I can hear her using her familiar breathy vocals back when she released Daydream but still her belting register sounded clear and powerful really delightful and charming ... so for me it also remains a mistery how suddenly and misteriously she lost some of these qualities when she released Butterfly back in 1997 ... everything happened too fast: her becoming more sexy and comfortable with herself as a free woman .. losing some spark in her vocals.
as a fan of mariah's i'm not that ignorant lol and I totally agree she lost her voice wayy too fast (tho considering she's had vocal nodules ever since she was a kid, it was bound to happen), to me her voice sounds different at certain times during the 90s. 90-92, 93-95, 96-97 98- to now her voice changed a lot in such a short time.

People always like to complain about her 'whispering' in her songs now, I think she's just trying to preserve whatever power is left in her voice and belt when the situation calls for it. the thing many don't get is that her voice has always been fragile, she's even said so herself.

mariah barely gave herself, let alone her vocals, a break throughout the 1990s. She was touring constantly,performing every single year, full voice. Keep in mind, she's naturally an alto, so her high notes and whistle notes require her to put forth a little more effort. When you're constantly singing and barely doing vocal rests, it can make you sound a little off here and there. She barely got sleep and when she woke up,it was back to rehearsals and performances,back to back for over ten yrs.

She did well here. Its her song. Why can't she improvise as she wishes? Isn't what it makes her an artist. Consider the program, an hour of constant singing, high notes. and more. You have no idea what it takes to sing for hours. I promise you that.
All signs point to the probability that Mariah just has, and has always had, a fragile voice. She has said that since she was a child, she's had nodules, and so whenever she does certain things those nodules swell. And that's not her fault. The fact that she lasted so long with a pretty much terminal vocal prognosis speaks to her extraordinary technique. This is a woman who's had vocal training (from an opera singing mom!) and who visits her throat doctor regularly. You're blaming the victim.
One reason for her decline that you fail to cite is her nodules, which she's had since childhood. Not to mention that just a week before her hero performance on Oprah she performed Butterfly and My All perfectly on SNL. Clearly, there was some incident that exacerbated her nodules to a point that they had never been irritated before. The fact that the timbre of her voice has gradually been changing since 1990 shows that her nodules were growing the whole time, and her technique only saved her.

Well I went to your profile and saw you are a devout Christina Aguilera fan. That explains it all. Mariah Carey has never lost her voice, she has changed her vocal stylings. And of course she makes mistakes singing, no one is perfect. Does she really bother you that much to make these negative videos? I love Mariah Carey, but that doesn't mean I think negatively of Christina Aguilera or Celine Dion or Whitney Houston. They are all great in their own respect.
@mariahlover666 You're a very naive person if you really believe she doesn't have permanent chord damage, all singers do, the ones that have used their instrument for longer periods of time and don't take good care of them with proper rest and avoid taking excessive substances like alcohol or drugs, tend to have more damage than normal. Two main examples are Houston & Carey, one a drug addict and the other an alcoholic, though Houston did have better care than Carey.

I think the main reasons would be her drinking problem and her lack of proper rest in her live presentations from 1994-1996, she was doing too many live performances without resting the proper time. Even Houston lasted longer in having serious damage to her chords after her substance addiction, that's because Houston had more time to rest her chords during live performances, but unfortunately Carey didn't.

I did notice a difference between the Music Box and Butterfly albums. Daydream is a REALLY good album but it doesn't have as many high-registered songs as the previous albums. Butterfly was really low in tone; I wonder if she was going through some stuff emotionally even aside from her issues with Tommy Mottola or anything...hmmm...

I can hear her using her familiar breathy vocals back when she released Daydream but still her belting register sounded clear and powerful really delightful and charming ... so for me it also remains a mistery how suddenly and misteriously she lost some of these qualities when she released Butterfly back in 1997 ... everything happened too fast: her becoming more sexy and comfortable with herself as a free woman .. losing some spark in her vocals.

as a fan of mariah's i'm not that ignorant lol and I totally agree she lost her voice wayy too fast (tho considering she's had vocal nodules ever since she was a kid, it was bound to happen), to me her voice sounds different at certain times during the 90s. 90-92, 93-95, 96-97 98- to now her voice changed a lot in such a short time.

People always like to complain about her 'whispering' in her songs now, I think she's just trying to preserve whatever power is left in her voice and belt when the situation calls for it. the thing many don't get is that her voice has always been fragile, she's even said so herself.

Christina can't even sing past A4 without straining (past the passagio) and below A3 her notes are so weak and the colour of her voice disappears. mariah barely gave herself, let alone her vocals, a break throughout the 1990s. She was touring constantly,performing every single year, full voice. Keep in mind, she's naturally an alto, so her high notes and whistle notes require her to put forth a little more effort. When you're constantly singing and barely doing vocal rests, it can make you sound a little off here and there. She barely got sleep and when she woke up,it was back to rehearsals and performances,back to back for over ten yrs.

All signs point to the probability that Mariah just has, and has always had, a fragile voice. She has said that since she was a child, she's had nodules, and so whenever she does certain things those nodules swell. And that's not her fault. The fact that she lasted so long with a pretty much terminal vocal prognosis speaks to her extraordinary technique. This is a woman who's had vocal training (from an opera singing mom!) and who visits her throat doctor regularly. You're blaming the victim.

One reason for her decline that you fail to cite is her nodules, which she's had since childhood. Not to mention that just a week before her hero performance on Oprah she performed Butterfly and My All perfectly on SNL. Clearly, there was some incident that exacerbated her nodules to a point that they had never been irritated before. The fact that the timbre of her voice has gradually been changing since 1990 shows that her nodules were growing the whole time, and her technique only saved her.

I think the main reasons would be her drinking problem and her lack of proper rest in her live presentations from 1994-1996, she was doing too many live performances without resting the proper time. Even Houston lasted longer in having serious damage to her chords after her substance addiction, that's because Houston had more time to rest her chords during live performances, but unfortunately Carey didn't.

But one thing people over look, is that her voic at it's essence is beautiful, no matter how nasal, tired, or strained it may be, it still manages to sound PRETTY, like the way she sings "LORD knows" at 7:30 or "tear them away" at 7:41, even in her worst performances (which the Oprah performance by NO means was) she still manages to belt out gorgeous notes here and there

I did notice a difference between the Music Box and Butterfly albums. Daydream is a REALLY good album but it doesn't have as many high-registered songs as the previous albums. Butterfly was really low in tone; I wonder if she was going through some stuff emotionally even aside from her issues with Tommy Mottola or anything...hmmm...

@kaiyno Mariah sounded incredible in Brazil. My All was 100% live and she killed it. The bits in I Still Believe that were live were strong and anything but strained. She most definitely wasn't off key either. Maybe you don't have the musical ear (which would explain a lot, being a die hard Xtina fan) but MC was perfectly in tune.
Christina has sounded awful live since the beginning of her career. Her grunting, screaming and shouting has progressively got worse (as seen on The Voice).

@kaiyno I know what you said, but I was justifying why Christina is worse than them. She has a terrible technique. The damage she has done to her voice in the past 10 years is far worse than the damage Mariah has inflicted on hers. Mariah can still sustain a belted F5 with ease, whereas Christina has always had trouble sustaining any note above a C5. It's no longer a matter of belief, it's fact.

Mariah took care of her voice, but she drinks too much. Alcohol is a contributing factor to Mariah's 'decline' (1997 she started partying).
