damn i love jeff healey he is an astounishing talent that could never be replaced everybodys upsessed with fucking stevie wonder cause he's blind i personally think his music sucks and he could never be as talented as jeff ... jeff plays the guitar upside down and solos that way that's why you could never immulate his style his truely is a one of a kind and i wish he was alive today to see how shity music got and how much respect people r getten over him it's not fair...
I Knew a little about Jeff's music, but the more I hear and see I come to realize what a treasure this man was and is. I am thankful for his inspiration and courage.
Outstanding, man do I miss him. He was a great artist and just a nice, down to earth guy. It seems unfair to be taken from us so soon, but what a legacy he has left us blues lovers. It has been said heaven has one hell of a band, show 'em how it's done Jeff, and rest in peace mate your music will never die.
Mate, sheer brilliance, & if anyone questions it, they must have worse vision than Jeff himself ! He is brilliant, to achieve more than most of us all put together and especially the way he did is nothing short of genius & its a damn reality check for all of us to achieve our own goals. He was a mate to all of us musically, coz we all share the same passion.
Jeff could hang with anybody on any stage, so sad he's gone. As a guitar teacher for 45 years I still don't understand how played with the guitar in his lap. Fortunately for Jeff no one told him you can't do that.
I sat on a streetcar seat as I watched the driver escort Jeff of the car. It was at Spadina station agout about 10 years ago. To this day I wish I had jumped up to assist. I was simply in shock that he was on the same streetcar as I was. I regret not taking the opportunity to say, "thanks for the great music!". We miss you Jeff.
Jeff Healy was a fantastic musician, a style of his own and could just blow me away with his hard edged Blues and Rock. He was a great loss to the music industry and Blues together, thanks Jeff for sharing your talent, hope there's a stage in the big house for ya !

Man, with all this fuss about what an insane guitar player Jeff is, his piano player sometimes goes unnoticed, which is a crime, because he's SOOOO GOOD! ... Not to say that Jeff isn't a beast though, lol.
This was one of the things that just pissed me off about 2007. Not only was Jeff Healey one awesome and unique guitarist, but he was also a very respectful, personable and approachable people in an industry that is chock full of prima donnas and, I dare say, assholes. It was one of life's cruel little twists that Jeff got dealt the hand that he did, and we are all a little bit worse off now that he is gone, all we can be glad for is the library off great music he left behind for us to enjoy.
Sadly Canadian Jeff Healey died from cancer in 2008 just before his 42nd birthday (I think). He started playing guitar at an early age, but became blind after his eyes had to be removed due to a rare genetically inherited form of eye cancer named retinoblastoma. If you ever saw the film "Roadhouse" starring Patrick Swayze, you will have seen Jeff Healey playing behind a fence in a really rough bar/club. The overhand playing was obviously just the way he learned guitar.
Jeff is blind moseseseses thats why he has to sit down although I have seen him standing playing. Absolutely awesome guitarist, I just LOVE this bands music
one nite jeff healey did one show at a small bar in my small town. jeff was my hero I got to stand five feet from him as he wailed out the most gigantic sounds I have ever. He did a solo lasted about 15 min.was like hearing Bach back in his time such profound understanding of what he wanted to play...such a deep intuative knowledge of his craft. Sorry he had to go but isn't that always what happens to the great ones. God so selfishly wants them jamming in "HIS" bar! Miss ya buddy.
This is the first time I have ever heard or seen him. Why is he sitting down playing the guitar as he is? Please, some one tell me. I have never heard a lead guitarist, or seen one sitting down like this before. I wish the camera were on his fingers, so we could see how he is picking those notes. He looks like he is playing a steel guitar, but yet it looks like an ordinary guitar. This is strange to my eyes, please someone explain this to me.
Jeff is (was) totally blind from eye cancer since he was very young. He taught himself to play the guitar that way. He died last year. Great, Great musician
Moses -- listen to all the Jeff Healey you can. He was left blind by some type of ocular cancer when he was around 2 years old. He learned to play with the guitar flat on his lap, so he could play with all 5 fingers (including thumb, of course) instead of just 4 the conventional way. He was a true genius and even all-time greats like Clapton marveled at his playing. Cancer finally took him, but not before he left many great songs and videos to enjoy.
Jedd was blind from 2 years old from having his eyes removed due to cancer in them.
He learnt guitar himself and preferred playing on his lap, he played a modified Squire "strat" mostly. Being blind was NOT the reason for playing opn his lap, there have been many blind guitarists who played conventionally, arguably none as exciting as jeff, but there you go! God, may you rest in peace Jeff
Oh my goodness mosese, i almost envy you, because now you get to experience the powerful blues magic of Jeff Healey for the first time. Buddy, YOU are in for a REAL TREAT, this man is second in my book only to SRV, ENJOY!!!!!
I love all kinds of music and I still discover wonderful gems I hadn't come across before. Tonight I found this guy on you tube and thought I wonder if he's touring...I was saddened to see he'd checked out far to early.
God bless you man when it comes for my turn to pass over I'll definately be wandering along to see ya !
that's how most people came to know him...patrick and sam elliot actually argued to get him the part and the rest is......too bad too soon.....luv him still......
always remember the school horn band that used to come to our high school in the late 70's, in the auditorium. Young kid was with the band, sitting down playing the guitar. Strange, I thought, he must have been blind, or something - never thought much more of it. Til a decade later.. it was Jeff Healey
One of the greatest blues musicians of our times. He left us far to soon but his music will live on forever. My gal had thr privilidgeof meeting Jeff on many occassions and won over her heart with his late night jamming sessions with friends, which usually lasted into the early mornings.
A pure genius Blues Musician. One of my favourites that left us too soon. My girl had the privlidge a while to meet Jeff and still tells me how great he was as a musician, but also as a human being.
He was one of the greatest Blues musicians of all times. His legend and music will last forever. Sadly missed but never forgotten, My girls favourite Blue player of all times and she had the privlidge of meeting this genius of music.
Good News. The other guitarist that plays the solo after first verse is still alive. I have seen him live with the "Jeff Healy Band" in Toronto and Jeff gave him a lot of spotlight. They obviously loved playing together. That string slinger is Philip Sace and he has seriously impressive chops. Also saw his band live and they smoke.
This is no replacement for Jeff. All I'm saying is; there is no blues vacuum.
On January 11, 2007, Healey underwent surgery to remove metastatic tissue from both lungs. In the previous eighteen months, he had two sarcomas removed from his legs.[2]
On March 2, 2008, Healey died of cancer[3] at St. Joseph's Health Centre in his home town of Toronto. He was 41.[4] His death came a month before the release of his album, Mess of Blues, which was his first rock/blues album in eight years.[5]
Neek...agree...a real treasure...a great blues artist but also a great historian of trad jazzz. His "My Kinda Jazz" show from JazzFM in Toronta was a master's course...saw him at his club, the SouthSide Shuffle in Port Credit and various venues around T.O...the good die young...
Healey was talented. I wished he had been given more exposure in the media. A movie of his life would be great. I wonder what actor could play him? Blind since 3, and what a self made man he was. Sang great, too. Seems the good always die young.
I really liked to ask him questions about will power! and why he placed guitar like this, Y'know it was not necessary for a blind to place it this way, but he managed in the hard way after all...and brilliant.
Jeff was an amazing talent. His recordings were great - especially his last "Mess of Blues". However there was nothing like seeing him LIVE in his club. These YouTube videos come as close as you can without actually being there. Thanks.
great music.guys amazing.nice he had guts to show his talent 1in million most would give up drove himself in music.senses better has to sound clear still how play guitar blind.genious.still had a great life i couldnt say same.rock on in your heaven god bless.
What a guy Ive been a big fan for years and got to see him live in nottingham england a couple of months before he passed,It was a unreal gig mainly because the show was meant to be in a large venue called rock city but was moved round the block to a small venue of about 200 people! i got to stand infront of him all night about 2 meters away it was sureal and i'll never forget it,he was amazing and i'm a lucky guy to have seen him.
thanks for posting this, the memories came flooding back.peace J
such a guitar hero!!! one of my main influences as a guitar player! RIP jeff... and to think he must have been so incredably ill at this gig, he is on fire!! both vocals and guitar playing, and what an AWESOME guitar tone!!!! :O love this vid!! :D
Thankyou for posting this. When you synced the footage to the album did you have to adjust the timing of the video or edit it? Cause the syncing is very good, and the performance must have been very close to the album recording.
In 1984, myself and a buddy went to see a Hendrix tribute band called "FIRE" with Tony Springer (Wild T and the Spirit)at THE GASSWORKS in Toronto. This blonde haired blind guy sat and played air guitar with me to a Hendrix tune. He was feeling no pain like me. He had a ton of laughs. When the band finished their set, he said "I'm going to jam with those guys" and got up and left. I said to myself "what a dreamer".next set-out he came. WOW...A MEMORY I WILL NEVER FORGET.
There has never been, and will never be, anyone like Jeff Healey. Truly he was put on this Earth to do exactly what he is doing here. This is the best version of this song, guitar and vocals, that I have ever heard and I have heard a bunch of them.
Thank you for putting this together. I am on vacation this week and can't afford to go anywhere or do anything. By making this video available for me to watch about 10 times a day you have made my vacation. God Bless Jeff and his family.
I met him once for like five minutes when I was living with some friends in Canada. He was totally sweet. *sigh* He was my pubescent crush when Angel Eyes came out. It was nice to know I still feel a total crush when I met him 10 years later. He was a great guitar player, total cutie, and totally missed. R.I.P. Jeff
I read that Jeff learned to play this way because he started playing when he was only 3 years old and was too small to hold the guitar normally. I got to meet Jeff one night and he got up for an impromptu jam. He could play the guitar in the conventional way as well, the way most people would. He will be greatly missed.
Thats just so fucking amazing how that man with no sight found all that joy and music in his instrument, he played like a king! RIP cause you will always be in my heart Jeff!

may RIP jeff,
great artist and human being indeed.
what a life and destiny...
never had a chance to see him live. pity.

Thanks.

In most other bands, that other (really good!) picker could easily by the star. But not in this one.

One regret I have is never seing Jeff live. He was a true inspiration to other guitarist like myself and will be missed.
tomsholt 3 years ago
Thankyou for posting this. When you synced the footage to the album did you have to adjust the timing of the video or edit it? Cause the syncing is very good, and the performance must have been very close to the album recording.
nowendoc 3 years ago
All this footage was taken the night of the album recording so it syncs very easily.

R.I.P. Jeff

hedges2 3 years ago
So why is he playing the guitar down on his lap? Is that something to do with blindness, like easier to play?
creamyfilling102 3 years ago
I assume its because he couldn't see the traditional way of holding the guitar he was playing and found it comfortable to play across his lap.
Its as if you learned to play guitar with your feet, Its possible just yo probably couldn't play with your hands
LedHead1991 3 years ago
I read that Jeff learned to play this way because he started playing when he was only 3 years old and was too small to hold the guitar normally. I got to meet Jeff one night and he got up for an impromptu jam. He could play the guitar in the conventional way as well, the way most people would. He will be greatly missed.

I had goosebumps after the first few notes. What a powerful player. I didn't know that he had passed, and tears came to my eyes.
I saw him back in 1991, and he was just amazing.
