An excellent interview, Martin truly is a great guy. Very much based in the "we are all human" idea, which just makes him better in my view. Long may he write!
Apparently, when GRRM finished ASoIaF and the Dunk and Egg novellas, I heard he wants to write a story or a series about Aegon IV the Unworthy, where he thinks he's the hero, but the reader knows he's really just a douchebag.
Wow people the guy's a human being and your rooting for him to finish A BOOK before he dies. That's terrible, you who said that should be ashamed of yourselves.
I really like him for his books that he wrote. He destroyed everything in ''feast for crows'' and ''dance with dragons'' This is too long and anything new from this we do not. I think the old man wanted to make money more than he should and that is why it stalled. Immediately after Tolkien he is the best writer. I Hope that he will end'' Songs of Ice and Fire'' before he dies. Greetings from poland :)
Some people do writing as a job or a career but for others writing isnt a job it's a complete lifestyle, a lifestyles in which the indulge themselves in and it is those writers that make the greatest of stories
I know people want him to finish the series before he dies (God forbid that's any time soon) but he's a professional writer and him being unhealthy is most likely because he writes all the time. So I wouldn't worry.
Excellent view on narration- I intend to quote it in my seminar this week! I really wish english lecturers took the fantasy genre more seriously =/ this guy is brilliant.
I liked the first question the best. I find out about Game of Thrones TV series through other friends and family. The TV series then inspired me to read the books. There is really no substitute for good word of mouth. Excellent interview of GRRM.
@heroicndashing While it is a terrible thing to consider, these things do happen. It happened with David Gemmell while he was half way through the third book in his Troy series. I believe his wife finished it off. What I worry about is; how can he finish this story? I can't imagine a scenario where everyone's story will end unless a meteor hits Westeros, or something :P.
@heroicndashing Why is that horrible, the guy is obviously not a bastion of good health, and he got burned out and took a few years off from working on these all together. Additionally a lot of people are concerned he has written himself into a situation where all the different story lines and characters have blossomed into to many separate story lines with to many characters and details such that he wont be able to successfully bring things back together even if he lives another 40 years.
@TheLawbot lets take it easy now. I think George RR Martin should totally take his time. ASOIAF is great series and should not be rushed. George RR Martin is not mnay other writers who bring out a book every 2 years or so to make money. This series is definently going down in history as one of the greatest.
So i will happily wait for the next book, and its a good thing he doesn't really allow his fans to affect his writing.
@balaalalaslk I just hope he doesn't die before he finishes the series (I don't want him to die at all for that matter). I've heard from my little birds that he isn't in the best of health. Probably just a rumor though.
Perhaps he should write more things parallel, or alternately. He doesn't write all time anyway, so he can alternate a bit to take his mind to other things that work better at the moment. I also find that I read more extensively when I don't just read one book at a time, but have several to choose from. But that is not just a charitable advice, it would simply be interesting to have something fresh from him, I would say (SoIaF has become in part an obligation rather than the definite thing).
@Zulithe the only spoiler to book five is "nothing really happens and if you got it when it first came out you'd just spent 30 bucks on a paperweight." I've decided to give up on ASOIAF and instead read the old wildcard series. with their pissed off dwarf. gold clad judas, tons of hookers, pages spent talking about food. Basically it's ASOIAF with momentum and super heroes.
You had dozens and dozens and dozens of questions to choose from and yet you chose the worst possible questions. It might not be all your fault they were facebook questions after all, next time skip facebook and go straight to reddit please.

Stop being the TV exec and finish the books. NOW.
Which is more important? TV show? or the text it is based on?
Very nice, solemn man you are George, but really, pull it together and WRITE!
I have invested far too much life/time into reading and watching snippets and kernels of fantasy corporatism.
