BMW X3; never designed to be an offroad vehicle like any other BMW. Coming from many Canadian winters, our 14 year old Dodge Grand Caravan with all season tires could scale icy hills and slippery streets better than ANY BMW x3/x5 or xdrive I've ever seen. If the OP wants a good all rounder with awesome off road capabilities, get a Subaru Outback with a H6 motor. It would DESTROY any BMW x3 on and off road.

@myooyoke these people doesn't seem to know that for sand you need special off-road tires. the bmw x3 comes with tires optimized for roads/asphalt.
Second if you get stuck in sand/snow/mud you have to:
1. turn off esp
2. give more power or even full power from the accelerator
It is really easy. But again the tires are very important if you wanna go play off-road. Unfortunately some people just don't know what they are doing, but they keep doing it (the wrong way) anyway.

To drive on soft sand, you MUST let air out of the tires. Airing the tires down from 40 psi to 10-15 psi just about doubles the surface area of the tire on the sand, which allows you to "float" on top.
Some guys even air down to 5 lbs (with special tires)
If you would have aired down to 10-15 psi, you could have driven out without anyone pushing.
Then you just have to drive carefully to a gas station to air the tires back up. Don't corner too hard or drive too fast on under-inflated tires.
