That term was formed because Plumbers usually wear jeans with a t-shirt that doesn't cover their backside when they bend over to work on the kitchen sink. last I heard, Farmers wear overalls. I could be wrong though. Maybe plumbers finally updated their wardrobe. But I heard of that term since the 70's.
