  • does any body know what is 250 mhz to 500 mhz?

  • 16-42 Mcs tends to be bad on these rigs. I used to have a Super Defiant and I have a Sky Champion (S-20R) and they are deaf on these bands.

  • Sheer Balderdash!

The Super Defiant with two TRF stages is capable of fine performance all the way through ten meters. The problem you've experienced is very likely due to poor alignment, as well as severely diminished rf coil Q due to years of slow absorption of local humidity by the coil forms, making them lossy at high frequencies. The cure is to slow-roast them in a low temp oven, or to boil them in liquified parafin.

  • Also, the 4x6 Quam speaker bolted inside the cabinet does nothing to show the fine fidelity that this reciever is capable of with it's PP 6F6 audio output stage. Use a good quality external speaker for a truly satisfying listening experience.

One must make allowances for the Catman. Both his hearing and judgement have been adversely affected through years of loud verbal abuse by overbearing, cigar smoking, military officers.

  • Hrrrmphffff!!!! Perhaps to some ultra refined audiophilodial! I deftly assure you the conditions you describe have been inflicted without prejudice upon this specimen of arcane and ancient set of apparati. Nary an scant improvement has been gleaned from this crude procedure as you entreat. I will continue to pursue other avenues in a dire attempt to uprate the present equipage. And sir, your description of military officers is somewhat unbecoming (albeit sometimes truthful).

  • Very nice demo. This is one of those sets that has a much higher drool quotientin person. Put the matching PM-23 speaker with it and you may just be able to live without the fabled SX-28.

  • Maybe...but that triple main tuning/bandspread/meter combo with the "quartermaster" style tuning knobs still has my heart set on the SX-28.

  • Thanks, good to learn what those old rigs can do, very impressive!

  • Nice receiver, and excellent demonstration, not many of these radios available over here,Best Wishes from Southern Scotland

  • Superb! I just bought a S-40A, no comparison I know, but I am very excited to start working on it. This is very inspiring, Thank you.

  • Very interesting! The one station was giving a web address and this coming over a 50 year old receiver! The boys at Hallicrafters would never have dreamed of the internet. I still have an old HT-40 xtal controlled transmitter. 73's de WN3CWW

  • refurbed one of these - sans paint -for a fellow... Still have a Hammarlund SuperPro and a couple R-390 to do.

Real radios glow in the dark. ^__^

  • Thanks...listeners of the 40's and 50's must have worked out often...these beasts are heavy, but they do sound good.

  • Beautiful radio. I have several Hallicrafters rigs, but none look as good as this one. 73.

  • i love the old rig's
