  • damn i with this was on itunes

  • there will l always be a gap between generations , and this is proof of it , i thought this was a joke ... start hearing music & figure out how to stop just listening to it

  • So Soothing,And Comforting Yet It Has That Haunting Edge.I Have Goosebumps(:

  • They killed it IMO

  • @luyben12 Tit.

  • Where's the fucking rest of it?

  • Superstar is a Leon Russell song...The Carpenter's version was a cover as well

  • mmmmmmmmmmmm

  • Sonic Youth also has a great original song about Karen Carpenter called; "Tunic (Song for Karen)"

    Very haunting as well.

"And I remember mom what you said, you said honey, you look so under fed."

  • A Great song by the Carpenters ,,but sonic youth sing this song amazing...very good cover..

  • A Great song by the Carpenters ,,but sonic youth sing this song amazing...

  • @biskitlee yes he can!!!

  • Juno - lame. Try High Tension.

  • @dvader7272

    ....

    I watched the trailer. Terrible.

  • I know The Carpenters made this song famous, but they didn't write it...Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett did.

  • @mellemel1970: Very true. People were exposed to this song when Rita Coolidge sang it on the "Mad Dogs And Englishmen" album by Joe Cocker, then The Carpenters covered it and made it a national hit.

  • :D ahhhh love this song! THANKS JUNO!

  • Such a melancholy song. Who knew the Carpenters had darkness to there writing. The speaker of the song is so isolated, delusional and lonely.

  • @mikey42 Is this song about a deranged fan?

  • @titostacos no its not!!!

  • yeah...thanks juno! I've heard it before but never found it!!!

  • why did you cut it short?

  • Flippin awesome switch up!!

  • They took this song so a whoooole new level.

  • amazzzing song!

  • just great.

  • "Superstar" is a 1969 song written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell not the Carpenters.

  • @Gizardofmars 'doesn't get it....'

  • kim does play drums

  • better than the original

    man they're amazing

  • not only is this song to die for, but kim's dress is amazing....

  • @thenifeelnothing She looks damn good.

  • i think that this song is one of their best! I love sonic youth.

  • touching.

  • I die and go to heaven every time I hear this song.

  • Probably the best cover of all-time....in my opinion, Very haunting.

  • song is hot.

  • Comment removed

  • song for karen.

  • LOL

  • and?

  • and nothing the fucking song was in the movie and there was no need to ask and ? like a moron....

  • I love them in this song better then the original, the original was good ,but this is GREAT!!!

  • MMMººº so hot!º

  • Amazing,. No too keen on the abrupt ending tho!

  • I love this tune it is so good.

  • Brilliant cover. The Youth hit the spot on this. Mournful and brilliant.

  • @marmiteboy99 Brilliant cover....Really?? Brilliant Cover?!?! You're an ass! You should be banned from listening to the original ever again!

  • Nice to see yet another band paying tribute, Karen would smile

  • sooo special - i love this

  • oops i clicked 1 star :{{

  • I love this version!

  • i first heard this during the movie juno, i've loved it ever since

  • saaaammme,

    my favourite song :)

  • lol 1:51

  • Form what Album is that song?

    I love it!

  • 'If I Were A Carpenter'

  • This song will never be the same to me.

    its sad and true :L:L:L:L

  • Amen to that brother.

  • At least they're keeping the Carpenters' music alive... I prefer the original but this was the first version I heard and it made me go out and buy a Carpenters CD

    :]

  • is that bill gates on the drums .... 1.28... lol

  • Business at the speed of Sonic Youth

  • lol i always thought that will the glasses he looked like a cross between gill gates and harry potter

  • the original is boring to me, that's it.

  • why doesnt it play the whole song?

  • I Only Know This Song Because Its In Juno ... Amazing Song Tho i Must Say :O

  • haha same here!

  • ditto lol

  • I remember driving past the Carpenters home in Downey when Karen died. There was a grip of police and repoerters. I was just a kid. I thought to myself, this person must have been bigger that the Osmonds.

  • haha sure... so why is sonic youth always shooting videos in southern ca.. like the desert , downey and im sure theres a few other locations ... i dunno watching this made me think of that

  • This is a genius cover. Who knew The Carpenters could sound dark and sexy?

  • i like...have a soft spot for sonic youth

  • This cover shows that only Karen Carpenter can sing this song well. In fact, this guy knows it too....that's why he's whispering instead of singing the song. He simply can't do it!

  • i like his ginger hair

  • the version of this song makes me want to run a razor across my wrists

  • i think this is an amazing cover, i think the lead singer re-created it perfectly

  • thurston moore is true love!

  • Can someone please explain to me the reasoning behind the bands infatuation with Karen Carpenter. It seems to be reoccuring theme they touch upon on each album pretty much.

  • Sonic Youth are infatuated with a lot of people, Madonna being another one. They are just weird people in that way (not saying that in a bad way).

  • i love how they can turn a carpenters song to a sonic youth song without even trying. truly an original band.

  • love this song...alot

    lol

  • have to disagree subsamadhi, Karen Carpenter was recognized AS A REMARKABLE SINGER...anyone who knows "voices" in the music business has stated she is the closest to perfection you will get...I've heard numerous people in the business say this...

  • I have to say...I love, love The Carpenters!

I love their version of Superstar, but I really like this version too---I really enjoy it also!

  • you mispelt cunt, just to let you know.i bet thats a little embarrasing.

  • reply to therightfullking:

and you look lyk ur mom on crack in a fatsuit so i'd shut the fukk up yuh dirty skank because if you dont lyk the fkn song yuh dont gotta fkn listen to it!!!

  • What a mongaloid! Did your parents have to type that comment for you as you can't reach the keyboard in your Steven Hawkings chair? Bless you - a gifted retard.

  • that made me LOL

  • damn, you suck.

  • They do it better than the Carpenters.

  • hardly.

  • Agreed.

  • Haha, half of the people replying don't even know who Sonic MOTHER FUCKING Youth is! If you guys only knew how influential this band was to so many other bands.

  • uh, yeah we do. see, some of us aren't kids and we remember them from back in the day. they are bunch of rich kids that can afford to sit around and make noise because they don't actually have to produce records with decent songs on them.

  • I think it is an interesting take on the song, but the lead singer can't quite pull it off.

  • This is solid gold donkey shit

  • just great in every way

  • i really do like this song.....

    it is so haunting.

  • lame. it is sad when it sounds cooler then it is good. But that pretty much sums up sonic youth's whole career.

  • they're covering a flat 70's mellow gold hit. I think that is as far a stretch for their sound as it gets. It still sounds good.

  • a flat 70's mellow gold hit? (sigh) connoisseurs of fine vocalists often rank karen carpenter in the top for her amazing tone quality and incredible control. her voice sounds like butter. and in all her years of touring AND playing drums, never did she sing a flat or sharp note. no, doing a carpenters cover of a burt bachrach song is risky, but they didn't even come close to doing it justice.

  • Don't get me wrong. I really like the song myself. I was just calling it what it is. Though I highly doubt "connoisseurs of fine vocalists rank karen carpenter in the top for her vocal quality". She was a good singer, but by no means remarkable. By the way, Sonic Youth covers aren't about doing a song justice. You miss the point entirely.

  • my mother, who loved the carpenters, admitted to me after me playin this song to her.. she said, yea, she didnt really know how to sing. i do like this cover though.

  • actually, those in the business considered Karen to be an exceptional singer. she was easy to record and never sang flat or sharp. i hate to break it to ya, but your ma didn't know what she was talking about. just saying...

  • (It's not a Burt Bacharach song, It was written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Sheridan)

  • the arrangement is by burt bacharach! hello!

  • The only thing good about this cover is that it was on the movie "The Frighteners". And it was friggin hilarious... fitted with that balding freak guy perfectly when he was being screamed at by the woman, thus turning the radio on frantically lol.

  • I like old Sonic Youth ('82- '88), but this kind of ironic/clever/hip/wacky/white rendition music makes me weep tears of boredom...

  • Karen needed to eat more food.

  • i didnt even now about this song til i heard it on juno

  • lol me too!!!

  • me too =))

  • damn is every great song ever produced on that soundtrack?

  • very talented!! i actually never heard this i adore the rendition it's edge and different... thanks for sharing it with me

  • It's so beautiful. It makes me want to cry.

  • love this version. carpenters version has such haunting vocals tho. this video is amazing with the footage of her. brings whole new meaning.

  • this video IF COMPARED to carpenters is shit. Sonic Youth blatantly used effects for their cover and frankly i hated it. period.

Lets bring them back to the 70s where technology wasn't that advanced and see how they'll fare next to The Carpenters. :)

  • haha...your a little dumb...most effects used by sonc youth were made IN the 70s...or atleast their varients orginated....wow...

  • I like alot of what this band does, but he's off key on alot of notes on this song.

  • True. He´s all over the place. Thurston Moore can´t sing for shit.

  • Can't tell if he is, but he sings with such passion and melancoly that i couldn't care less.

  • Stounbjerg, the truly great singers have the whole package. They perfected the craft. Otherwise you lower the standard.Check out Eva Cassidy's "over the rainbow" she died of cancer a bunch of years back. The live cut on U-tube was done when she new she was dying. That's "passion and melancholy" only with a voice only her and Karen Carpenter possessed. She never got a dime. Today it's alot of cosmetics and attitude and love of money but without true talent. They should be poets not singers.

  • I don't get it. Are you saying SY is a band about money and fame? Because then I would strongly disagree. I'm not saying Karen sings without passion and melancholy, but the sound is just too clean for me. In that way I prefer SY's version and music in general. I haven't listened to "Eva Cassidy", but the most passionate singer i can think of would be Ian Curtis (if you count it as worthy thing to mentioned: he surely knew as well that his life wasn't going in the right direction with his illness

  • No not at all, as I said in my first comment, I like alot of what the band does. But they're not great singers. Some of the songs are very monotone. And you just can't compare a voice like Carpenters to that. But everything has it's own time. And that time period was about real "Singers". The past couple decades it's more about "statement' etc.

  • Good call on Ian Curtis. The only person I ever saw with more passion was Mark Eitzel heading American Music Club back in 1992.

  • i prefer tunic

  • this isn't even close to the best sonic youth song, let alone better than the original. but if it prompts some stupid kids to check out "Death Valley 69" or "Confusion is Sex", then awesome!

  • blah blah blah juno hasnt any one of you heard of sonic youth before the stupid movie, i cant believe it

  • i heard of sonic youth years before juno.

  • You'd have to be at least in your LATE 20's to truely know who they where.

  • honestly anyone who said sonic youth did a better version are just plain stupid, i think it was great they were carpenter fans and decided to cover this song but to say that its better than Karen? thats crazy, just a bunch of dumb hipsters who saw juno and think the version is better v_v

  • didnt saw juno. still think this ones better. sorry.

  • this song was actually in the movie the frightners too so when i saw juno and heard it again i was glad that people started to pick up on how awesome it is.

  • me too, i didn't saw juno and i think this one is greater than the original. sorry[2]

  • Same as me...i have yet to see juno but i think this version is better!

  • What an ignorant attitude. I've never seen the film Juno. This version is just better IMO because it is more passionate and melancolic than the original song. It is more raw. But of course if you like a more clean sound that's fine.

  • wah wah i think its great sonic youth admired karen but this cover doesnt hold a candle to the original and im pretty sure they know that too, and if by "melancholic" you mean horrible sounding with just plain horrible singing then yes i prefer something cleaner and overall more beautiful

  • I agree, this cover is fine but has nothing on the original.

  • I like this one better.

    Totally agree with Stounbjerg

  • this is one of the most hauntingly beautiful love songs ever written and SY s cover just makes it even more heart breaking. first heard it from my first love when i was seventeen and now im nearly 31 and breaking up with my partner of 1i years. still kills me every time. real songs should make you feel summat. and this is just right.

  • For some reason, the singer reminds me of Cillian Murphy.. and this song seems like it'd fit right in with his movie, Red Eye.

    I loooove it.

  • ARH SHIT... HE DOES TOO

  • Someone left his cake out in the rain!

  • lol

  • Thanks Juno for this! kinda reminds me of Donovan

  • @lasfinisimas

Yup, thanks Juno. i'd have never heard this song if it weren't for that movie.
