Mark Twain wasn't an American Symbol, he was THE american Symbol..Damn Mark, you left us with a blank slate when u died :(...I had the privilege to watch the 3 hour documentary about this brilliance of a man. He was a force to be recon with even 2day !!
This video will be used tomorrow in my class to reflect the wisdom, humor, joy, and tears that this wonderful talent gave to us not in vain. A great legacy that shall live on forever!
Thanks for the wonderful photos. And the music brought tears to my weary, old eyes. I think the hymn is called In The Garden. Mark Twain taught more people through his humor than many a preacher in the pulpit.
America's greatest author. I have always loved him. His book Huckleberry Finn is the great American novel. My English professor said so. Huckleberry is so funny in his simpleness. Yet the book is a great commentary on the hypocrisy of society and how goodness is often regarded as evil and evil as good. Twain said more about the evils of slavery through satire than anyone could do in thousands of preachy books.
' Life on the Mississippi ' A wank was the southern slang for starboard thus meaning steer to the right a little. The term for port being ' gig'...hence 'trim a gig'.
Actually his real name was Samuel Clemens. And he never changed it. Mark Twain was his pen name. It related to the periodic measurement of the distance between the bottom of the steamboat and the riverbed. When the leadsman detected a depth of only twelve feet (two fathoms), he would sound the alert: 'By the maaa-ark, twain!'
And he took that pen name because he was a steamboat captain and loved the river. "Mark Twain" meant safe water. What a great man. I want to visit his home in Hannibal, Missouri sometime.
He had a remarkable life. He did and saw so many things. I would encourage anybody to read biographies of his life. Not only was he a great author but his own life was a great story in itself.
i grew a moustache like that once. Pain in the face... or face. Moustaches today have become what Mo-Hawks were 30 years ago. Grow a mo-hawk now you are just a poser-clone wannabe. Grow a moustache and you will be shunned and regarded as a low-life scum. Trust me. Try it. Grow a big one like Mark Twain's.
If I remember correctly, this tune is part of Dvorak's Symphony "The New World" 2nd Movement which in turn relates to a song reportedly sung by African-American cotton pickers.
He is the most quoted author ever. I didn't know this but his personality type is the same as me. Pretty cool. I also found out that on the day of his birth and death, Halley's Comet appeared in the sky.
Thank-you Sara, this is very well done. I have been a Mark Twain fan all of my life, well maybe since I was about nine or so when I first read Tom Sawyer.
Not a bad job, but it strikes me as somewhat sentimental, and if it's one thing Twain hated, it's sentimentality. But then again, I just read "The Damned Human Race" by him, so maybe I'm being too harsh.

brash, witty, dark, eloquent, and most of all very human. The quintessential American.
Bravo, Mark Twain.

The heavens celebrated the birth and death of Mark Twain with Halley's Comet!

And then is played, "In the Garden," not Dvorak.
pegcage 2 years ago
Its NOT a Hymn, It is by Dvorak, it is classical music, of the Romantic Age! But I love Mark Twain too :-)

It is a Afro-American spiritual called Going Home! Dvorak based part of his 9th symphony, From the New World, on it.!
stephenc77098 2 years ago
Alabama: This part of Dvorak's New World Symphony became the melody of the hymn, "Going Home."

No greater life was ever had, or had us in it's sight, or exposed the motives and shortcomings of so many who want to adore him.

Interesting choice of music a Christian hymn. I thought Twain was an atheist. Really good tribute. Lot of neat photos. Thanks.

Yes, Mark Twain was only his nom de guerre.
Another piece of trivia is that it is also an
anagram of ' trim a wank ' as he tells us in
' Life on the Mississippi ' A wank was the southern slang for starboard thus meaning steer to the right a little. The term for port being ' gig'...hence 'trim a gig'.

notes in Life on the Mississippi. A ' wank '

other words...steer to the right

Mark Twain wasn`t his real name. It was Sidney Lawrence Candle before he changed it. By the way; Is Shania Twain related to him?
