i use 30 dollars everyday for eating out. if i try this recipe and others on your channel i can save $1000 every month.easy, hope i will have the courage to cook
I always love your recipies. I have learned so much from you. Since I am not from indian origin I don't know so much about indian cooking. My question is what is the reason that one does not cook the lentils together with all the ingirdients like onion, spices... ?
Thank you for the response! I bought the ingredients today, and am excited to try you recipe..but if I do not have a pressure cooker, do you have any suggestions on how long I cook the lentils in a regular pan?
@0Expedition0 : Sorry for the late response, Think the lentils will take about 1-1.5 hours to cook. You will have to keep and eye on it and may have to add additional water as there is more evaporation.
Those lentils look a little darker raw than your average brown lentils...does yours have a specific name? What heat do I use if I am cooking without a pressure cooker?
I made this for dinner tonight...I had to tweak some of the ingredients, but it still came out great. Plus, I cooked some rice in my rice cooker and then added a bit to my bowl of lentil soup...WONDERFUL! yum yum :)
thak u that looks awesome... Just u were cooking and burning i remebered a day(some) human will be burning like this. My bro & sis plz dnt regect the word of God(Allah)
@midcitygym : Beans and legumes tend to cause flatulence and Asafoetoda (hing), helps with that. It is available at Indian grocery stores. If you can't find it, skip it - flavor-wise it's very minor .
@ShowMeTheCurry Or, better yet, soak the beans for 24hrs, rinsing them every few hrs. It help remove the indigestible complex sugars (oligosaccharides) from the outer coating of the beans. This is a large molecules which the human body is not able to break down because it lacks the necessary enzyme. Ultimately, the large intestine breaks the molecule down into gases...that you pass. So get rid of it by soaking, & you get rid of the problem:) It will makes beans/legumes more nutritious too!
@AnitasHealthBlog sorry meant to say, it's the sprouting that you can do after that soak that will make it more nutritious! I just sprouted some lentils for 4 days and they are so delicious! Light and crispy perfect for salads, but I'm making a soup in a slow cooker at the moment.
@ShowMeTheCurry ARE YOU SURE? IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE YOUR "PINCHING" IT LOOKS LIKE YOUR THROWING UP #6 GESTURE, MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY TO EMPHASIZE THE PINCH A BIT MORE
We are sorry you are having trouble with the audio but we can assure you that the problem is not on our side. We (and so many other viewers) are able to hear it just fine.
We used whole Masoor. We have not heard of anyone being allergic to asafoetida but please use your own discretion. Many Jains use it as a substitute for onion/garlic. It is also used as a digestive agent when cooking gassy beans/vegetables.
Hello, This looks great! Do you know if there is a certain kind of "spice blend" that I could use - and the amount - at least for some of the spices? I don't have any of these spices and I don't really want to buy all of those. Thank you for your help!
lentils are the bomb!!! you can make super nutritious and delicious soups with lentils. i like to add kale with my lentils....oh and garlic! yummy! for people who haven't tried lentils, they taste like peas and beans combined. it cooks fast too....
Just made this using leftover tomato paste instead of raw tomatoes and added an equal amount of carrot to the pan with the onions. Absolutely delicious and a great new healthy lentil recipe. Your recipes are a treasure. Thanks again.
Looks delicious! I don't know if I can find all the ingredients (the one that starts with an "a") though. Wow, you sure use a lot of garlic. I would probably leave out the lime and would add black pepper. I've never seen a pressure cooker that small.
looks deliiicious, would love to tear a piece of chapati and wet it in the soup! Actually i call it chapati but the one i eat is thicker & has 3-6 layers, don't know the name...
@ShowMeTheCurry Thanks! When i say 'paratha' no one has a clue what am on about but chapati... then everyone is an expert! This misnomer would probably make my grandma spin in her urn :)
I was looking for a recipe for this because my boyfriend, who is Lebanonese, had mentioned it was a healthy, filling dish full of protein because of the lentil itself. He had mentioned a similar recipe to yours, only instead of cilantro - could you use parsley? And, instead of red onion, would white onion be alright to use? Thanks for the recipe!
It is a VERY healthy dish! The cilantro can be replaced with parsley. Parsley has a different flavor, we have never tried to replace it but are sure it'll taste good :)
Red onions are a little stronger and sharper than the white ones. Again very eaily replaceable.
the parsley would give it a more familiar vegetable soup taste, but lentils spiced and seasoned with traditional Indian spices has a totally different flavor, but both taste good.
@cottoncandycocoon after the water has boiled and then lentils add it will take between 25-35 minutes depending on the heat you use. I've never had to cook them longer than 35 minutes. This is a much shorter time than cooking chickpeas/garbanzo beans, red beans, kidney beans, etc.
Asafoetida? It is a super pungent spice that is used very sparingly. It has a pretty unique flavor and is known to reduce the effects of gas in beans. However, if you don't have it, you can leave it out.
What is goin on with the sound for this video. The sound comes in in the beganning and then it is completely dead for the rest of the video and I am looking so forward to this recipe can u check it out
Great spicing. I'd like to add a curry leaf. What do you think, ladies? I'm growing curry plants here and have my fingers crossed they'll survive the mild winter.
Curry leaves would taste great in this soup. Btw...we grow curry plants as well (in a pot) so that we can bring them in the house, or garage, for the winter when they are dormant. They are sure to come back the next year.
Great recipe. I make this using Progresso's Lentil Soup instead of pressure cooking lentils from scratch. It makes for a quick lunch or dinner. The method is almost identical to what was done in this video. You would need to begin with step 3 in the method posted on the website. Do all of them the same way until step 8. Add in the soup, with liquid and stir. Then follow the steps after that the same way. Just boil for a minute or two longer, or as necessary. Usually no more than 5 minutes.
If you have soaked the lentils, they cook relatively fast (compared to other beans like kidney or garbanzo). A good estimate would be approx 2-3 mins per whistle. You may have to experiment with your cooker. You can always close it up again and re-cook if they have not cooked well.

@ShowMeTheCurry OR you can just take a "Beano" pill before eating the soup. It prevents your body from turning the bean/lentile into gas!

A friend suggested that I add Masala as a seasoning while sautéing the onions, ginger and garlic. Have you tried that before?

Yes, we do do that. It is best to finish sauteing the onions and then add the masalas so they don't burn.
