so how do pilots know if they're gonna fly which plane? Do they get to choose or does it really depend on the training or are all jumbo jets basically the same?
@dookiekong007 Pilots are 'rated' on a particular aircraft. These pilots are obviously rated on the MD80 but maybe also the 737, so they could fly either. However, they won't go near an Airbus or 777 until they have a rating on that type. As for routes, it's a bidding system and the most experienced pilots get the more exciting routes. Start at the bottom, in other words!
@dookiekong007 Pilots are 'rated' on a particular aircraft type. These chaps are obviously rated on the MD80 but maybe (and most likely) the 737 as well (and perhaps smaller types like the ATR-72, considering it's KLM). They couldn't fly a 777 or Airbus because they aren't rated. Routes are on a bid system, with the more experienced pilots (or higher company positions) getting the more exotic routes. Jets are basically the same in terms of going up and down, but that's all!
i never understood why people recording in cockpits never use tripods ... ok the cockpit is small, BUT if there is room for a cameraman to stand, there has to be room for a skinny tripod, this is a decent vid, BUT it's way to shaky to even be able to tell if that's wind or the cameraman's hand!
@DerPilotMann yah, but bro, cmon what about a tripod, i just hate when i can't tell the difference bt the plane and turb and the cameraman's shaky hands
@applejuice1324 I dont know if you have been in an MD-80, there is absolutely no room for a tripod lol. On a slightly larger aircraft I can understand, but an MD-80 has no spare room lol
@applejuice1324 I understand, it would certainly be nice to see this awesome bird with a little more stability. But MD didnt really think about that when they designed the DC-9 series lol.
@fighter742 depends...usually i retard Throttles at about 10 feet and sometimes even lower..But first I start to pull the wheel and then I retard..not the opposite..This is on the 737 NG Winglets
@CaptainBergs Yes, that's true, but he couldn't divert if something happened at the airport regarding visibility or a plane disabling the runway. It's commonplace not to allow less than 5000# of fuel on landing in that particular plane. They had half that!
@jbraunger That gauge is reading in kilograms, not pounds. You can tell because of the gross weight reading below the total fuel weight, which is somewhere in the 475XX kilogram range. This aircraft weighs over 80,000 pounds when empty, so it would be impossible to have a 475XX pound gross weight. Based on this fact, the aircraft has around 5500 pounds of fuel on board.
@fighter742 To give you an idea, both Airbus 320's and 340's announce for the pilots to retard (Idle) the throttles right at the 20ft altitude call out. I know that is about the height, but I know it's not written in stone. It's a matter of judgment based on the winds, landing weight of the aircraft, how much of a flare the pilot wants to execute, etc. If you're flying things in the 737, 757 A320, MD80 size, I'd pull back the throttles at around that height or a little less.
By the way, Dusseldorf is the next airport from my hometown :) And thank you very much mmmpetersen for uploading this great MD-80 HD movie!
Good old LTU airways at 09:00 It's now Air Berlin which is the second biggest German airline (about 150 airplanes) and so the biggest competitor of Lufthansa (well, more than 700 airplanes).
@fighter742 I think it is 131 knots (242 km/h) which is quite usual for the MD-80. Just look at the third number from left on the glare shield instrument panel (where the digital flight guidance system or auto pilot is located) at around 06:50 It's the speed select window which shows the selected speed for the auto throttle system. It reads 131 which should be the final approach speed at this time.
@MaroonBugUK While I agree that the cockpit design of the MD-80 series is nice, but that it is fuel efficient is not the case. It is quite fuel inefficient which was the reason why they stopped the production. For example, the bigger Boeing 737-800 uses way less fuel than the MD-80 (about 20% less!). Alitalia, Spanair, SAS etc... they all replace most of their MD-80s by modern aircraft like 737 NG and A320.
@AirSimming I that case, why is the DC-9/MD-80 series always classed as best airliner? TBO, I prefer the 757, but is usually 6/7th below the md-80 and 737!
@MaroonBugUK Well, which up to date source mentions the DC-9/MD-80 series as "best airliner", and most importantly, how is "best airliner" defined?
We're talking about aircraft models which are 30 to 45 years of technological age, and which are out of production already for 28 (DC-9) and 11 (MD-80) years due to economic inefficiency and therefore missing orders from airlines.
@MaroonBugUK The replacement for the DC-9 was the Boeing 717 of which only 115 have been build due to missing orders. When it comes to efficiency, nothing beats the A320 series, the modern 737 series and the new Brazilian Embraer Jets (as said, the 737-800 for example consumes about 20% less fuel than the even smaller MD-80). The MD-80 is going to become out of service hugely. Alitalia was one of the main operators (about 100 MD-82's), and they are replacing all MD-82's by A320's.
Very nice videos. I flew jumpseat flight (just asked by e-mail) from Brussels to Copenhagen and back to Brussels on board the SAS MD80. Flight was great, and especially the captain, Mr. Wiklund, on the first flight was great. I like the aircraft to fly with, very silent cockpit.

@andrescaraudio You will likley find that that was 3000kgs of fuel - which is 6600 or so pounds. European airlines tend to use Kilograms/tonnes for fuel measurement rather than Pounds/Tons.
