  • And the pronunciation of Elijah was super inconsistent.

  • This wasn't a bad performance (the dynamic contrasts were good) but, hallelujah Jesus, the last chord was really out of tune....

  • THE WOMEN DUSENT SING GOOD

  • around 1:47 sounded really bad

  • REALLY Flat!

  • the women's voices were way too light. this is not a solo jazz piece, it's a negro spiritual. their tone needs to be dark and rounded.

  • the women are way too light. this is a spiritual, their tone needs to be dark and rounded.

  • the women are waaay too light. this is a spiritual, their tones need to be dark and rounded.

  • Nees lots of work on parts at the end-no thuird on last chord?

  • The first half was amazing, but the end went far too fast. And it lacked the aforementioned 'explosion' feel. Like pandora's box being opened and everything goes crazy. It had the same feel as the first half which doesn't really work.

  • Yeah. Our choir ended up changing the key too...ended up singing the end half a whole step above the key it was written in...It happens. haha. But it sounded great.

  • The sopranos at the end didn't quite reach the correct notes

  • the girls are fantastic

a little sharp when they come in for the second verse

    but amazing none the less

i guess that the ending wasnt as strong as the beginning, but this was really really great

  • pretty good! i enjoyed everything about it except for the end the tenors were off and so were the baritones.... but overall very nice

  • Comment removed

  • the baritones are sharp which kinda put everything a little off

  • It soundss good but I have to admit the attitude portrayed is off...

  • bright..baritones are sharp.. rushed...haha when we did this it was much different was it really supposed to be like this? i guess it all depends on the director i guess...but we are more "spiritual?" i dunt really know..bleh..maybe im just being a critic or something but i really didnt like it

  • We talk about this kind of stuff all the time in music... where a group is just singing the notes on paper.. Great at the note singing... but what is the song about? The best choirs performing this song are the powerful voices... that implement a harsh ending to every line. As the end should have ...exploded like a bomb.

  • this is a song to be performed with a certain attitude, definitely not the one they had. it's about facing death so the dancing and singing it as if it were a pop song was unnecessary. i'm singing this song with my chamber choir right now and i couldn't be enjoying it more.

  • how can a song be gay?? think about that. does that makes sense?? NO!!

  • haha this song ruined my life in high school too, I understand your pain :)

  • lol thank you FINALLY someone understands how i feel, lol but no seriously i would have enjoyed it if my chorus didn't have such a hard time with it. and btw i had an all GIRLS choir and i was in the section that had to sing the guys part. so yeah :} u see what i mean.

  • Altos!.. NO!. ha.

  • wow, they didnt do a very good job with keeping the key... they ended like two half steps from what they started and they were really sharp all throughout.

  • Funny thing is, just today I heard a recording of those same singers that same year that was 1000 times better in balance (mostly because of mic placements) and tuning (mostly because of health). Too bad performance is the one the world is judging. Frankly, everyone who criticizes the tuning in this one is dead right. Yikes! I ought to know - I'm their conductor!

  • ouch tenors!!

  • they actually aren't that bad. :) our choir did a different version though. i think every choir does this song in one way or another. good job! :D

  • not good!

  • not bad. :) a little bit too much sound from the woman though, it was hard to hear the men.

  • Pebblebrook did it better than this lame choir. at least we didn't change keys 5 different times

  • I think all the versions suck! Go listen to Polyphonic Spree!

  • horrible

    muy desafinado_

  • LOL! I think every school sings this song. Not too bad. The Guys have to kick a** at their part or the song tends to not do soo good.

I recommend watching the BYU-Hawaii choir sing it. They did a tremendous job!

  • Very good post thank YOU!!!

Katrina thank you for sharing this great song. It is very very good.

    Michael

  • way too fast, you seemed to fall apart midway through, and the soprano section needs work.

  • eeeehh...not so good, tenors..

  • haha my class sung this in a concert last night

we sonded way better and were in the 8th grade

  • haha our school did better!!!

  • From the perspective of someone in a professional choir and of a professional vocalist it was wasn't bad, but then again not great. Overall it was ok.

  • The end was kinda bad, and overall pitch was iffy.

  • the choir needs to wok more on their listening, as their pitch wavers easily. also, the guys need to work on sing with a taller and fuller voice, especially the tenors.

  • csa does it best!

  • there are two different keys going on at the same time. granted acapella is not easy but there is no excuse for not listening to each other.

    Too fast.

  • pretty sloppy

  • Basses...trying to rush lol

  • you guys really shouldn't have done this song it sucks badly

  • en mi coro qe es de alumnos de enseñanza secundaria, estamos practicando esa cancion algo mui dificil, para personas entre 13 y 17 años xD , pero nos saldra bien xD

    mui buen video ;)

    saludz!

    /Panshoo

  • I love Moses Hogan. He is my favorite arranger. We are singing this right now in choir and I love it.

  • It was really good, but there were a few times where the tenors were having trouble reaching for those notes, and sometimes the Alto 1 part was quiet.

  • pretty good. very nice interpretation.

  • I think it was pretty good, except for the more..dissonant parts (ie. the ending, and the "if i could..etc). Tuning issues, mostly. The beginning was solid, though. The balance within the women was great, although the basses did overpower the tenors, which is good in some parts, but not in others.

  • pretty good but I think my high school choir did it better when they performed it some years ago. unfortunately, most of the members have graduated; we're doing it again this year but many of the new members can't sing it.

the tenors sounded weak when they sang the 'hallelujah lord' part but I guess it's pretty high in their range.

    re: vethraxi

personally, I think the tenor part is more fun but to each their own :)

  • This was great. We're singing this in my choir now. I'm totally in love with the song. Very nice performance, guys.

P.S. The alto part ROCKS. ^^

  • OK, some comments said it was flat, some said sharp, so I kept checking, and it starts OK, then the third time the sopranos freaked and made everyone go sharp. But did anyone notice that those soloists had to sing that insanely high part 1/2 step HIGHER than written and THEY DID IT! Our sopranos never would have! (Altos rule!) I thought it was good.

  • Excellent work despite the glitches. Good tone for the tenors and basses. The soprano and alto coulda been a little sweeter but hey! This I think is a good choir.

  • I'm leaving on tour today for Ireland with my chamber choir and we're doing this as our finale song =]

  • this is a difficult song to maintain accurate tone and is easy to slowly move flat on key, or in this case go sharp

  • we are doing this song it suxs im the only one in the chior who can keep a beat lawdy lawdy

  • Are you also in band? That would explain it, lol.

  • no but i dance but theres a kid n the group who is in band cant count a quarter for his life lol

  • awesome we are doing this song this year!!! :)))

  • my high school madrigal group did it this yr

  • don't you know how to sustain notes? the ending part was a whole tone flat...

  • It was pretty good! In my opinion, the best part of the whole song was the very begining when the men started.. then it kinda went a little downhill. Although, I think that if there weren't microphones it would've sounded a lot more blended because the women were especially loud. The tenors need to blend a little more in all the falsetto parts by the way. But overall you guys are awesome! I love this song!

  • Great Job, I love this song, i sang with a International Choir, and its amazing, you have a few stuff you could work on but for being such a small group, you did a great job of blending and bringing out all the parts

  • thanks!

  • i love this song, i did it in high school (Go CFHS!!) It's my favorite ever!! Very good job!

  • You don't sound half as good as the Philippine Madrigal Singers

  • so...

  • thats not my high school

  • What? You mean a group of high school sophomores, juniors and seniors don't sound as good as a chorus of college music majors, alumni, and faculty? Of COURSE they don't! I had the pleasure of joining in rehearsal and performance for a week with the Phil. Mads, and any high school choir that good would be examined for steroids! Jeez, people here are so judgmental!

  • i think this is the best comment posted here... Thanks! By the way, I put this up about two years ago just for madrigals to hear and see, and NEVER expected all of these comments...Hope all is well!

  • yeah...my high school's concert choir did this a few years back...and they did it ten times better.

  • horah for school spirit!

  • In my opinion, this wasn't as good as you make it sound. Vowels are drilled in my choir's head so much that when i hear a choir like this with such spread vowels, i can't help but notice. You may think I'm bias but i think my school's choir did a better job, and tomorrow we are heading to nationals with this song and 8 other songs, so there are people that agree with me.

If you don't believe me, go watch "Elijah Rock" by Everglades Legacy Concert Choir

  • Why is it necessary to put people down? I heard your YouTube video of this and I heard a lot of good things. Wonderful, rich sound, but why compare with a group of 33? I also heard things that I and Moses Hogan would have done differently (and, yes, I had the pleasure and terror of having Hogan judge my choir on his music, and he liked it. Of course, he heard us at festival, not at the end of a 3 hour school concert.) Let's learn from and support each other, OK? Choral music is not about combat!

  • This was pretty good and for the most part you guys have a great sound. This is one of my most favourite choral pieces to sing-and my favourite Moses Hogan. I think we took it at a different tempo though.

  • yeah, it did kind of fall apart at the end. Definately added breathes where there shouldn't have been any, and the sopranos were a bit belted.

  • definately a little rushed, but still great.

  • I didn't think that was good at all! It collapsed at the end completely and the choir looked so affected! I hate that!

  • Well, thats a pretty good choir, but a few adjustments..at the begining when sopranos come in saying"elijah rock shout, shout"they were flat..your bases, and tenors were trying to hard, and kinda of rushed the song a little, and your altos were wayyy, entirely to loud..and at the very end,(the coda), your whole choir was flat...a lil'more practice please.

  • ha si fiv idfijdfofjdfosd

  • fine. but my choir was better

  • Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! i'm soooo proud of you guys. go BHHS. eewww who would've thought i'd have school spirit?

  • not bad you sing with more...gusto then the group im with were about 106 people and you are so much better but then again in our school the only good muscial grop is the band they won a couple of awards and the people in Choir are there cus there parents make em tho I kinda like singing tho so its kinda fun for me. damn I can never get the part from where it goes from "Hes a Conjur" and then goes up way high to "Haljeluh lord" :( o well your damn good

  • I love this song! Im in Madrigals too and we just started this song. It's a diffrent version though. Anyway, I really liked the women's section. Great job =)

  • does anyone have a more... well im not sure what the other version of it is called. the more gospel version of it perhaps? im learning the other version in my choir class right now and would like to be able to hear it on youtube to help me out.

  • Not bad for a high school choir. But there are definitely areas that could use improvement. For example, ol' girl moved her hair or scratched her face or something. That's a no no. But the sound decent. Breathy straight tones... to be expected of a majority ensemble, but it was cute for wat it was.

  • we did this in hs and it was awesome... got all 1's at contest and all.. yall sound awesome too!

  • hmm... you did just fine. your women are wondefully tuned! and your tenors are all on the same pitch at the end. how'd you do that? Congrats!

  • My high school's 120-voice Concert Choir performed this my senior year in 2002. This was after I begged my choir teacher to let us sing it. We took this county festival and to a national competition and we took home 1st place mainly because of this song. At the national competition the adjudicators asked us what the hell we were doing here?! They told us we should have been on tour lol.

  • this is a awesome song! well done.aweeesome altos.what else did you do from hogan?

  • This is a very good interpretation. I am a big fan of all Moses Hogan's choral writing. I performed this version twice in college, and I love it. The people leaving criticisms aren't as musically knowledgable as they'd like to think, and in my opinion you did a great job.

  • You guys did a good job, tough piece.

  • I love this song. My High School Chamber Choir is performing this at our final concert Monday night. I think sound good, maybe a little better than this. Maybe. We still need work though. I'm at Paul M. Dorman High School in South Carolina by the way, if anyone knows Lane Moore, he's the director.

  • sounds good.. okay tenors.. but i love the women...

    LAz.. whoo! moses hogan!

  • yay!

  • Great song! Is this the Moses Hogan version? Watch the rushing and some sliding to notes, otherwise great sound!

  • yeah, it IS moses hogan! oh, and it's actually a video of a video, so that might be why a couple things sound funny...thanks for the comment though :)

  • my choir sang this song a couple years ago... amazing song. we sounded 20934230948 times better, haha. but good job.

  • um...thanks? but it IS an awesome song...
