@brucegrotecloss maybe a lack of compression, caused by worn piston rings or , more likley, a valve isn't seating all the way. try starting it with a can of carb cleaner spray, that usually works for me.

What pulley sizes are you running? What is your top speed?

I'm wanting to build a racing lawn mower or off road lawn mower I don't know which one to pick but any ways I'm using a old murray that has the square hoods and it has a 12 b&s with a 5 speed trans axle I'm going to lock the trans axle and I was just wonder what gear ratio would be best for me to use

@johnmartinez95 I always tell people to go with a 1:1 ratio, basically use the same size pulley front and rear... weather it be 2 5" or 2 6" it will be the same speed... but bigger pulleys are better, you get more friction on the belt.

@TheMontagevids usually a 1:1 ratio is best, like 4" and 4" or 5" and 5", ect... they will all be the same speed, but smaller pulleys are easier to fit, stay wit 4 or 5" pulleys and you'll have good low end and decent speed

hehe makes me want to properly fix my mower... I had a few problems, ladt time all 3 bolts holding the trans broke off when pressing the brakes! I am going to put back stainless ones on there, much tougher. Cant wait till I ride it in the snow!

@Fearlessfront I have them, but they were too strobng and broke the rusty old bolts holding the tranny! I am gonna piut gearbox oil in it one of these days, since the old oil was as thick as custard...

I cant wait till mine is finished. It has been driving a few times, but each time the belt came off, engine starts smoking like hell, or something esle. I think it should be fine now, however I say that everytime!

@CCSinventions Not sure, it's a 28 cu. in. briggs flathead, i/c block, it was originaly rated for 12.5h.p., but I shaved the head, ported, and put in an ohv piston and connecting rod.

@Fearlessfront More fuel, more air, equals more power..... Plus your higher compression...... Your connecting rod is stronger too, I believe.... You can safely run it up to 5000 RPM and still last. (We hit 7000 at the end of straights.) I would guess your HP peaks out around 19 to 20 HP at 5000.

And your front tires are fine. Floatation is needed in mud. Just need w i d e r a p a r t.

Oh, next time you freshen up the engine, go 20 over on the piston.. OR 80 over. :)
