Thank you so much for making my day.. I too remember this.. from watching the show... what a lovely voice... she sings into her voice.. Fabulous tone.. and interpretation.. I love Bubbles
Sills was taught to sing this by Estelle Liebling her mentor;Lit's a beautiful and sad Spanish song about a woman who is dying and making a wish to a star. Sills sang this aria in many recitals as a tribute to her mentor.
I am in heaven after listening to this. THANKS for posting this. It is as if this was written for the "line" of her voice. Her technique of holding these notes in the upper register is without peer. The emotions she imparts with Estrelitta are JUST as they should be. THis is a gift that Sills perfected! BRAVA DIVA! We miss you!!!
That's legendary Tonight Show guitarist Bob Bain playing with her. Before the show, she was evidently very tired from traveling and not sure she would even perform, had done no rehearsal , and all Bob knew was that IF she sang it would be Estrellita in the key of F. A little pressure?
I don't remember having heard this performance of the song by Sills. It is indeed beautifully sung and will go on my list of favorite performances along with those of Galli-Curci, Pons, and Scotney.
Thanks for finding and posting this!! I've waited 34 years to hear this performance from the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson once again. I remember it like yesterday, even the slight break in her voice at 1:06. I was so excited when the Plaisir d'Amour album was released and had a 1961 recording of Sills singing Estrellita with Andre Kostelanetz conducting. If you don't own this CD, go out and find one, it is one of my favorites.
Even more than her exquisite singing, what always strikes me is Sills' simple and moving commitment, which goes straight to the heart of the listener without no affectation, no easy dramatic tricks. She simply communicates emotion through her voice and her face, what is a very difficult thing to do without sounding or looking artificial.
deanna durbin...the best singer on this version...thanks
