  • @udayjee Agreed. Only those with an open mind will ever listen. Those who have already closed their minds will not listen. Only when they have opened them, and come in search of your wisdom, will they truly be able to hear it. It is not their fault, and we need not attribute negative feelings towards them. If anything, we should show pity and compassion. Until then, respect them as your equals regardless of what they say to you. Only our actions will show our the legitimacy of our thinking.

  • @lilmizpersuasive No its not supposed to sound scary, I dont know excactly how to explain it so it makes sense, but different frequency of sound creates different feelings in every human. When they chant they are in a deep meditative state and the frequency they use, say they are chanting om mane padre's, it causes a certian vibration which helps in meditation.

  • There are two parts to religion, some put emphasis on one, some on the other; The self and the relationship to a deity, or deities. Religions like Christianity (etc.- I've got nothing against any other religion, it's just the first that comes to mind, since I live in a predominately Christian country) want you to build a relationship with God/a God/Gods, by doing "good". Buddhism is about your relationship to yourself .

  • To me, Buddhism is more a moral code than a religion. Moreover, it appeals to one's intellect, not blind faith which allows no questioning or skepticism. If one removes karma and the belief in an afterlife, Buddhism becomes pure reason which one can examine, dissect, challenge, and obtain an answer without being spoon-fed. If I have any complaint about Buddhism at all, it is that it is too idealistic or too good to be true.

Jesus did his part, and can't be held responsible for a lot of people misinterpreting his words or acting in direct opposition to him; that's free will. Buddhists have been involved with fights as well. You don't hear about them as much cause the U.S. is mostly Christian and ignorant of other religions (their own including).

  • @DreadfulZack: A Buddhist would not be upset if you listened to the chants. They are for everyone. Sound is a powerful tool for meditation and self-healing. If you still have any qualms about listening to a Buddhist chant then try looking up solfeggio frequencies. Remember, everything has a frequency. You learn in grade school that even the atoms in a solid vibrate in place. Therefore even a pebble vibrates at a certain frequency. As do chakras, organs, and brainwaves. Matter is energy.

  • This is incredible. I'm taken by the way that, to me, this is a very earthy, grounded, ugly sort of sound and simultaneously ethereal, beautiful. That, in the sound itself, there is no duality.

Also it is usually referred to as a religion because many people misinterpret Buddhism. He never did state he was a god or a ''messenger of god'', but there are certain Buddhist Cultures that believe more different then the other ones.

  • @JohnJuanUnited I appreciate your sentiment... the Sutras do say follow the way not the man. Also many clergy have robbed people of their Truth by telling them they cannot be as good as someone else or attain their own enlightenment.

    HOWEVER: how you say something is as important as what you say. Your words can be like living Buddhas or like little demons/devils. What you say is bitter medicine, so people will run from it.

    Better to speak pleasantly, patiently, and always with the force of Law.

    I was once an atheist as well. I would rather taste bitter medicine than fail to take any at all; the arrogance of disbelievers is a cause only matched in strength by the negative karma they generate for themselves. Every little step or word - all in all failing to see the divine in everything - leads to selfishness in individual and society.

    You've actually gotten Buddhism mixed up with Christianity and Islam - religions which posit that one must place faith (blind belief) in something that may not actually be real. Buddhism is not like this. It is very atheistic in essence and actually teaches that a belief in God or gods is a form of clinging which leads to suffering.

    If I drop a ball, you have faith it will fall: you do not know for sure because the probability graph has the possibility that it will float. It is your faith in God's self-binding principles, especially Karma that enables you to use gravity.

    Proper faith is that which can be tested in one's own life.

    Belief in God does not require clinging... and even if it did suffering is enlightenment and desire is nirvana. Eliminating attachment is Hinayana. Seek Mahayana

    Another misconception you have of Buddhism. The question of creation or conscious conception of the universe by some supreme being is not a relevant one in Buddhism. In reality, it could care less. It is very unlike many of these abrahamic religions which garner followers through fear or threats of hell. Buddhism is a philosophy, not a religion. In fact, I myself am an atheist. My only problem with Buddhism is that it requires too much dedication, although its tenets are so very true.
