Austin was 30, too old. Max was good for Danny, but not handsome enough for most Broadway roles, and he knew it. He went back to Hollywood, where he's played a few supporting pictures in B flicks. Very sad. By the way, Ashley is doing well too.

pffffffft! sorry Gazzara but Judy Garland played Dorothy a teenager at 34 ish. John Travolta was in his 30s for Grease.. sure, they were movies...but stage it can be done too I have seen it. From the audience you can't tell Austin is 30 and he would've been fine. perhaps though even a better Kinicke.

i saw a photo of who was in grease and it wasn't the winners...did some take turns? i know chad went on to bigger and better things. he has also been in the Brady Bunch movie before.

I checked and Judy Garland (b. 1922) played Dorothy at 17 in 1939. John Travolta (b. 1954) played Danny at 24 in 1978. Olivia Newton-John (b. 1948) played Sandy at 30 in 1978. Max and Laura left the show in November 2008. They were replaced by Derek and Ashley, who played the leads until the show closed on Broadway. Laura is subbing as the lead in "South Pacific" on Broadway. Max went back to Hollywood, and is struggling in obscurity where sadly, he will probably remain.

big wooooooops! is my face red. i was sure Judy was older (must have been a rumour that was false that went on for years because i always heard it) I knew ONJ was 30 and again thought John was older. I guess it is different for tv as two of the beverly hills kids playing teens were older. so, sorry i should have researched and not shot off my mouth basically :/

still, i don't think 30 is too old. not now and these shows are "cast" in my opinion anyway. where is austin now? do you know

Their contracts expired. They were offered the leads in the national tour company, but they both declined. Austin is performing on Broadway.

I'm not either. I don't think they were offered new contracts because the show was scheduled to close in a few months anyway. The show wasn't the big money maker they'd hoped, although not a flop either. I think nostalgia for the 50s has faded. Maybe the 60s are in now. They're bringing back "Hair."

perhaps, but Grease is timeless really. not as much as say Guys'N'Dolls or 42nd Street, but you know what I mean. all generations love it. I think Broadway had taken a big hit really. 13, Title of Show, Legally Blonde had closed and also Hairspray. I don't know how long revival musicals are expected to stay on Broadway. There were other surprise closings like Spamalot too.
