Melbourne is epitimised in this wonderful ad the Gold Coast should also try to find its spirit. Most of the other tourist promotions for Australis are embarrassing - too nationalistic- we are the greatest syndrome- they need to be subtle as in this ad
@alebb2 I wondered that too. It looked to me like St Patrick's cathedral in the background so I took a look on Google maps. The place is behind St Patrick's in what would be the backyard I guess, between Albert Street and Cathedral place. Looks nice :)
thing is though, its still full of skyscrapers and shit, it shows stuff all of the actual city, ant the string is just stupid. SA's West End Draught "beer karma" response add to this is classic. South Australia FTW
What I really like about this ad is that there are scarce use of landmarks in it, save maybe the trams. Just goes to show how a city doesn't need to have striking landmarks to sell itself, i.e. Sydney Opera House & Harbour Bridge.
Where are the footy bogans, the horrid yellow brick mcmansions, the arsehole tram inspectors and the endless urban sprawl? Is this really supposed to be Melbourne?
this chick is also in the just cars ad and the vodofone one 'because i do' as well.... she looks surpisingly similiar to one of my friends. Wish i knew who it was.
I love the ad, and thanks to all who have supplied details of the track - but who is the beautiful actress? I think she's also in a recent Vodaphone ad...
I've seen this ad play in my own beloved city, I love Melbourne :) This is actually an extention of the CityLights Project ads, too. Same string, same girl.
As an Urban Planner and Designer this ad is perfect, effectively positioning Melbourne on a human scale and showcasing the romantic connotations of city life.
The absence of any "...real land marks..." sets this ad apart. It explains that Melbourne is a place to visit to for original experiences as opposed to a city featuring masses of concrete soaring into the sky.
A beautiful and old concept, a classy rendition of the laberynth myth, not a maze where you simply get lost but a laberynth where you find something about yourself, or others, a treasure that gifts you something more than when you came in. Fantastically set to one of the most charming songs on Joanna Newsom's debut "Milk Eyed Mender" . Very moving.
Okay, a few of us may have gotten that. But why is what she finds so f-ing trite? It's like a Macy's ad in that respect. Plus, in this case, the "clewe of twine" just seems to represent a heavy load she must bear.
i love this ad. My favorite at the moment. Love the song, very fitting. And the idea of the giant ball of string. I would never have guessed that the ad was promoting tourism in Australia. lol. Anyhow, its cute and im off to download the song. haha. and i do agree the singer is similar to bjork.
I am soo sorry, but in best cities in Australia, the order goes Sydney, followed by Melbourne then proberly Perth then Brisbane. When i was in Brisbane in July 07, i was shocked at how many racist and rude people lived there!
Gee your smart Sodiuml, considering Melbourne has ranked Number 1 most livable city 3 years running, 2nd to vancouver atm. Sydney Is only the biggest city, not the best city.
OMG!! How right you are. It's making us look like lunatics! And any decent person knows melburnians are clever. I guess it's trying to show the vibrance and culture.
Annoying and contived.

Its not going to be the biggest for long. We're (Melbourne) supposed to be overtaking them, population-wise, pretty soon.

since listening to the ad i heard other songs of joanna newsom and she is quite a unique talent.
Incredible harpist... her voice reminds me of bjork...although bjork would blast her off the planet.
