The problem with selling information is that humanity is a social species.

You would have better luck selling data to intelligent space lizards who only come into contact with one another to mate if you hope for it not to be shared.

The selling of information should be about the service. If it is less of a hassle to pirate something, then why would anyone pay to aquire what they know is already free?
