Seems like they taped this without an audience and then added a laugh track. (The soap opera-ish ambience makes that clear.) It's odd because I think the ABC years had a live studio audience, but I guess they got rid of the audience to save money when they went to syndication.
I loved this show! I watched as a youngin and didnt really get the jokes just loved the concept. Wish it were out there on DVD or VHS. Thanx for the clips keep
My mom used to watch this show when I was little. Too young to appreciate it then but I think that i wouuld love it now. I still remember the theme song though.
Ann Jillian did return to the show after her double mastectomy but eventually did leave the show. I think they brought in Crystal Bernard to replace her. The other waitresses were Gail Edwards (featured prominently in this clip), Barrie Youngfellow and Sheryl Lee Ralph.
Actually, Sheryl Lee Ralph replaced Ann Jillian; Crystal Bernard was part of the original SYNDICATED run, so Crystal and Ann were both on the show for about 2 seasons. Susan Sullivan and Wendy Schaal were part of the pilot season on ABC and they were replaced by Louise Lasser when it was retitled MAKING A LIVING. This was a great show that deserves a DVD release. Paul Junger Witt, Tony Thomas and Susan Harris write the best sitcoms.
I learned that ANN JILLIAN quit the show to star in more films which was her first love in show business. She went on to star in over 25 films, most for TV. It's A Living then brought in a "new character" as nobody could "replace" Ann Jillian's "Cassie Cranston" as she was one of a kind and for me the true star of this series. Did you know that Ann Jillan went from last billed star to first billed star in the TV series? It's true - I checked out the credits of all my old episodes that I taped.
Yes, I do recall Ann going from last billed (ABC) to first billed (Syndication). The show was at its best when it was syndicated. On ABC they went through two different chefs (Mario and Dennis) before settling with Howard in the syndicated version. Nancy was always sucking up to whoever the chef was! By the way, I have a personally autographed photo of Gail Edwards (Dot)!
yes, you're right, i do recall the "chef" casting changes and i liked the Nancy character a lot - i did think the writing was best on the original first year of It's A Living - Cassie had those great one liners "when I sleep alone, I like to get it over with" etc. I have three photo's autographed by Ann Jillian
I'd have to watch the first season again, it's been so long. I remember Ann Jillian on BATTLE OF THE NETWORK STARS in the baseball dunk tank (she took the plunge!). I remember the episode where Nancy's visiting friend Louise was dating Sonny, she revealed to the waitresses that she used to be a he and that Sonny doesn't know about it.....and they all crack up laughing hysterically!
I liked having 5 waitresses instead of 4. I remember watching some of Season 1 when they first aired in 1980-"81. I was a young boy then and I liked Ann Jillian and mostly Gail Edwards.
Crystal Bernard and Ann Jillian were on the show together one season only; Ann left after the first syndicated season. Susan Harris had nothing to do with this show; it was produced by Witt and Thomas only. And there is no such thing as a "pilot season". There is a pilot episode, followed by a first season.
I liked this show though I had little idea what was going on. Wasn't there one about like 4 stewardesses called "Up and Away" or "Above the Clouds" or some such?

If you want this show on DVD, email service@wbshop.com.
I doubt it will ever get an official retail release, but Warner Brothers are slowly converting shows to their Manufacture-on-Demand DVD program.

This reminds me of those old slasher movies for some reason. Why is that? Only with bad jokes and a fake laugh track.

I loved how someone (especially the stuffy Nancy Beebe) would always slam the cover on the piano player's hands...that was hilarious! :)
