Almost totally a cover of the version of the one by Bettye Swann, close but no cigar. I have an LP of Dusty Springfield in Memphis and this number isn't on it.
Anybody familiar with Mexican music knows that the late Rocio Durcal is known as the "most Mexican of the Spaniards." She was from Spain yet conquered traditional Mexican Ranchera music in a way that few Mexicans could. Well, I have to say Dusty deserves a similar title, the "most American of the Brits" for her remarkable ability to interpret purely American themes in a way that rivals that of actual American artists. Mimicry or not, you can't help but sit back and marvel at her genius!
It is a brilliant performance but ultimately disappointing. Why did they cut the last verse?? It's the whole point of the song! The narrator bumps into Willie years later in town and invites him over... but Willie just stares at the ground saying, That was another place and another time.
Heart Wrenching how the city life had split the two old buddies coz of their race.
@weightfeather1 My bad.. Lol I did look as well but to no avail. I guess that's just wishful thinking on my behalf, or maybe that Gentry covered Son of a Preacher Man that had me confused!

@weightfeather1 btw, Thank You for being so nice. Alot of the people on You Tube would have jumped down my throat for such a faux pas.

I love this version of Willie and Laura Mae. Dusty convinces me that she is a black girl trapped in a British girl's body
