Ho Fo! When you mentioned the velvety mouthfeel I figured he might have used oats, they have that kind of effect on beer. In his recipe he used .5 lb flaked wheat (I was wrong!), which are similar to oats as far as the creaminess they add but I think oats are way creamier. So I suspect that's where the velvety mouthfeel came from.
On the other hand, I've never used canned pumpkin so that could have helped with the velvety mouthfeel.
