  • you can't help but feel her pain.

  • sorry about my crappy spelling i can read well im just horribal at spelling.

  • if her inlaws helped her madey she would have had the babey . sad that is 1952 that babey would be turning 60 and that baby may have bin a happy well to do busnis man or women today . that sister in law is a bitch its not a 50s thing they have people like that today . im a man so i should stay out of this because im never going to have a babey i just fell bad for thies women.

  • U have to keep in mind that her sister in law was probably in shock, let alone hurt. She thought claire dishonored her brother's memory....not to mention also the shock of hearing claire say abortion is the only way. Obviously becky was freaked out over everything. I'm not saying becky was right....but claire really hit her with a lot at once, you know?

  • I would think that the in-laws would have had to accept this surprise pregnancy and loved the baby. I don't know though, I was born in the 80s. lol

  • you know its good acting when you realize you hate that stupid cunt of a sister in law. but anyways i cant imagine being under that much stress at the time.

  • do u know what something i think that claire would have been better off moving on and having her baby or taking up her boss' offer of staying in a home and giving her baby up for adoption and trying to have some sort of life that so called family in law of hers werent worth the hassle and danger of trying to procure an abortion that sister inlaw such a bitch and as for the way the mother in law was talking about the divorced woman in part 2 disgusting self righteous people!

  • @austenbrontefan

Her in-laws were not worth either killing or dying over.

  • @Vydio dont get me wrong i am 100 per cent in favour of a woman's right to have a say in what happens to her body but yes i also completely agree with your statement not worth it at all!

  • Typical in-laws.

  • so sad she had no support from anyone

  • @TheGothicMaria That isn't true... people got it in the 1960s all the time, even in small towns

  • Wow Demi Moore so good in this!

  • anyone else get a stomach ache while watching this? It's so disturbingly real

  • Demi was excellent in this. She really portrayed the horror of this well.

  • she really thought by sticking a knitting needle that way would prevent the pregnancy.

  • @sanyo51 No, the baby was already there. She was trying to kill it.

  • no abortion shud not be legalized..prevention is better than cure..we shud just try to avoid to put ourselves in situations like dis and if we do get in situations liek dis we shud bare the consequences of our own actions...i was 18 wen ig to pregnant and a freshman in college...i tried to ask ppl for help on wat to do i was scared and confused..everyone talked me into abortion and wen it came down to dat..i just cudnt do...if you do this u will always regret it and ppl die from this also.

  • I'm so glad the world has changed since that era...

  • There were abortion protesters in my town, on the sidewalk by the highway holding signs that said "Abortion kills children" and "Jesus saves and heals". Then I got to another town about 13 miles away and there were more at the 4 way stop, they even had young kids holding signs.

  • this movie happened to come out a time when I found out I was pregnant and my husband wanted to terminate the pppregnancy he finally wore me down because I didn't feel ready to be a parent either, But, it's a decision I regret everyday!

  • People in the 50's were so backward it aint funny. And "pro-lifers" as they like to be called are just as ignorant. They would have us all believe that women wont try to abort their babies if the facilities arent there to do it. No pro-lifers, women have been aborting babies for centuries, for better or worse. And many died trying. Do you lot really want to go back to backyard abortions????

  • @cherton Hell yes, they were backward. You should see that 50's educational video about the predator guy and they call him sick because he's a 'homosexual'

  • "How dare you shame us like this?" WTF!? It always gets to me when the blame is placed solely on the woman. That lovely brother had an equal part to play, but that seems to always get lost on the fog known as the good old double standard.

  • i dont understand why she didnt bring up the brother. she didnt even mention him. to them it appeared that she just went and got pregnant by anyone.

  • This is Demi Moore's best acting role -- she really breaks your heart.

I didn't recognize Catherine Keener as "Becky"; I've never seen her as a blonde before.

  • It disgusts me the way women are treated...They are the most discriminated against people in history

  • @setustraight I dont think thats all true, alittle extreme even, we have the blacks and gays to think about.

  • @hursts Black people were only in slavery for a few centuries, and even gays were excepted a few thousand years back. Women in every culture and race around the world were treated less than men. It has been like this for many thousands of years all around the world.

  • I don't believe in abortion myself, but I'm not so stupid as to think making women abort illegally at home is a good idea.

  • Wow, this movie actually made me pro-choice. Shit, this is utterly horrible.

  • the sad thing is people thing this is drastic measures but actually it was pretty normal, I even know someone who did that to herself

  • @ShesThe1yup I think, Not sure but I THINK Whoopi Goldberg admitted to doing this to herself with a wire hanger in the park. . again i'm not sure but I think i remember her mentioning it.

  • @BehindTheHarleyShop whoah takes alot of guts to admit that, poor whoopi, society was so harsh back then

  • @BehindTheHarleyShop And where exactly did she admit this????

  • @BehindTheHarleyShop I just looked it up, nndb . com says it too.

  • 4:21 I flinched good gawd

  • i cant beleive women actuallly had to resort to such methods back then =\

  • He would have been there for the baby too.

  • This is so sad.

  • This is why Woe vs wade is so important! I had a friend how did this to herself with a wire coat hanger before the right for women was passed. HELL, PURE HELL!

  • @GuitarMama1963

    Roe v Wade*

  • @GuitarMama1963

    How terrible

  • I feel nauseous i swear i almost threw up I could never ever do that.

  • omg, watching that knitting pin scene almost made me sick. Seriously....I feel nauseous

  • sometimes if they could get themselves to bleed enough or w/e then go to hospital then they could say they were miscarrying and then the dr, could do an abortion

  • Not me, just my oiney hurt which is strange which is why I am neither pro life nor pro choice, I am just fighting hard not to let myself get pregnant.

  • Oh yes, Becky, when Claire was having sex she couldn't stop thinking about how to shame your family.

Man, I hate her sister in law. She looks like a bleach blond version of Margaret Hamilton in Wizard of Oz.

  • dangerous lah i am shocked to see that

  • BITCH! - SISTER IN LAW

  • ok, anyone that might be getting it in their head to give themselves an abortion with knitting needle, forget it right now, it won't work and it will seriously hurt you.

  • OMG I would have never wanted to live back then. How could her sister in law be so unfeeling to her? Her in laws are control freaks.

  • mannnn fuck that bitch, talkin bout sum how dare u shame us like this, mann she shouldve helped her, so many fuckin ppl worried about wat other ppl think and shit, sumbody shouldve been there for her,.......thas sum bullllshit

  • AHHHH!! knitting needles! I feel awful for this character!

  • That poor woman. No one that desperate should be reduced to using knitting needles and taking medication with alcohol and smoking to terminate a pregnancy they don't want to go through with. T_T

  • This segment of the film was the most powerful. I love Demi's performance as Clare. I can't imagine the fear, regret, sadness & pain she must have felt-in that time, trying to find someone to give her an abortion-the first time I saw this, I was a teen and I was literally SICK and CRYING as she attempted to terminate the pregnancy herself. Whether u agree or not, the fact remains that if we ever regress to a time when it is again illegal, THIS is what WILL happen. I don't want to imagine that.

  • Very nicely said. I also agree that we need to keep it legal because if we don't then this is exactly what will happen, home abortions being performed.

  • Exactly. So horrific to think of.

  • Off the topic - Isn't that Jeremy London who plays the dead husband's brother? I used to think he was hot back in those days and when he was Griffin on "Party of Five"

  • The friend is her dead husband's sister. What a sanctimonious bitch.

  • Wow, the sister "friend" leaves her and pretty much cursed her out. The 50s were some kind of time!

  • It was what she tried to prevent - losing her in-laws, her only family, whose love she didn't want to lose - by terminating the pregnancy so they'd never learn she committed a form of incest with her brother-in-law. T_T

  • That is not incest.

  • They were people Demi could well have afforded to lose. Although in fairness we only got to see her loser of a sister-in-law in action. If all the people who were predicted to die because of a pregnancy of this nature actually expired we'd be dealing with a severe population decline.

  • Didn't they have protection back then? Condoms at least?

  • We have condoms now. It almost sounds like you are trying to say that abortion isn't necessary when people have condoms...

  • I meant back then. But I know the whole thing was unplanned, he was trying to comfort her and she probably was so hurt and lonely she needed the closeness to make her feel better. The husband's sister was real bitch to her. Wish it could have shown how the sister and the family all reacted and felt when they found out that she had bled to death. She should have just packed up and left town and found somewhere to have the baby and give it up for adoption.

  • In the beginning she was offered that alternative. She was sooo worried about what her doofus in-laws thought. Wonder if they ever learned who got her pregnant.

  • This movie is wonderful.

  • Pretty lousy friend

  • i will never forget these 10 minutes!

  • "But everyone is this town KNOOOWS us!" Are they the same sort of loser as you? Birds of a feather ....

  • True...but its the 50's. Very different values back then.

  • Would the man not be compelled to marry her? Wasn't that the solution in those repressive days?

  • ahhhh oh god!

Talk about desperate times and desperate measures!

  • wow, what friend is that??? how dare her...

  • some friend
