Hi I have this exact pc sitting around because it stopped working years ago and I'm thinking it's the power supply as it won't turn on and makes a buzzing or static sound every 5th attempt or so. Is that normal for a bad power supply? Also is the ram maxed at one or two gigs? I would like to get to get it running again even if it's just fir smething to do in my spare time. Thanks in advance!
@tlcphi2 The power supply in this computer did not make any sounds when turned on. It did not do anything. I guessed that the power supply was no good. This was comfirmed when I took out the power supply and opened it up and saw that the fuse was blown. I then saw a blown capacitor in the power supply. I took a spare power supply and hooked it up to the computer and the computer started. The easiest thing to do is use another power supply and see if it works. If it don't, something else.
@BboyBao321 I am not sure why. Try installing it again if that doesn't work check with the Sony web site and see if someone else has this problem and mentioned a fix. Subscriber azassin225 installed Windows 7 on his Sony maybe he could help.
@bunnspecial well it seems that it will commonly work as a slave along with any other sort of IDE hard drive but when it comes to making it into the main boot device it seems that western digital IDE enhanced hard drives just don't get recognized by this model, i have been doing a lot of research but all i was able to find out is that not any kind of IDE hard drive will be recognize though i cant seem to find what kind of hard drive "DOES" work, :\
hi i have the same exact model and i want to change the hard drives but thing is that WESTERN DIGITAL just isnt compatble with this model... if it aint too much to ask what kind of hard drives did u install?
@proguy5920 I think the one in there now is an old Maxtor 120Gb. Last month I cloned that drive on to a 100Gb Western Digital as a back up but did not test it. I know I don't know everything about computers so could you tell me why Western Digital is not compatible with this computer? I know you have to be careful with RAM but I figure that if the hard drive has an IDE connector you are good to go.
Hi There, I have Sony VAIO PCV-RS430G desktop that works okay so far but of course a bit slow (okay very slow). If I just add another hard drive and add extra RAM will it work fine for regular internet browsing and spreadsheets etc? I would like to keep this for the kids for another couple of years (if possible) before they grow up and start asking for an i-mac. Will appreciate your advice. Thanks.
@UATABG Yes, I think so. I would install 2.0GB of RAM and remove all non essential programs from the startup. All those programs it loads on startup take up RAM whether you use them or not and if you don't have enough RAM the computer wil run slow. My Sony has a slower chip than yours but I use it on the internet and run programs with no problems. Hope this helps.
hey, i'm not sure if your vaio has this (mine is a pcv-1102) but mine has 2 4-pin 12v connectors on the mobo. now since i don't have the power supply to mine and since the non oem psu's i've tried in it didn't work. i'm wondering if maybe the factory psu has to connect to both of these 4-pin 12v sockets? not just the one by the cpu?
@hellokittyonastick My Sony has just one 4-pin 12v connector. I just put together another computer and in my search for a power supply I noticed that some psu's come with 2 4-pin 12v or just an 8-pin 12v. The motherboard I am using has an 8-pin 12v but four of the pins have a cap on them. They probably use this motherboard for several models one of which uses a 8-pin 12v. I am guessing you have to connect both 4-pin 12v. I would look for a picture of the psu and check out the cables.
@overcastgabriel From the Sony literature it says PC-2100 266MHz DDR. It also says expandable to 1GB. You could put in 24 gigs of ram but it will only recognize 1 gig so why spend the money? WTF, 24 gigs? The best thing the internet gave us is the abreviations for phrases. WTF is my favorite. I want it on my tombstone. I even heard it on TV. They used it on Two and a Half Men. It got by because I think the censors did not know what it meant. In reruns they changed it to WTH.
@BayAreaGamers From the Sony literature it says PC-2100 266MHz DDR. I am not sure what CL. I took this RAM from another computer. When I shut down I will open it up and write down the numbers. If you know exactly what you need you can get memory real cheap from Ebay.
@sonytvs I think that there is only two slots for memory and all I had was two 512mb sticks. Hard drives are inexpensive now. You could add another or replace what you have.
how many gigs is the hard drive i talked to sony and they told me you can only one in there i see two -_- please let me know asap hw many gigs it is THANK YOU SO MUCH
@sonytvs Since it did not come with a hard drive I put in one that is 120Gb. Yes, that is a second hard drive, 40Gb, in there. I use this second drive as a backup for files. This computer is capable of using two hard drives, one master and one slave. If you look at the hard drive cable in the video it is marked MASTER and SLAVE. There are jumpers on the hard drive for Mater or Slave. I don't remember what Sony originally had inside since I worked on this computer in the summer of 2009.
@sonytvs Glad to be of help. The only other thing I did was put in more RAM. I now have 1Gb of RAM. I am also going to replace that 40Gb hard drive with a 80Gb one. I don't game but I think you could install a graphics card. You can go to the Sony web site and download the manual and specs in PDF format. I don't have that stuff handy because they are on my other computer.
