and the reduce in weight will make it quicker too. 1/2 ton diesels are a very innovative idea that the big three have been working on for some time now
EasternAggie 2 years ago 2
@EasternAggie Chevrolet offered diesels in both their full size sedans and 1/2 ton trucks, throughout the 80's and early 90's. Wish they still did.
HughesReview 2 years ago
yes sir they did. ford also had a perkins diesel in the rangers in the 80's and chevy luv's had a (?perkins?) diesel also.
but im talking about modern diesels, specifically made for 1/2 ton vehicles. sorry, but as much of a diesel fan as i am, i dont think much of the 5.7/6.2/6.5 chevy diesels. the 6.5 was alright but the other two in my opinion were halfway worthless.
theyre good engines, but they didnt compare to other diesels of the day such as the 5.9 cummins and 7.3 PSD.
EasternAggie 2 years ago
Yeah the 6.2 and 6.5 were good engines, they were just supposed to be tough, fuel efficient work engines...and werent intended to compete in the power range of 6.9/7.3's or 5.9's. A 6.9 NA could beat a 6.5TD in a race...kinda sad. haha.
But I agree, it's a shame the economy dumped when it did otherwise we'd have 1/2 ton Powerstrokes out as we speak and 1/2 Cummins and Dmax's out in the next few months. Not to mention diesel RAV4's and CRV's this year.
saosurvive126 2 years ago 2
It wasn't the economy that killed the smaller diesels, the mfg's were all set up to produce them, then our current president pushed harsher emissions regulations that wouldn't allow them.
jaltonnh 1 year ago
Don't know where you heard that, but Ford and Dodge shelved 1/2ton diesel plans over a year ago, before Obama was even sworn in. And Tier 2 bin 5 emissions standards havent changed, mfg's have known they had to conform to these standards starting with 2009 model year. The EPA set out this plan at least 7-8 years ago. Chevy soon followed, realizing that its probably not a good idea to feed loads of money(they dont have) into making a new conforming diesel.
saosurvive126 1 year ago
On May 19th, 2009 Obama announced that by 2016, all states must comply with California emissions regulations. Snip from one of the articles:
"This will force OEMs to clean up emissions by 30 percent by 2016, while preventing California from moving the goalposts again, say industry officials. The upshot? By 2016 car offerings must average 42mpg while trucks will face a 26.2mpg average requirement."
And we all know how easy it is to get a new diesel in Cal.
jaltonnh 1 year ago
Well by May 19th, 2009 The Big Three had all already shelved plans for 2010 1/2ton diesels. The 1/2 ton diesels were expected to get around 25mpg...Not to mention that 2010 diesel wouldnt have to conform to 2016 standards, and they'd have 6 years to make trucks that got 26-27mpg. Just like they've had 6-7 years to get to the current emissions standards..everything before that got grandfathered in.
I'm not sure how the gov wants mfgs to get to the mpg stds while also meeting the emissions std too

@jaltonnh 26.2 mpg?....I"m luck if I get half that lol.....Fuck That! I'm not giving up my shitty gas mileage truck!!!
99dodgeram360 1 year ago
The real irony is that my Durango meets those numbers now, averaging 28mpg with ULSD (was 30 mpg pre-ULSD), which is roughly double what the original 5.9 got. Yet according to both the federal government and my own state's emissions laws, my swap is illegal. I'm lucky I have connections to get an inspection sticker.
jaltonnh 1 year ago
And a P.S. to that- I use the 10k mile oil change interval the 4bt is commercially rated for, or 1 qt/1000 miles, half the oil the Durango uses for a 3k mile change. I also have no spark plugs, wires, and other tune-up components going into the trash. And when I do change my oil, I filter it and blend it with diesel and put it back into the fuel tank, so there is no liquid waste. I'm no tree hugger, but I can still be "green".
jaltonnh 1 year ago
The 6.6 Duramax cost $11k on top of the base price for a 2500/3500 (Its similar cost for Ford and Dodge) due to new technology. Heavy-duty diesel pickups were not selling very well either so the big 3 realized people arent gonna shell out that much money on a 1/2ton truck during a recession...when their sales are already down huge percents. Nissan, Honda and Toyota had plans for diesel sedans and SUVs, but shelved them too until the recession is over.
saosurvive126 1 year ago
the only thing beyween 6.2 and 6.5 is the bore and 6.5 had factory turbo
50sChevyKING 1 year ago
The Ford Ranger diesels were made by Mitsubishi...the same engine used in Mitsubishi and Dodge D-50 pickups. Nice little diesel.
jaltonnh 1 year ago
@ EasternAggie yes the 82-84 Rangers (And i think Mazda B-series) had the 2.2 Perkins (Mazda) N/A diesel. 85-87 Used the Mitsubishi 2.3l turbodiesel.
The 83-85 Dodge D50/Mitsubishi Mighty Max had the same 2.3 TD as the Ranger.
The Chevy LUV had an Isuzu 2.2l N/A diesel.
The S-10's I believe had the same 2.2 Isuzu N/A diesel.

This would have sold well. A lot better truck than say a 6.2 powered Chev half ton. Looks like a fun rig.
rallyKia 2 years ago
The truck Dodge SHOULD have built. As for Ford ... Their head is SO far up their ass, what can you say? They 'developed' the Navstar as a big, heavy, fuel-gulping V-8 when a 6 or 4 would have been much smarter, they DO markey good diesel trucks in South America and Europe, use a Cummins in their 2 to 5 ton mid-to-heavy duty trucks but signed a marketting agreement not to use Cummins in their light trucks. Dicks. The US civilian diesel industry is 20 years retarded.
starmanskye 2 years ago 23
@starmanskye you are so right :)
iCummins03 1 year ago
@starmanskye FYI the reason that there are alot of vehicles in central and south america with diesel engines in them (like the ford ranger, dodge dakota, etc...) is that the U.S. govt has much higher standards as to what can be sold in the U.S. The diesel engines down there in small vehicles are going to last 2 years at best and are less fuel efficient and not even manufactured by ford or dodge or whomever because they dont make shitty cheap engines just to be competetive in 3rd world markets.
hkhuhn 1 year ago
@starmanskye These engines are in many cases Mitsubishi. yes even in the ford ranger. Very disappointing for Americans who are used to good quality diesels (generally). Also one of the reasons you can sell shitty products in other countries is... you really can't sue anyone either individually or class action so in you have less rights as a consumer, Anyhow just some food for thought from a German/American who lived in central and south america for a few years.

what is a 4bt cummins like what are the differences between it and a 12 valve , and what are the pros and con of both these motors thanx ...
braxxtonn 2 years ago
a 12 v is the same a a 6bt a 4bt is just the four cylinder version so it is lighter smaller package and can fit into small places thats why it is such a common swap 4bt less horse power than 6bt but less expensive and like i said alot easier to fit into a small place so you dont have to do a lot of custom fabrication
weeman516 2 years ago 3
how long did it take you guys to convert it?
p81191 2 years ago
how hard was the swap? and around how much did it cost? i have an 01 dodge 4x4 and i have been thinkin about takin the old 5.9 v8 out and swappin in one of these
Y0uTUB3R0CKS 2 years ago
On you truck, a 5.9L Cummins will fit nicely. The 5.9L Cummins would've fit into the truck in the video as well. Depending on the condition, a Cummins 4BT costs around 600-1200. Look in junkyards w/ lots of old bread delivery trucks. Or read up on DieselPowerMagazine for the latest postings on sales.
mastermusicman24 2 years ago
the old GM 6.3 was non turbo and the old ford 6.9 were non turbo driven both and they both go ok just not up hills well but shit better and pulling the load up hill by my back
usaskiteam993 2 years ago
What do you put behind that? Run a 5.9 flywheel and housing and bolt up the tranny that goes with the 5.9?
CommadoreNX 2 years ago
The Cummins 4B was 85 HP and non turbo, the 4BT is 105 HP with a turbo and no intercooler, and the 4BTA is 120 HP with turbo + intercooler. The 4BT is a common Frito-Lay truck engine and usually sells for about $2000, I paid $1750 for mine from a truck salvage and get 28 MPG in a '79 F-250 with 10% used motor oil mixed with the fuel.

no i'm pretty sure not all 6.9 fords arent. Ya fool..
BigMacDiesel123 2 years ago
really pal? then where did the power come from? outer space? a diesel engine/motor relies on the TURBO to make it's power. other wise your making about 35-72 hp. not enough to run an 8,000lb truck.
anonymous11228 2 years ago
hey mister know it all i have a 92 f350 4 door long bed 7.3 idi diesel which is what they had before the powerstroke and it is a non turbo diesel and i most defiantly don't have 35-72 hp so how about you get your facts straight before you start runnin your mouth about stuff you have no business talking about.....
ltw7324 2 years ago 3
Go to school, There wernt turbos on most over the road trucks until the late 70s. Its all fuel in a diesel, air only helps
orbitofdoom16 2 years ago
no u need fuel and air and a ignition source i.e. compression to create combustion
turbos force more fuel AND air into the combustion chamber to make more power that would be why they have fuel compensator's on the injector pump to keep up with the amount of air flowing into the engine
