  • You look to be in your early to mid 20s. That is good to see someone as young driving a school bus. Ive considered being a bus driver. Ive leaned towards Motorcoach but many companies require a CDL and at least 1 year bus driving experience and the transit authority I would be interested in working for starts everyone off part time. So I may or may not work as a school bus driver for at least a year or so. Or even a college shuttle.

  • This is the DT466 with the Allison AT-545. There's another video he put of this bus, driving it. It sounds really nice.

  • Thats definitely a DT360..no glow plugs..and being a 1990 its not a DTA360.

  • hey my old bus did that it was a 1990 bluebird navistar (international tobe correct no glow plugs but now we have a 2005 bluebird vision it is better it has glowplugs and a green wait to start light it starts better you would love it the light goes off fast quick glow plugs

  • that is not good on the engine of what you are doing you should plug it up more in the cold and would you rather have that bus or a thomas c2 or ic ce 300

  • If I had to pick between those 2 I would pick the IC CE 300 but the bus I would really like to have is a Blue Bird Vision.

  • @arcofadiver1 if i also had to pick i would pick the CE-300 only because the one i ride will start with no hesitation without being plugged in at single digits i dont know how well it would start below zero though because it hasnt got that cold where i live

  • Just a little tip from a canadian school bus driver who has become accustomed to cold starts. Warm up the glow plugs befor trying to start the bus. Turn the key and wait for the light to go out like you usually do. instead of then trying to start the bus, turn the key off, wait about 5 sec, and then turn the key and wait for the start light to go out again. repeat this 4 or 5 times and then try starting the bus.

  • This bus actually doesn't have a "wait to start" light, so I never know when the glow plugs are ready. I usually turn the key and leave it for about 10 seconds before starting. I will definitely try what you suggested though. Thanks for the tip!

  • That bus sounds like it has the DT466 under the hood. International DT engines have no glow plugs. Turning the key to "on" and leaving it for 10 seconds does absolutely nothing. Just turn the key and crank! The newer DT engines have intake heaters, and a wait to start light. But something that old has neither an intake heater nor glow plugs.

  • Well thanks for pointing that out. That makes sense. Everyone has been giving me a hard time for not letting the glow plugs run. I guess that just shows how much people know about school buses. Haha!

  • @arcofadiver1 I  see. I never see "Wait to start" lights on dt's either but i just personally act as if it does have glow plugs just to stay in the habit. If it wasnt an international bus, i would've thought it was a CAT motor, as when it finally started, from 1:10 to 1:20, it was PURRIN!!! (lol) Happy driving!!

  • @arcofadiver1 Sounds like a DT360. That doesn't have glow plugs either. None of the DTs do.

  • @booger289 That works! my moms a bus driver in NH and our old buses would never start (they were blue birds and by the first year 6 of them out of 20 needed new engines and a couple needed new electcal) But someone told her frined to start doing that and the bus started right up like it was 60 degress out side, even tho it was -16 so now we know that this is a valid tip to have while starting cold diesel engines!

  • No, the new ones are just as crappy. We are switching out whole fleet currently which consists of over 100 GMC Bluebird Gas buses with these Internationals... Internationational perminently has 4 loaners out to us because they have like 5 of the new buses for blown turbo's, injectors etc.... Just isnt like having a good 'ol gasser bus... you didnt have to worry about fuel gelling up in the winter

  • Is gas more economical than diesel?

  • No that's why the government has mandated that all school buses be switched to diesel. I forget the effective date but, that's why bluebird no longer produces buses with the GMC fronts. I think they get around 4-6 mpgs if im not mistaking. THe gas ones that is. Not sure about our diesels... Though I know in the winter time, specially the temps we've seen around Northern Illinois lately, have had a large impact on our diesel fleet.

  • The new international buses are nice. The old ones are ok.

  • Wow that bus needs a tune up. Make sure you check your block heater when you plug it in. You should hear a tiny buzzing noise.  How cold was it I started my vehicle in -49 C.

  • are all intenational school buses 7.3 or do some have 6.0

  • some have the 6.0 some of the conventional buses we have ar 6. while some of the others are the dt466. our rear engine buses are the 7.3

  • Doesn't appear that the block heater is working. You should trace the cord to the heater and feel if its hot or not.

  • She sounds a little sick. A tune up may be a good idea... My bus is a 89 Chevy with an 8.2 Detroit and it doesn't start that rough.

  • wow its pluged in and it stats like that , it needs a tune up , like i said before my neighbour has a school bus and he plugs it in when its -20 thats it , it starts right up everyday , a lil rough but first key turn
