  • THIS FILM FAILS BECAUSE THEY FORGOT TO INCLUDE SOME CAR CHASE SCENES...

  • Why does this guy remind me of Ron Pearlman...?

  • Poor guy!

  • @searskyl I think it's to prevent him from eating his hands off.

  • What are the things on Waits fingers?

  • I notice that Renfield bites him on the left side, but the doctor grabs the right side of his neck..fail!

  • Wow Tom Waits FTW.

  • I was so excited when I found out tom waits played as renfield, I only found this out recently, and I am a massive fan of tom waits and have been listening to a lot lately, then I started reading the original dracula book a few weeks ago and then I find this out! :D

  • I thought Tom Waits was brilliant as Renfield. Great musician and a great actor, often underrated in both areas.

  • I loved how Mike Mignola captured Tom Waits in the comic version.

As to say who is better... Both. They both make me laugh and it's just so hard when you see Frye and Waits act over the top. XD

  • @ZannyRamone Dwight Frye is wicked better than Tom Waits. He is so awesome. :)

  • Imo a bad renfield, Dwight Frye is 100 times better!

  • Congrats on the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction. Tom! :)

  • Waits is a badass!

  • Seriously Richard, you got bitten on the right side of your neck haha

  • I hate how they kinda ruined the Renfield scenes. In the books, they were genuinely scary and mysterious, but here... The whole back and forth between them about Renfield wanting a cat is completely different in the book.

  • @Danthepest1 actually they arent that different at all from the book (which i am currently reading) including the way seward has to invent a new neurosis title for renfield or his want of a cat and the mention of sparrows. yes of course its different, very rarely is a movie adaptation exactly like the book. but just because its not like the book doesnt mean its bad, i love tom waits's portrayal of renfield! that being said the movie all together kinda sucks because of ryder and reeves.

  • @troublesaway I like the way Tom Waits portrayed the character, but Renfield's scenes and conversations had a different context than it has in the film. I dunno, Renfield was one of my favourite characters and it just seems he's either the butt monkey in every film or they never get him right. I'm not looking for a perfect adaptation, but just have Renfield genuinely scary and mysterious as in the book.

  • @Danthepest1 i agree about the context issue, and understand yr point of view, renfield is definitely darker in the book (which is awesome by the way!) i havent seen all the adaptations but his part in nosferatu was kinda dinky, but that was still a great movie, but, since yr not satisfied with the film versions of renfield, maybe you should make yr own! ill support that!

  • richard E. grant and tom waits should have a sitcom together.....i have to see that before i die!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Horror novel see video book trailer

  • I never realised this was Tom Waits. You learn something new every day!

  • what are the things Renfield's hands are in?

  • this seen is better in the book

  • 1:57 Awww.....someone needs a hug.

  • All Santa Monica Students!

This guy totally looks like Lawrence Driscoll! How funny!

  • To me Gary Oldman and Tom Waits were the best actors in the movie. That storm scene of Dracula turning into a wolf, landing in Whitby, and attacking Lucy all while Renfield is in one of his mad rants is a REALLY epic scene. The only flaw was Waits wasn't in it long enough and I think Dracula's numerous romantic moments made him less sinister than he originally was (he cried purple tears). Most of the other actors were so so except for Reeves who was just awful. But Waits and Oldman saved it.

  • @balrog13571 Reeves is always awful :P. But he kind of fits this character

  • @couvegalega

Well to each his own but I don't see how. In the book Harker REACTS to the crazy things he sees in the castle. Now ignoring the fact that in the movie he never reacts to Dracula going at him with a sword and seeing his shadow remaining in place for a second after Dracula moves or how the doors just open on their own, you'd think he'd react to seeing him crawling down the castle like a lizard and seeing perfume drops going UP! His face never changes though until the baby scene.

  • @balrog13571 Wait...what? He cries pourple tears?

  • @phantompersian

Yep. After Mina gives him a letter saying they must never see each other again he's crying purple tears and sobbing like a high school student after a break up. I get that in some versions like this they try to show a more tragic side to him, but while the 1973 and 1979 ones had him as a lover, he was still a dark menacing monster 24/7. Once he first meets Mina it starts to feel like watching a soap opera half the time. It's still a good movie, but the tears are a step down.

  • @balrog13571 Wait...he cries purple tears?

  • @balrog13571 If you recall, when he read the goodbye letter from Mina, he cried drops of purple fluid, which landed upon the letter...

  • @Discoesque

Yeah I know and it still looked ridiculous.

  • MASTER OH MASTER OOOOHHHH

  • He is absolutely brilliant as Renfield. His interpretation from Stoker's book is the most accurate I think - compared with the 1930s it's definitely less contrived, it's more natural and fluid.

  • He is absolutely brilliant as Renfield. His interpretation from Stoker's book is the most accurate I think - compared with the 1930s it's definitely less contrived.

  • I'm playing him in our college play haha!

  • thanks for uploading! that's exactly the scene I wanted to watch right now,

...without going to my shelf and get the DVD, insert it in my Computer... etc. (lazy...)

  • Very good....but Dwight's the best.

  • The best accent and character of the film.

  • Tom Waits is brilliant in this as Renfield best one yet.

  • Tom Waits FTW

  • I luuuurve Tom Waits, he's a genius :)

  • I can only understand every 2nd word Tom Waits is saying...

  • @FuckWorkdays You don't need to. He's that awesome.

  • @SwampDaddy7 I prefer Dwight Freye

  • @FuckWorkdays Not that bad of a Renfield.

  • Tom is a great guy OUT of character, they picked a great actor to play him!

  • Renfield's been watching too much Doctor Who. He's just lucky Dracula fits the Master's description.

  • aw man, i never noticed Renfeild was Tom waits! I was too young when I saw this movie. :(

  • Enjoying this movie is always a conundrum of mathematics for me...but Reeves and Ryder always seem to swallow up all I love about this movie and change my mind about watching it.

  • Tom Waits is incredible in this but the best Renfield is still Peter MacNicol.

  • he bites him on the right side but hes grabs the left

  • hands down the best! waits is genius and you know he had fun doing this....like he was in his own character.....

  • to me this version of dracula was by far the best ever, all those others such as dracula 2000 was a bunch of crap. love never dies told the whole story and I will watch it again and again.

  • Tom Waits was the only good part of that movie. It's weird, so many talented people collaborated on something that sucked so much. No pun intended.

  • Ugh, this movie was such a turd.

But Tom Waits is always great. It's a shame he's not in more films.

  • I like Tom Waits, but my allegiance will always lie with Dwight Frye. You can't go wrong with that horrifyingly endearing grin and that adorable thousand-watt stare.

One thing: I thought it was typically the patients they had wearing head-cages, not the staff.

  • @ZannyRamone Dwight Frye's Renfield was too changed for me to enjoy. Giving him Harker's role at Castle Dracula was a mistake in my book. But he did a fair job. Waits portrayed him much more faithfully.

  • "I shall have to invent a new classification of the lunatic for you."

Yes, waitsophrenia! Fearless genius and uncontrollable mirth!

  • Oh Renfield, what have they done to you? What the fuck went wrong?!

  • Let's get back to the subject. Mr Waits. A marvelous performance. Worthy of Oscar Levant, Jonathan Winers, Victor Borge, Rodney Dangerfield class. That Tod McFarlane toy figure company that did the Bram Stoker McToys Dracula and many original odd fellows in extreme detail made a big mistake not doing this Tom Waits Renfield. (as both before and after) Folks would have killed (and eaten) for a Tom Waits Renfield. Dumb.

  • The blockheads from Gumby FTW!

  • We're doing the play Dracula at our school.

I got the part of Renfield.

    YES!

  • ha so did i..ours is a comedy

  • Haha ours should be a comedy.

I'm a chick, and the director wants me to continuously hit on the other female leads. :)

I guess Renfield is a roaring lesbian?

  • I'm doing the play of Dracula as well! What school are you from? I got Renfield as well!

  • YES!

YOU'RE MY BFF FROM NOW ON!

    lmao

I go to a ghetto little school in Texas. :)

When do you guys perform? We just had our performances on the 23rd. Break a leg!

  • YOUR ONE OF MY BEST BUDS TO! :D

I'm from Utah at Layton High School and I perform this November 11-21. :)

  • I'm so sorry please believe me my little brother had his account on Gibberling13 is really my message. That is meant to you I'm so sorry!

  • BFF'S!!!

Why do you guys perform so much? We only have two performances, but three months of rehersals. :(((

And lol I believe you! :P

  • That's frustrating. :( I'm so sorry. Well the play is double casted. But I've done a show where it was 3 months and we still had alot of performances. I'm also doing the High School Musical which is The Wedding Singer musical. In the Dracula play its a small play for a certain time. Weird huh?

Maybe you had so many months to get to know the cast and get to really feel for the character and be the character. I'm sure your a better Renfield than me. :)

  • Out director was a butt, though. So I'm sure your performances were waaaaay better. :)

    YOU'RE DOING THE WEDDING SINGER?

I'm going to your school! We're doing South Pacific this year. :(

Nah. We had long rehersal times because the director is a nazi, LMAO

And I don't know about that. I'm a chick and there was a scene where I had to hit on Lucy. That was pretty akward scene, lol. (Renfield is a lesbo now, I guess)

  • HOLY HELL YES.

  • Best. Renfield. Ever.

  • In highschool I made a mixed tape of all Mr Renfield's lines in this movie. We would smoke pot, put in in, and laugh our asses off.

  • How could any self respecting actor make such a blatant mistake, grabbing the wrong side of the neck?

    That... that was unforgivable.

  • Tom Wait's performance was the only salvation for this scene. They completely changed and ruined the whole creepy/mystery vibe from the bbook

  • I agree. It seems almost perfect that he is the crazy man in the movie.

  • WTF?

  • He does a pretty good accent. Better than Keanu Reeves' anyway.

  • @fugnut i agree...with keanu reeves you half expect him to go dracula! duuuuuude!

  • @fugnut

Keanu was only truly good in one movie. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. It's all been downhill since then.

  • @fugnut

    that's pretty much a given

  • Poor Renfield. That "asylum" seems like a nice place. Or not.

  • Notice how Dr. Seward is holding the wrong side of his neck at the end. Another error of the movie besides the hat scene at the party.

  • great performance

  • Today I attended a theatre workshop at my graduate university on mold-making for stage props, and it was led by our shop supervisor who in the past has made props for films. One of those films was Bram Stoker's Dracula, for which he made nearly 800 edible insect props for Tom Waits.
