The "T" stands for teeth, or, the number of teeth in the chainring. So a 34T bashguard will cover and protect up to 34 tooth chainrings. A 40T bashguard would protect up to 40 tooth chainrings. It's wise to get a bashguard that's closest to the chainring size used. So while a 40T bashguard would work with a 32 tooth chainring, you're losing ground clearance that you could have, and adding unnecessary weight. Does this help?
You have the Salsa tooth Fairy Triple then correct? Yes, you will be able to do this with your new crank. However, you will probably need new bolts, or need to use the old bolts from your Cannondale crank.
Just keep in mind that by adding the Triple bash guard, you are lowering your ground clearance. If you don't use your largest chainring very often, I would suggest removing in in favor of a standard bashguard- thus increasing your clearance and taking some weight off.
I used to have a Cannondale Super V 700 (the one with the huge moto shocks) and I used a Salsa Tooth Fairy on it without having to remove the largest chainring. Is this something that is particular to Cannondale or will I be able to do the same with my K2 Zed2.0 (Lasco Alloy 24/34/42T crankset)
what does 34t mean in a bashguard description?
