  • i love to sing along to this, most of the time I start crying before I can finish it though

  • Only for Christy Moore i would never have heard this beautiful song and I love Christy but I have to say Richard puts real meaning into it. Thanks for uploading. Is love worth the heartache??

  • He wrote this for Anne Briggs.

  • Oh for heaven's sake. They are both damn good!

  • Poetry to music!!!

  • Favorite song of Ian Murphy Mitchard. For all his bluster and fearlessness this song could bring him to that place where yearning replaced his push to travel from one of the country to the other. He was a rare thing, fine as a bee's wing, but I wouldn't have wanted him anyother way. Rest in Peace Ian.

  • If you ever get to experience a Richard Thompson performance...well, it's one that you'll never, ever, forget!

  • Tim will always be greatful for this dedication - going to see him in Dublin on Thursday night - he better play it !!!! Really cant wait to see him , thanks again. X

  • Tor, my hollow soul yearns for your smile. I am only a jester and you are a porcelain princess fine as a bee swing. Please cast a spell my way...............

  • fair play to anyone who can write a song like that.. beautiful........

  • Ahh, this song....so beautiful, so introspective, like Heathcliff and Catherine- love that's so achingly meant to be but so destructive- only music like this can really get to the heart of the story. Richard Thompson is a master guitarist and amazing storyteller. I wonder if he knows how many lives he's touched through his music.

  • grrrrr!

  • thanks for posting this, its truly a beautiful song and an inspiration to me.

  • Amazing song

  • very very very very nice voice and guitarplay.

My new Fav ! Keep on Playing !

  • RT, you are a rare thing. God bless you. Long may you live and thanks for sharing your beautiful heart with us! I try and see you as often as possible - the latest in Asheville, NC. Beauty, you are.

Not to mention his guitar skills. ;)) Really nice one. Thanks so much. Crazy celtic women, eh? rofl Peace, man. You totally made my hub's afternoon.

  • @NancyDrewe Thanks Nancy, glad you both enjoyed it...Tim (kentishbloke)

  • This is so very, very lovely.

don't ask me how, but I have listened to this many times as it was sent to me by a very dear friend, the best.

For Joanne?- yes she is a rare thing - a kindred spirit I have met here on YT.

thank you for posting, with love,

    Julia.x.

  • @roadbikegarden You deserve a dedication of your own J. See what i can do. See you soon hopefully :))

  • @kentishbloke

    My dear Tim,

    I need no new dedication

the best has already been given to me by Andhika, and the rest I know.

  • @nannerbj I'm gonna officially dedicate this to you Jo. My erstwhile No 1 YouTube lady xxxx

  • @nannerbj Despite refusing the chains you have a beautiful spirit and that is all that counts...and to be fair, you ain't that bad looking.....for an Irish bird :))

  • @kentishbloke Thankyou Tim - thankyou very much, its you and the rest of the crew that keep the spirit going. Aint bad looking for an Irish bird Mmmmmm - the new beige wall suites you lol lol lol Beige is definetly your colour

  • First time to hear this song. Best love song ever. Did he write it.

  • @capprah he did indeed

  • the best acoustic guitarist to have ever graced the planet. his voice and lyrics put me in a cornish tavern amongst brigands, smugglers and soldiers.

  • i am disgraced by christy moore's version. he got alot of words wrong.but this is beautiful.

she was a rare thing, fine as a bees wing...

  • Is this an album version?

It's just him and guitar, and somehow more powerful than the recording I have, which has other instruments.

To combine this level of musicianship, with this level of songwriting is just mindblowing.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • @RJcur I believe It's off a Live album, but not sure which :))

  • @RJcur

Well going to see him live if you get the chance, it's a memory that will stay with you

  • What a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful song!!! GENIUS

  • This is a truly beautiful song - I first heard it sung by Christy Moore and thanks to him I'll be listening to Richard Thompson's music from now on. By covering older songs like this Christy is trying to preserve a few pieces of history in music that would otherwise be paved over by mainstream. I was at a gig of his last Friday and he said he's a big fan and he highly recommended that people should have a listen. Amazing songs like this should live forever :)

  • Listen to Paolo Nutini's version, it's beautiful ...

  • @feeonaw Spot on

  • I'm back again again again - Tim if I die before you - you must insist this is played at my funeral - one of my all time favourites !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sorry about the language ...Gordon Ramsay has so much to answer for

  • It's a fucking version not a competition. Get over your bloody fanclubs and medals and shit. Choose what you like and wank over it. Idiots. I love you all btw xxx

  • This is truly magnificent. Comparisons with Christy Moore are a joke. Moores' sounds like some kind of jaunty leprechaun version and is barely better than the laughable Nutini version. These guys should give it a rest and stick to Irish Rover and other stock folk songs. Beeswing is far too beautiful a composition to be sullied by their back o' barn warblings.

I would like to hear Leslie West having a bash at it though . Listen to theme for an imaginary western with Jack Bruce to get an idea.

  • @misterparadise89 I agree mate this version is better than christy moore but I think if your a fan of Christy you would like his version too but just to compare the two songs together Thompsons is the best by far

    But dont ditch christy moore

  • @misterparadise89 d'ont compere 'em' you buffoooon ; they sing it cos they like it !!

  • @misterparadise89

That's a fascinating notion. Wish Felix could cover bass with Leslie.

  • @misterparadise89 You're clearly a cock

  • Chequered Roots did a support for RT in 1988 or 89 at the Gardner Arts Centre Theatre in Brighton. I was proud to be part of that band and to be there on that occasion. This is a top song and Christie (who I rate very highly) is not in this league

  • I have just listened to Chrusty's version of this song, and while he may be much loved here in Ireland, compared to this it is pure shite.

RT is one of the musical geniuses of modern times and it is unfair to compare poor Christy to him!

  • Well to be honest I dont usually answer comments like this - reason being I dont think there is any reason to be so rude. I myself dont think there is any comparison with Richards version and Christys , Richards is clearly a thousand times better but Christy Moore is much respected and loved here as you should well know. This is to me one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and clearly Christy must have taught alot of it too for him to sing it.

  • I always figured that when people played other people's songs, that they were showing them respect. But who knows what musicians think? I can't play anything but bodhrain (or the triangle lol), bec. my hands are too small. Grrr. Have you given a listen to RT doing Oops, I Did It Again? (You know, the Britney Spears song). He makes a song like that sound excellent. I hear my DH singing it sometimes around the house--gives me a really good laugh.(OT, sorry). Regards to Eire. :)) Nancy

  • @nannerbj Well said. Probably worth mentioning that Richard Thompson wrote it (supposedly about Anne Briggs) and this is the original version. We all love Christy, and I appreciate his version too, but I prefer Richard's. Musical taste, eh? Boring if we were all the same x

  • Think Christy is better by the way!! Both brilliant tho

  • I'm usually pretty tough guy, but this song just breaks me apart every time I listen to it.

  • Its fantastic - and yeah it has that effect

  • Lovely song - but my video has stopped moving

You wouldn't want me any other way

  • i cryed laughing. + your sisters epoleptic

  • Hey Tim - came back to this song again tonight and forgot you posted this video. One of my favourite songs of all time and imagine I forgot you posted it . Just love it soooooo much

  • First time I heard this was 2 years ago on YouTube and I cried my heart out. Kind of sums up some of the relationships i've been in (except I'm the one with the bottle of White Horse and the wolfhound lol)

  • I was at a Christy Moore concert and I cried aswell when he sang it but when I got this posting - woooh my God , it cant be beaten - one of the most beautiful songs ever. Top 10 for me ! The price you pay for the chains you refuse - well thats me !!! lol lol

  • ahh..bless ye Jo xx

  • This tune nearly made me cry.

  • richard t lures children to his gingerbread house

  • Richard at his best, and he has written so many durable gems. Nothing wrong with Christy's version either. The measure of any great song is that it moves into the repertoire of singers everywhere. Beeswing deserve that rite of passage.

  • Hear hear..well said :)

  • Nice to see someone with a bit of sense. I personally dont think you can get better than Richard singing it - it is as close to perfect as you can get but Christy is a gem and much loved here in Ireland and other places and for him to cover this song is a compliment in itself .

  • lay off christy clearly christys better

  • no..he isn't in my opinion and clearly a few others here. sorry *shrugs*

  • You are joking arent you HIS VERSION is SHIT and RT wrote this tou arse

  • its good but l prefer the Christy Moore version :)

  • bollux you arse

  • just listen shittt wow

  • A CLASSIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I need this song at least weekly. Thompson's voice is like heaven to me, and this is his best, in my opinion.

  • I just can't stop listening to this song... and I must say, this is much, much better than the Christy Moore version... much, much better... after all, it's Richard's song anyway, isn't it?

  • totally agree with you, Richard wrote it , genius that he is, it couldn't be done better.

  • kiwiwi is right.... the christy version is nothing to be desired in my opinion and yesh it is his song and will never be "perfected" because it already is perfect! Much love for the RT *huggles kiwiwi*

  • not at all london man

  • R U Mad this song has the passion it was written about his wife, this song also needs a british voice by my guess ur irish and u are being biast

  • Magic ,

  • Love this song... it got me through a breakup, or at least I did a lot of crying to it. Even if it made me sadder it's a good kind of sad! Beautiful.

  • tosser..you're blocked dickhead

  • Love this song- nobody plays like Richard!

  • So true! He is one of a kind:))

  • so chillin song ..

  • Where is this version available?

  • sounds like the studio version from the album Mirror Blue.

  • Don't think this is the Mirror Blue version. I believe that version had some other instrumentation on the breaks, but this is just guitar. Also, he changes at least one lyric here - he sings "I'm not the city kind" instead of "factory kind"

  • Fine as a beeswing...!

    Song and a half

  • Great song, great singing

  • -nods in agreement as she cries her heart out- beautiful, isn't it?

  • Heard this song for first time last night in the Dolphin pub Southampton, sang spell-bindingly beautifully by Joel! It certainly gave me goosebumps! Catch him there next time if you can on 21st Jan I think!

    Suse

  • Love this song and Richard's rendition is

    just so spellbinding

    5*.............Barbara

  • Back again - Saturday night / Sunday morning - 4 o clock , but I cant help coming back - its magical . Takes me to a different world maybe the one I want to be in !

  • I actually heard this first at a Christy Moore concert and he does it beautifully but there is no comparison to this . I saved it to favourites and I already have it saved - so I think its clear how much I love this song . Keep promising myself I am going to learn it off properly - its so nice . Have you got a version of Tear stained letter - another gem of Richards. Thanks for this Tim - I never tire of it

  • Yes!...The great Richard...Guy's a genius...Cheer's Timbo...

  • Lovely!

  • Great song
