big ben is not the clock tower big ben is the sound of the hour bell it started service in 1859 the hour bell was made in the whitchapel foundry it cracked so for 3 years the hour bell tolled on the 3 quarter chime it was in service all through the second world war it had a brief stoppage in 1944 the longest the clock was out of service wAS IN 1976 when the chiming cord snapped and bits of the workings were embedded in the wall it was out for a total of 176 days

Big ben was originally the nick-name for bell, but the name Big Ben is now associated with the clock tower. Theres no law against calling it Big Ben. If people want to call it that let them. I do, more of a "ring" to it than "St. Stephen's tower". ;)

Ahhh, music to my ears, especially when I watch it in high-quality mode. I love the Great Clock and the sounds of the Big Ben bell.

I am also a fan of the photos taken from inside the clock tower, provided by UK Parliament on the Flickr website. Most of them are extremely high-res, and HUGE in file and pixel size. The clarity, though, is not all that great on some of the shots.

I'd love to go to London someday, though I doubt if I could ever afford the trip.
