  • Mineral spirits work also as a non-flammable indoor friendly alternative to kerosene

  • @claing17 you are right but I had 10 gallons of kerosene in the shop but no mineral spirits so I used what I had.

  • So this begs the question.

What happens if you throw a f*cking match into the tote (provided it was fireproof). Maybe I'm just giddy that I'm holding my new nugget, but it seems to me that it would ignite the cosmoline along with the kerosine and it'd just be a matter of wiping off the soot. o.O

  • Kerosene does wonders for stuck antique sewing machines also - to make it a little easier and use less kerosene I use a piece of 4 inch pvc pipe capped on one end for the barrel to soak in, plus you can run a brush through while submerged for added cleaning.

  • Put the parts into an oven and melt them off. It will ruin the oven but hey, it's for the 2nd amendment.!

  • @glennwih yes that works great my wife will shoot me if I did that and I dont have an oven at the moment in the man cave.

  • did you have any Cosmoline inside the barrel ? and what about the wood ?

  • @anemalxj yes i switched ends in the tub and soaked overnight cleaned right out with like 70 patches. lol as for the wood I switched stocks so I didnt do the wood. Best way is to sweat it out in the sunlight and wipe down every hr or so or use a mild soap and set it over a tub of hot water (really hot) and the steam will rise the cosmo to the surface just wipe and scrub. dont want to submerge in water.Ill try to pm you a vid that might help. works good to steam small dents out as well.

  • kerosene GOT IT That took 2 seconds . not 7:03

  • @peterm3964 yes but I bet it takes you longer than 2 seconds to clean all the cosmoline out of a firearm. say at least 7:03 or probably longer.

  • I just used a similar method on my mil-surp gun. Instead of kerosene I used 1 QUART DX330 ACRYLI-CLEAN PPG. Luckily my bn was able to contain the length of my barrel. For the small parts I let it soak in my cleaner for 15 minutes then submersed them in boiling water for another couple minutes (repeated if necessary). All of the cosmoline was removed from the entire gun in less than an hour.

  • don't bubba the rifle man! leave the barrel alone!

  • its incredable how much cosmoline there is in a rifle but realy liked the video might get a mosin nagant and i might just use that method thanks man

  • Anything to do with firearms is never boring brother. Great job.

  • The metal is the easy part. The wood stocks are so full of cosmoline. I leave my stock sit out in 90 degree weather and you can see the cosmoline seeping out of the wood.

  • @MuscIeBound yea the wood is a whole nother beast in itself. Crud cutter or dawn works good after a good sit in a sunny dat wrapped in paper sacs. since I will be installing the action into a aftermarket stock I didnt go trough the process. Probably will when I restore one.

  • My Dad used kerosene to clean and degrease tractor and vehicle parts. He even used it on my foot when I cut myself pretty bad. Thanks for sharing

  • Good video Will, the Desert Eagles from Isreal came over with cosmoline on them, any gun ship over seas needs that becase of the salt water air.

  • Just don't smoke while you do this. LOL

  • What is the gun you are working on? Just curious. Good video!

  • @TheEltopian mosin nagant

  • ★★★★★

  • Well i don't think i'll ever get to do that but its good to know!!!! Learning is everything :), thanks for showing us how my good buddy from accross the sea!!

  • Looking forward to seeing it finished. I'm trying to find a project sks to have some fun with. Take care.

  • And Kero you can always reuse for other cleaning projects ....cool

  • Thanks for posting man. Been considering a mosin this will come in handy.

  • coming along nice brother.....

  • Alright cool now I know thx

  • @Acefearkiller no problems. I hope you enjoy the build.

  • I have heard of people doing vids like this ,but I'm wondering is it absolutely necessary to remove that stuff.?

  • @Acefearkiller yep. if you have ever had to slam the bolt open of closed on a milsurp you will understand. like tar in the action. it was used for storage to keep weapons from rusting.

  • @Acefearkiller plus to refinish you have to totaly degrease or the finish I am going to apply will not stick. lol that would just look terrible.

  • Just warm the parts up in the oven and the cosmoline runs right off into a puddle.

  • @williethegimp yep that works good as well. but the wife wouldnt like that too much and I aint seen an oven big enough to put this barrel in. I thought I could fit it in the tote. boy was I wrong. glad I gonna shorten up the bbl a bit. lol

  • @willwood487 Good point! She'll understand if you do the dishes... but that's getting pretty close to what you're doing in this video anyway!

  • @williethegimp lol.it does smoke up the house and stink a bit. If you are going to do it that way make sure she is gone away for the wkend! lol

  • I like using brake cleaner. Its a little harsh but only takes a few seconds.Good idea with the clear tote.
