First time I played the game, I completed the temples in this order:

Forest

Fire

Water

Spirit

Shadow

I didn't have to go back and get items from other temples out of order and the medallions in the game are listed in that order... Why does everyone say you need to go to the Shadow Temple before the Spirit Temple?

@Fanntasticful Just go on to the Shadow Temple, you have to beat it eventually. You need a particular item, which will be necessary in the Spirit Temple. It's an excellent temple, the Shadow Temple.
