The phrase "buffalo soldier" was in fact given to them by Indians but it was because of their use of buffalo hides to keep them warm in thwe winter campaigns. Many blacks joined up to prove themselves and to potentially better there status in the "white" majority that is the U.S. They often had to fight Natives in the frontier but sometimes they had protect them and were the first park rangers. Buffalo soldiers participated in many of the U.S. imperial causes like Spanish American war, Phillipine war, and WW1. Racism was very prevalent but the fought with valor during these hard times and should be proud.

But I prefer to read about social or political movement rather than military since social and political is about passion rather than military is more about an obligation. The phrase "buffalo soldier" was in fact given to them by Indians but it was because of their use of buffalo hides to keep them warm in thwe winter campaigns. The bufalo hides/overcoats and their dark skin was what coined the term. There is no doubt the Indians respected buffalos but I suspect the term was given in the same "affection" as "Charly" to the Viet Cong in Viet Nam.

No,the 54th was a Civil War regiment. Buffalo Soldier were units that were stationed in the west after the civil war. The term Buffalo Soldier was a term given by the Indians. In a way i suppose the 54th could be called Buff,. Soldiers because they were the first all blck regiment.

The REAL reason the Indians called them buffalo soldiers was because of the soldiers dark skin and thick curly hair which to them resembled a buffalo. It WASN'T an insult,yet so many revisionists take it as such. Why not just say it? I'm sure most black people who learn that fact won't get upset.
