I'm amazed at the hyperbole on these posts! First, U2 would be the first to admit they're not The Beatles and wouldn't compare themselves to them. The Beatles are the greatest rockband ever whether you take their lyrics, musicianship, or arrangements by George Martin who had a classical music background and is considered one of the most innovative engineers ever. 2nd to say that U2 can't write a lyric is RIDICULOUS. I could take any song off The Joshua Tree or R&H to kill that argument!

@omersexy I think U2 has a complex that their music can't stand alone without all the glitz they use on their tours in stadiums. I think some of their best performances are stripped down like this Brooklyn Bridge show they did. They're really at their best when they just have a stage like this, and they connect with the audience. The ATYCLB tour was a good example of just good rocking.

If Bono has not written great lyrics then the listener either hasn't heard "One Tree Hill", "Moment of Surrender", "Walk On", "One" - to name a few of Bono's masterpieces - or the listener can't hear.

You don't survive this long in this industry at this level without an incredible blend of music and lyric.

Dazilla, U2 are far from the best band ever. After 35 yrs they've still to write a memorable lyric. Their success has largely been built on The Edge's unique guitar style.

I've seen U2 maybe twenty times. I first saw them before Boy was released and to this day my fav album is the least liked: October. I don't dispute Bono can write a lyric. Check out Mystery Girl by Roy Orbison. But U2 have never hit the heights their longevity merited. Not even come close, in fact.

I love this performance. Everything about it, the tempo, the energy, edge's tone, bono's voice, spot on. Much much better than most other versions around that time, like Slane, which sounds like a washed up rock star looking back on his past. This is more like a rock star embracing his past and doing it better. I wonder when the last time was bono actually sang "i was of the feeling it was out of control I had the opinion it was out of control" ?

I've heard other versions of Out of Control and instead of it feeling down, the energy and the tweaks on the lyrics made it seem like "OK. We're older now, we get where we were and who we were. We may have been a little over the top, but we're OK with that." And somehow the lyric about death felt defiant as ever. Entering my 40's I identify with the feeling. I may be getting older, but I'm still standing and I'll rock till the end

Saw them perform this in Dublin in 1980 - in a dance hall that held about 1000 (the TV club on Harcourt Street)! It was awesome in such a tiny venue - can still feel the hairs standing up on the back of my neck !

U2 is the best band to ever walk the Earth. 4 lads get together way back in 1976 and start something that has lasted for over 30 years and are still relevant, amazing and continue to reinvent and mold their music in incredible ways todays bands couldn't even dream about. We're lucky to have lived through the U2 years. No band, not even the "mighty" Beatles did what they have done. And, no band ever will. 30 + years?!?! It's INSANE!! No drama, no drugs, no line up changes, just music. GREAT music

Probably not. I think How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb was the closest thing they will come to their first album Boy. Rumour has made a new Achtung baby instead.. a completly new sound we haven't heard from them before.. Focus on the rhythms and songmelodies.. They spent a lot of time in northern Africa to "dream it all up again"..

I have no idea what "movie intermission" you're talking about, but this song is pretty damn good. Just think, Bono wrote this song as an 18-year old describing the loss of innocence. Any kid who can come up with the lyric: "One day I'll die, the choice will not be mine/Will it be too late? You can't fight fate" is genius. For someone to confront his own mortality at such a young age without sounding pretentious is truly someone who has a gift for songwriting.
