  • This is all so true. I'm doing NaNoWriMo again this year and it's such a great exercise in just writing and not worrying about editing all the time which is my biggest issue. It doesn't matter if it's perfect now, it's not meant to me and I'm really coming to love the freedom of that.

  • Okay so like for the paper example, instead of trying to imagine the perfect end result and attempting to make each sentence perfectly go along with that, I should just write. I think I could write a lot faster and easier if I knew full well there are going to be mistakes and that that's okay. I mean I can always come back and edit later it's not like I have to hand in a first draft, so why put that pressure on myself? Thanks Samm, I'm really going to try to come to terms with this :)

  • @emmastunes yes, I even write slang and likes and ums when I start writing just so I write more and more. you can always make less out of more but it's a lot harder to make more out of less when it comes to papers :) the perfect end result can only come after you have an imperfect beginning result

  • you should be a teacher :)

  • Jesus, I was thinking about this perfectionism/procrastination problem today while in the shower. How did you know?

I love the way you talk about these problems, you're not a stupid, fake sounding motivational speaker that wants to make everyone feel like a unique snowflake, and that everything will get well. You make us want to act, want to better ourselves. Maybe it's the fact that the pro speakers are just there for money.

Look at me hesitating to post this because of my perfectionism.

  • Besides starting something, it's also difficult to finish something. Because then you have to convince yourself, that it is good enough now and accept that it is not perfect. Just like this posting: I'm looking at it for 5 minutes now, and can't press the button to actually post it. It just takes me a while to realize, that it's not gonna get any better...

  • Can I just say I've been tackling procrastination with my counselor for some time now and now once has she explained the perfection barrier as good as you just did. So thank you!

  • Thanks Samm!! You're very good at this kind of stuff. :)
