Brazilian fan. But even in the USA to have the privilege of free U2. In my country they would be assaulted and knocked to the ground. Do you have those that we lack civility. This they have until they did before in Los Angeles. Thank goodness they invented YouTube
I'm amazed at the hyperbole on these posts! First, U2 would be the first to admit they're not The Beatles and wouldn't compare themselves to them. The Beatles are the greatest rockband ever whether you take their lyrics, musicianship, or arrangements by George Martin who had a classical music background and is considered one of the most innovative engineers ever. 2nd to say that U2 can't write a lyric is RIDICULOUS. I could take any song off The Joshua Tree or R&H to kill that argument!
Jesus so simple performance but sounds so fucking good really i mean it ....i don't know why they spent all that money constructing claws and martinis they're music is good enough for their concerts well i guess that's what makes U2 well U2....w/e beautiful video..my fave band of all time..................................$U2
@omersexy I think U2 has a complex that their music can't stand alone without all the glitz they use on their tours in stadiums. I think some of their best performances are stripped down like this Brooklyn Bridge show they did. They're really at their best when they just have a stage like this, and they connect with the audience. The ATYCLB tour was a good example of just good rocking.
U2 is the only band i can think of thats lasted the longest years without losing its original members! Bono, Edge, Adam, Larry, all have been there since the birth of U2! U2's legacy will always live on!! LIVE ON!!!!
thanks for your very humble opinion> I still hate thebeatles, always have always will,They make my skin crawl, just like your stupid comment, that I need a slap.try it bitch.
If Bono has not written great lyrics then the listener either hasn't heard "One Tree Hill", "Moment of Surrender", "Walk On", "One" - to name a few of Bono's masterpieces - or the listener can't hear.
You don't survive this long in this industry at this level without an incredible blend of music and lyric.
Saying U2 hasn't writen a "memorable lyric" is like saying Ted Williams couldn't hit.
Evanelpus, agree to disagree but for me they're the greatest. A Sort of Homecoming, Please, Cedars Of Lebanon, there you go, just a few songs with great lyrics and there are many more.
Dazilla, U2 are far from the best band ever. After 35 yrs they've still to write a memorable lyric. Their success has largely been built on The Edge's unique guitar style.
I've seen U2 maybe twenty times. I first saw them before Boy was released and to this day my fav album is the least liked: October. I don't dispute Bono can write a lyric. Check out Mystery Girl by Roy Orbison. But U2 have never hit the heights their longevity merited. Not even come close, in fact.
I love this performance. Everything about it, the tempo, the energy, edge's tone, bono's voice, spot on. Much much better than most other versions around that time, like Slane, which sounds like a washed up rock star looking back on his past. This is more like a rock star embracing his past and doing it better. I wonder when the last time was bono actually sang "i was of the feeling it was out of control I had the opinion it was out of control" ?
@RattleAndHum1988 Hey there. I thought your analysis was spot on! I've heard other versions of Out of Control and instead of it feeling down, the energy and the tweaks on the lyrics made it seem like "OK. We're older now, we get where we were and who we were. We may have been a little over the top, but we're OK with that." And somehow the lyric about death felt defiant as ever. Entering my 40's I identify with the feeling. I may be getting older, but I'm still standing and I'll rock till the end
Definitely. It's supposed to be played fast. After all, the tune was originally recorded by 4 young kids who had an immense fire burning in their bellies.
I can see a whole new generation getting into old u2 with the unusual breaks in the songs. Those old songs are so cool. It seems like they should dust all of them off for radio.
this is the type of event they should release as package on cd or dvd. for many at any concert anywhere, there is just as many fans that cannot attend that really wish they could.
Hands down the best u2 footage since the unforgetable fire live at Red Rocks. That was so freakin sick. U2 freakin jams. And Bono was 16 again and I was 12..
U2 and The Police fans. I feel like at home. Love both bands. I think Stewart is more emotional, but Larry is always so concentrated. I would like to see him with a smile on his face, for example. I think they are very good drummers but too different
i got to disagree. i see where you are coming from and i LOVE the police, but Larry is just so raw yet the beat is still refined....he got serious talent! its the backbone of all their songs- where the real heartbeating power comes from. but thats just my opinon.
Saw them perform this in Dublin in 1980 - in a dance hall that held about 1000 (the TV club on Harcourt Street)! It was awesome in such a tiny venue - can still feel the hairs standing up on the back of my neck !
DAMN!! You're one lucky person to have seen them back in 1980! WOW! I'm jealous. I bet that was amazing. 29 years later and they're still at it and better than ever!
U2 is the best band to ever walk the Earth. 4 lads get together way back in 1976 and start something that has lasted for over 30 years and are still relevant, amazing and continue to reinvent and mold their music in incredible ways todays bands couldn't even dream about. We're lucky to have lived through the U2 years. No band, not even the "mighty" Beatles did what they have done. And, no band ever will. 30 + years?!?! It's INSANE!! No drama, no drugs, no line up changes, just music. GREAT music
@dajzilla spot on mate youre 100% right ! u2 are the best band of all time, yes the beatles have sold more records but when it comes down to playing live thers no contest ! the beatles were a cabaret act and not a live rock band
@dajzilla You got it! Amen to that! LOVE The Fab 4, my second favorite band ever. But in so many ways they weren't made of the same stuff as these "boys"...
wow, this sounds really good. don't look at the clip & you're right back there. the lack of audience response when edge plays the opening riff is disappointing, shows the young audience doesn't know; so blatant that bono has to explain to them what's going on.
I think the band is displaying a great bit of enthusiasm...considering. I love the Belfast video from 81 the most..but this is becoming one of my fav's.
Remember that they had been riding around the streets of New York on a flatbed truck performing for hours and hours immediately before this performance.
So, considering, they sound pretty damn good to me.
Probably not. I think How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb was the closest thing they will come to their first album Boy. Rumour has made a new Achtung baby instead.. a completly new sound we haven't heard from them before.. Focus on the rhythms and songmelodies.. They spent a lot of time in northern Africa to "dream it all up again"..
easily their best song and no wonder the conquered the world with this as their first single - better than 'love me do' - the Beatles' first effort? Answers on a postcard to the edge...

Such a shame that they have not written a song as good as since Achtung Baby. It's a testament to how good this song is 20+ years later. It overshines any of their newer stuff. I hate how Bono changes the song with jibberish, but that's just my opinion.
well zooropa and pop are amazing and the last 2 are still good but they're a lot more pop because I think they wanted to get a new audience but mate wait till their new one it'll be one of the greatest thing you'll hear in your lifetime just like acthung baby

i was there in the crowd i heard that u2 was playing dumbo that day and i dropped everything and raced there without a ticket and snuck in im the guy near the stage with the black cell phone in hand,it was amazing but it took them forever to come out
Love how Bono knows how to work the song at 3:15, by holding off The Edge after his solo to give the crowd a chance to feel the power of the song. Vintage U2 stuff right there, Lads!!!!
I have no idea what "movie intermission" you're talking about, but this song is pretty damn good. Just think, Bono wrote this song as an 18-year old describing the loss of innocence. Any kid who can come up with the lyric: "One day I'll die, the choice will not be mine/Will it be too late? You can't fight fate" is genius. For someone to confront his own mortality at such a young age without sounding pretentious is truly someone who has a gift for songwriting.
Movie intermission? WHAT? No way, this song is definately one of the most brilliant starting points that any band could have and still sounds great alongside their most recent work!
oh sorry lol on my youtube the comment didnt come up as a reply at first lol it just came up as a separate comment. Dno what it is about U2 they are just great.
man this is awesome! my fave U2 song (well this and windows in the skies) and can you imagine ANY other band having the integrity to perform a song they write at 18 like this??
I dont know if there's people in the audience that are the same age as theirs? Its amazing, their almost 30 year old song speaks to a whole new generation :-)
the elevation tour live at slane castle, that's the best version, he talks like they are a new band and he ask god for 500 pounds to go to london and score a record deal, very emotional
He talks about when he asked his father for 500 pounds for a record deal in London. He also says that Edge's mother and father, Mullen's father and Clayton's family also gave 500 pounds each.
i have always loved the part towards the end from the mellow to "out of control!!!!!" it just gives me chills. this has gotta be the best version or might be 2nd at slane castle's version at the elevation tour, yah?! i suggest u watch it, same chills man!!!
I just watched the video and i got the same feeling..I love the old stuff but i love the new stuff to come...The new u2 album will give you dreams of love and hope with alittle punk..Wait and see..cbono

WHAT? No way, this song is definately one of the most brilliant starting points that any band could have and still sounds great alongside their most recent work!

the elevation tour live at slane castle, that's the best version, he talks like they are a new band and he ask god for 500 pounds to go to london and score a record deal, very emotional
polancojoel 4 years ago
He didn't ask God, he asked his father.
morkart 4 years ago
God doesn't usually give money.
Or there'd be no point in Bono campaigning against poverty now would there lol
ToulacAxeHand 4 years ago
He talks about when he asked his father for 500 pounds for a record deal in London. He also says that Edge's mother and father, Mullen's father and Clayton's family also gave 500 pounds each.

this and the Croke Park video are almost more enjoyable than the clips from 81 and Red Rocks. Stunning performances of a 30 year old song

I wonder why the Edge wasn't doing the back up vocals...coz I really enjoy his part in the song!
