Also, the only reason they weren't sucked into the black hole right away is because they were pushing away with the engines. If dumping the core to create an explosive shock wave that they rode away from the black hole didn't work, they would have fallen almost immediately into the black hole.

A quick reply to the whole mass question. The total momentum of the ship was moving toward the black hole.  Simply dumping the ships contents wouldn't have made any difference because the momentum would still be in the wrong direction.

But it reran on Saturday mornings and I had to choose between that and the Banana Splits. I alternated each week. I was a kid. In my defense, I later bought the entire Star Trek series on VHS. I don't think I've watched the Banana Splits again since it was on. But see, that new Kirk just ain't Kirk.

@Battle5tarRJC I think there are certain episodes in each of the series' including the movies, that would have to be scrapped, because of contradictions, discontinuities or other reasons, in order for the franchise as a whole to stand up. The first to go would have to be TNG's All Good Things. It was a great story on its own, but to try to insert such a disjointed inconsistency into canon causes more harm than good.

Black holes, aren't holes. They are collapsed stars, that have such a gravitational pull, that nothing we know of can escape.

Basically. You go past the point of no return, you are going smash into a hyper dense star that will literally crush every atom of your body into itself.

Black holes are so astronomically dense and "heavy" they aren't measured in miles, they are measured in solar massses, stars.
