I saw the movie before reading the book and thought it was decent. I never really thought of comparing it to Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. THEN, I read the book and I was all like, "Wow, that movie SUCKED!!!" So yeah...

And one more thing: Before I saw the movie trailers, I thought the name of the book was pronounced EE-Ra-gon.

I loved the book. Considering the kid who wrote it was a teenage boy, I'm surprised it wasn't just LOTR with the names changed. Most of my guy friends can't write for their lives, so I'm (pleasantly) amazed that Paolini's work was so good. And slimeonthedimes, if you didn't like the book, you probably should stay away from fantasy books in general, since they're obviously not your style.

As for the Age Debate, he may have STARTED Eragon when he was fifteen, but it got published much, much later. Notice then that when he wrote Eldest and Brinsigr, which were arguably worse, he wasn't a "teenage boy" anymore, he was in his twenties.

As for Lord of the Rings, it's a compilation of Nordic legends that were featured in stories long before Lord of the Rings. Like Wagner's Ring Cycle. It's the staple fantasy work because it's what got popular, and went on to inspire things like Harry Potter and the Pern series, which all use fantasy elements drawn from LotR.

It's worth pointing out that for all that Eragon is inspired by Star Wars (and it is), the same is equally true of Star Wars being extremely inspired by Dune, and you could draw an equally long list of similarities between the two.

No, he started writing it when he was 15 - the author's note/credits/whatever in the back of the book tells you this. It took him a few years to complete, though, so you're probably technically right.
