I am now age 67 and live in Pennsylvania but when I was a child of seven or eight and living in Delmar, my dad would always take us to the Catskill Game Farm. It was free and we loved going to see the animals. I am sorry to see it has closed.
The original farm closed because the operating costs and insurance costs started to skyrocket, and there was a very noticable decline in ticket sales over the years. I went there one final weekend before they closed. The place was definatley in better shape back when I used to go as a kid.
The Catskill Game Farm was opened in 1933 by Roland Lindemann and was still owned by the Lindemann family as Catskill Game Farm Inc at the time of its closing. In August 2006,the Catskill Game Farm announced that it would be closing on Columbus Day of that year, ending its 73-year run.Its owners attributed the closing to mounting financial difficulties, dropping attendance, and legal regulations leading to the shutdown of its Splashdown attraction, though Splashdown itself never violated regulations.
the owner was old and wanted to retire, made sure all the animals found safe home, thats wat the news reported wen it closed, it didnt have 2 do wit the economy
It was fun there in the summer. I last went in probably 2004. Its another victim of the perpetual crap economy in upstate NY that our politicians dont like to talk about .Its got nothing to do with the current situation but that just made it worse. Keep voting these dimwits in so they can really destroy all of the state. Maybe Hillary was thinking about doing something about it when she was senator, but she didnt.
Thank you for this. I literally stopped everything I was doing to watch this in its entirety. I am 33 now but my family and I spent many years in the Catskills. We stayed at the Rip Van Winkle Motor Lodge and we visited the Catskill Game Farm many a time in my early years. One of my favorite pics is of me on my Dads shoulders at the Farm. I must have been 3. Time sure moves fast. This is just a microcosm of many a place with many a memory. Sad. But time doesn't stop. But the beauty is that natu
@paulslemoine Thanks paulslemonie I will be looking foward to it but it's sad to look at it seeing it for now since I remember GOING to the Catskill Game Farm when I was younger
I remember going here once as a kid. In fact, in my room I still have a deer statue that my parents got me from one of the gift shops here. And at 5:26, I remember sitting on those bleachers and watching some trainer give a tiger some cereal and than the tiger would do a trick. So weird that it is closed now.
Thanks for some real tear jerker... I used to live around three milles from the Game Farm. Stegmanns Hide away Resort. Many Resorts and Attractions in the Catskills have closed over the years. Ours too ,-( Being that I to live in Germany now am thrilled when I find something posted from "Home"
I love the Catskills and i quess it will always be my home ! !
I went to the Catskill Game Farm on a field trip there with my Kindergarten class back in 2004 and then I went there with my Grandfather back in 2005 suck that it closed because I remember the kiddie rides, the Splashdown attraction and the animals sucks that it's now abandoned I MISS that place makes me want to cry sniff sniff R.I.P Catskill Game Farm I will miss you you just hold to many memories sniff sniff :(
How were you able to gain access? Do you know the owners? I am interested in buying a majority of the remaining signs and any rides if still available.
My Dad worked here as a teenager, training the Dancing Bear. I remember all the times I visited as a child and all the years I would bring my children here. Thanks for the video.
Reading about flooding in the Catskills brought the Game Farm to my mind--my family used to take me when I was a toddler in the 60's. I didn't know it had closed. So sad, but this video is a lovely tribute--thank you for posting it!
Thanks Paulslemoine for the memories...Was fortunate enough to have been able to bring my daughter when she was young...You could see it wasn't in top form though, even though the weather wasn't great, we had the place nearly all to ourselves...IT closed due to finacial reasons, the whole area wasn't the tourist place it once was...So many Catskill hotels had closed down since the late 60's. too bad, beautiful area...Can't believe it's been 5 years gone...Gasoline prices would kill it now 4 sure
Only realized today that this place was closed, I'd only visited there about 7-8 years ago. It was so busy at the time, it's weird to think it's gone now. Would have had no idea. Truly a special place, it shall be greatly missed.
Ahhh, the memories. I'm glad I got to bring my kids when they were little so they could see where their mom went to growing up. I wasn't aware they'd closed it down.
I can't believe that this place is closed. Very disappointing wanted to visit there this summer. Use to come here my whole childhood lots of memories here. The video and music fit perfect thanks.
Retirement is one thing want to be rich off of those poor animals is another. When I went as a kid. The place was spottless. When I went back as an adult it was a mess. Stuff that could be taking care of easily. Like removing garbage from the swan area.
when i was little, that was my fav place to go. the last summer there felt like yesterday. its amazing how time goes by. i wish my baby brother experienced this.
@paulslemoine The Catskill Game Farm held special place in my heart. At its peak in the 1960s, the game farm had an average season of up to half a million visitors. When it was down to about 100,000 year needed between 150,000 to 200,000 visitors annually to make the operation viable. It also was a run down it in last years needed major upgrades.
Thanks should also go to the Lindemanns and Schulzes for all of the joy Catskill Game Farm brought so many people over so many years. Business is business, and while CGF is and will continue to be missed everyone should understand this.
took my nephew to adirondack animal land Memorial Day weekend. Nice place but no replace Catskill Game Farm. Went to the game farm ever year from age 2 to 13.
@Screvier The Trip to adirondack animal land was just but it also bring a flood of memories back of me and my sister at the catskill game farm. Its sad they her son never can go to the game farm. I guess time move on.
A very touching and nostalgic video, as three generations of both my wife's family and my own enjoyed Catskill Game Farm. The music matches the mood of the video perfectly....I've heard it before, but can't place it. What is its name, and who was the composer? Thank you for a melancholy update on an old favorite.
@HabsRooter Thanks for your comment. It was very sad walking through there. I was there as a child several times and after that w/ neices & nephews as they grew up. The music is Clair De Lune, I believe it is Debussy. Thanks again :-)
this is so sad i went there as a child as my aunt lives near there. i miss this place so much thank you for at least helping bring back some memories:) god bless
I just got off the phone with my mother after talking about what we were going to do when we went up to visit her. She said they wanted to take us and our son to the Catskill Game Farm. I was so happy, it was one of my best memories and wanted to share it with me son. I went online to get info for when we were going to go and was shocked to see it was closed. I am so upset and sad that it is no longer there to share with my son and husband.
Well produced video. It did bring tears to my eyes too. I loved that place as a young child, and was upset to hear it had closed. However, if the animals were suffering, as I believe, than it is only right that the placed closed. Their well-being should always be the priority. I have a friend who brought her kids there the year before they closed, and she said even though the kids had a good time, it was uncomfortable for her. You could just tell the place was not being kept up well.
so sad! i have so many memories here. went there as a kid in the early 70s and i didnt know they closed will visist this year. i miss these places of my youth thanks so much for posting even though brings tears to my eyes
The recent controversy surrounding the conditions of the animals or their ultimate fate did not make me feel good. I have great memories of the place (and pictures) but if it were open I would not take my children there just on principle. I am glad concerned people were able to buy and care for many of the animals during the sale.
I cried !!! I didn't know that it was closed. I was planning to take my daughter there this summer. It was the BEST place to grow up! Thanks again,
