The sex obsession is everywhere in our culture, so if you own a TV and your children go to school, then they already have a skewed view of sexuality. Only telling them not to have sex doesn't prevent them from experimenting with it. Strongly discourage it but give them the info they need, so that if they get into a situation where sex happens they have the knowledge to keep themselves and others safe. If you don't get the right info you get the wrong idea. "Abstinence only" DOES NOT WORK.

well, it depends on the state for age of consent (ages 14-18) and that means that at those ages the state believes that the child is mature and able enough to make a choice on their sexual acts. I'm not denying kids don't need guidance, but rather they will not always follow your guidance on sex. When that happens they need to be educated and make the right decisions. Also, this is the first time in years in which teen pregnancies have gone up, a time when abstinence only is being pushed.

You assume that because today's divorce rates can arguably be said to reflect marital satisfaction that divorce rates have always reflected marital satisfaction. You did not take into account historical circumstances. To say that child abuse has increased one must assume to have an ACCURATE accounting over time of its occurrence, and we do not.

So like i was saying once your so called daughter turns 13, since she can live however she once at that age, it would be fine in your mind that she was having sex, possibly contracting aids, herpes, HPV, shooting heroin, doping up, letting boys knock her up, etc. According to your logic this would all be up to her and you would have no say or discipline about it because at 13, ITS HER LIFE.

yes and what are you? you possibly cannot be the very smartest person that is alive. No i dont want total freedom. I want to be treated like I can do things without having people say every negative thing they can. When I choose to have kids I want them to be able to trust me. Not hide things from me afraid that I'll hate them, yell at them, or do something worse to them. surely you can understand that much at least? And please don't judge me based on only my age. i meant dont judge me as an idiot because im 14.I know what a responsible parent is. My family has all different types of parenting. My parents are the best and they dont keep us in cages. they let us try new things let us not be afraid that if we do something they'll be angry. how many of "i cant date till im 30" do you hear? or "i need to be home by 8 or im dead" or "i can only invite 3 friends over" what if 4 friends want to come over though?

i can see your point of view but 13 is a little young, you may not think so but high school is hard. there is a lot of pressure and a lot of people do a lot of developing in their late teen years, having a parent that says "do whatever it's your life" may sound great but you do need some ground rules. such as be home by 8 or you can't have too many friends over. if you just let them go they will probably screw up in such a way that cold be unfixable (AIDS ring any bells?)

"Children of Men" was a decent read, but my novel is nothing like it. The America of 2061 is a logical extension of what we see now, with over 2/3 of college students already female and no end in sight to "affirmative action" for them. Plus, there is nothing preventing pregnancy in my novel except people's unwillingness to reproduce...

This "author" points to the polar opposites of the entertainment industry promoting sex & looks, etc. & the abstainence only message in schools & wants to trash the abstainence message saying that's the problem. What about objecting to the over-sexualization of entertainment? If the dichotomy causing mixed messages is a problem, then why not point to Hollywood as the source of the problem and not saying the abstainence message should be silenced? Insane!
