Nirvana and Mudhoney were Punk bands. And played whatever they wanted. Bleach is pretty Metal, Nevermind something like Pop Punk. In Utero pretty Indie / Punk. This is like Garage Rock song. Pearl Jam Hard Rock. AiC Hard Rock / Alt. Metal. Soundgarden also. If Grunge meant something musically, i think slow song like Black Hole Sun, Heart Shpd Box, Down in A Hole.
