To be honest, I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner and doesn't happen more often. Formula 1 managed to cut out driver deaths years ago thanks to a new safety system nearly every year. Whereas these guys are driving round and round in an oval shape at 260mph in cars they were using 9 years ago?! It's terrible. I know for a fact that new safety systems will be introduced next season, but that's only because someone had to die for them to realize, and that's the real tragedy. R.I.P. Dan Wheldon.

You can just here the urgency in the voice of the spotter when the wreck occurred. You can tell he knew that this was going to be a bad wreck for any driver involved.

Not only IndyCar, but the whole motosports spectrum lost one of its most talented drivers. Dan was a well-mannered, well-respected, and very athletic driver. As a fan of NASCAR, I would pay attention to IndyCar as well. This is a huge loss for everyone. But, this is what these drivers risk every day on the racetrack. You just never know who and when. Dan will be greatly missed. My condulences go out to the whole IndyCar communtiy, his family, and all the many fans! May he rest in peace.

OMG, I cant believe some of the disrespectful comments on here. A man has been killed. He was somebodies father, son, brother, friend etc, so before making stupid comments, think about how those people are feeling, and how you would be feeling if somebody close to you had passed last night. Yes its a dangerous sport, but you could just as easily be killed working in a factory, but at least he spent his life doing what he loved.
