I justlearned this. I don't think most Americans realize that a law discriminating against women on the basis of sex wasnt struck down as violating the equal protection clause until the 1970s, in reed v reed. Apparently, the assholes of the world were most scared of their own wives, despite all the lamenting about free slaves!
