I agree with the majority of the opinions here and feel that U2's best stuff far surpasses anything Coldplay has ever released. The only Coldplay album I ever enjoyed was Parachutes . And as far as Radiohead is concerned I would place them above U2 pretty easily. I don't mean this in a disrespectful way, but its just in my opinion I prefer Radiohead's best stuff over U2's best.

Music should never be a competition. What is "good" or not is relative and subjective. Both U2 and Coldplay have proven themselves by how many people are touched and influenced by their music. "Gone" by U2 is definitely great, but "Violet Hill" speaks more to me, personally. That doesn't mean I think Coldplay are "better." They're two different bands and I love them both for different reasons. I don't need to criticize one band to elevate another. Why would you want to do that?

But, I have to vote for U2 here, just based on these two songs. As much as I do enjoy Coldplay their lyrics are essentially vague to the point of being gibberish posing as meaningful. But lyrically, U2 is pretty much always something with a point.
And the other problem with Coldplay is that they were pushed into making X & Y a copy of Rush of Blood. It wasn't until Viva La Vida that we saw Coldplay move into more edgy and original territory, rather than just u2 wannabes.
I just can't stand Bono's voice, it just bores me. To me, Chris Martin's voice is just miles better. For that reason I'll always prefer Coldplay even if they were influenced by U2

U2's early stuff up until Zooropa was great, but they should have honestly called it quits years ago and have now ruined their legacy by catering to soccer moms.

U2 were an amazing band... Up till the early 90s they were invincible.. And "All That You Cant Leave Behind" was also great... But they seem to have lost it when they released crap like "How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" and "No Line on the Horizon".. WTF?? What the fuck happened to The Edge? His riffs suck now?? Why not? How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb was just a fucked up version of The Joshua Tree!! Just look at that song "City of Blinding Lights", it is just a fucking watered down version of "Where The Streets Have No Name" (my favourite U2 song).. The only good song from this album is "Vertigo"

Music should never be a competition. What is "good" or not is relative and subjective. Both U2 and Coldplay have proven themselves by how many people are touched and influenced by their music. "Gone" by U2 is definitely great, but "Violet Hill" speaks more to me, personally. That doesn't mean I think Coldplay are "better." They're two different bands and I love them both for different reasons. I don't need to criticize one band to elevate another. Why would you want to do that?

I like both.
But, I have to vote for U2 here, just based on these two songs. As much as I do enjoy Coldplay their lyrics are essentially vague to the point of being gibberish posing as meaningful. But lyrically, U2 is pretty much always something with a point.
And the other problem with Coldplay is that they were pushed into making X & Y a copy of Rush of Blood. It wasn't until Viva La Vida that we saw Coldplay move into more edgy and original territory, rather than just u2 wannabes.
