@erinmatt We who sing this music have different religious beliefs, but there's one belief we all share - we believe in singing these songs together, often and with enthusiasm.
I went to this same singing last year, that's where I fell in love with the singing. When I first heard recordings of it before I didn't really like it, thought it sounded too weird. I think it's best to hear it live before making a judgement on it.
@TCIndiana Sacred Harp singing isn't for everyone, but then, what kind of music IS? Sacred Harp is not sung for audiences, but for those participating, who love to sing this kind of harmony together.
I'm a non-theist. However, you'd have to be deaf and completely emotionless to not find this music anything less than incredibly inspirational. The atmosphere and buzz must be amazing to actually be there live in person and take in the energy.
I'd like to participate in a sing sometime but can't find one in my area (and I'd have to have a large dose of prior training, to be sure). I guess I'll just have to keep working up my own solo versions for the time being.
I love this one too!! No im not apart of any group...i say sacred hart...and all i get is a weird look! No one around this town knows about it! But thank you so much for sharing again!
Actually it's Sacred Harp or also called fasola or Shape-Note singing.
This is one of my favorite tunes also but I have many. I am fortunate to belong to a Sacred Harp group in Dayton, Ohio but we don't meet in the summer. Can't wait for September to roll around unless I want to travel to another city or state.
I meant harp...sry typo! :P I sang with a Group called Northen Harmony once and that is where i learned of the Balkan Genre... You should record your group! If you havent already!
I did record a short clip of them singing "Nearer My God to Thee" but was not able to get the whole song. I am hoping to have a real video camera someday soon so I can get some real footage and not just small clips.
This is so powerful. I'm not a believer but this stirs my soul. Well, let me correct that: I am a believer when I hear this music!

You have a typo in the beginning of your video: You wrote 547, but it's 457.

You should say 'Sacred Harp' (not 'hart'). You'll still get a weird look & they won't know what it is. But that's the word.
Glad you enjoy the songs, and you're most welcome!
